Abstract

Background: Postpartum blues is a common mood disorder affecting postpartum mothers, with potential impacts on maternal mental health and infant development. Early identification using valid and reliable instruments is essential for appropriate management. Objective: This study aimed to examine the validity and reliability of the Postpartum Blues Scale and identify the prevalence and risk factors of postpartum blues among postpartum mothers in the working area of the Health Center in Batam. Methods: A pilot study with a cross-sectional design was conducted on 30 postpartum mothers from January to March 2024. Data were collected using the Postpartum Blues Scale, comprising 32 items across six dimensions, scored on a 0-3 scale. The instrument was evaluated for validity and reliability, and associations between variables were analyzed using appropriate statistical tests. Results: The Postpartum Blues Scale demonstrated good psychometric properties (Cronbach's alpha = 0.89). The overall prevalence of postpartum blues was 70%, with mild (40%), moderate (20%), and severe (10%) symptoms. Significant risk factors included lower educational level (p = 0.032), primiparity (p = 0.041), a cesarean delivery (p = 0.045), and inadequate social support (r = 0.68, p = 0.001). The most prevalent symptoms were excessive fatigue (83.3%), anxiety about the baby's health (80%), and mood swings (76.7%). Conclusion: The Postpartum Blues Scale is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing postpartum blues. The high prevalence and identified risk factors highlight the need for routine screening and targeted interventions in primary healthcare settings.

Abstract

Background: Pregnancy is one of the things expected by women in the process of life. However, many women experience difficulties due to physical, social, and psychological changes during pregnancy, there are even some mothers who suffer from psychological disorders such as depression. Perinatal depression occurs in 10-15% of women. One of the causes is a lack of knowledge about the process of pregnancy until the postpartum period which results in birth complications and disrupts the baby's growth and development. Purpose: This study aimed to identify the characteristic factors of respondents associated with prenatal depression. Methods: This research is a quantitative research that uses a cross-sectional design. The sample in this study was 85 respondents of pregnant women using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) screening tool. Results: The results of this study showed that the factors associated with the incidence of depression in pregnant women were education (p = 0.011), income (P = 0.046), history of domestic violence (p = 0.028), and pregnancy complications (p = 0.043) while the unrelated factors were age (P = 0.098), occupation (P = 0.829) and parity (p = 0.139) with α = 0.05. Conclusion: Education, income, history of domestic violence and history of pregnancy complications affect the incidence of depression in pregnant women. Recommendations: It is expected that the team of health workers, especially midwives and nurses, will not only focus on physical health but mental health also needs attention, and is expected to provide screening services and pregnancy psychology services to identify patients at risk of depression. Abstract

Introduction: Marital satisfaction, which includes aspects of communication, emotional intimacy, partner support, and quality of interaction, is believed to play an important role in maternal mental health after childbirth. This dissatisfaction can increase feelings of loneliness, stress, and anxiety, all of which can worsen the mental state of the postpartum mother. Women who experience dissatisfaction in their marital relationships have a higher tendency to experience postpartum depression. The prevalence of depressive disorders in the world population is 3-8% with 50% of cases occurring at the productive age of 20-50 years. World Health Organization. (WHO) states that depressive disorder affects 20% of women and 12% of men at some point in life. Objective: To find out if there is a relationship between marital satisfaction and the incidence of postpartum depression in East Bekasi. Methods: This study is an analytical study, meaning a study that aims to see the relationship or influence in the form of analytical descriptive research with a crossectional approach using the chisquere test, Research results: the results of the Chi-Square Statistical Test obtained a p-Value of 0.043 (p-value <0.05) so that Ha was accepted by Ho and rejected which means that there is a meaningful relationship between marital satisfaction and depression in postpartum mothers. Bottom Line: Women who are dissatisfied with their marriage are more at risk of postpartum depression. These findings are in line with many previous studies that show that the quality of a marital relationship can affect a mother's mental well-being after childbirth. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the aspect of marital satisfaction as part of efforts to prevent postpartum depression.

Abstract

This literature review explores interventions for postpartum blues, a condition that affects up to 80% of new mothers. A systematic analysis was conducted on research published between 2010 and 2024, sourced from PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO databases. Of the 1,247 initial articles, 72 met the inclusion criteria following a comprehensive screening process. The findings indicate that psychosocial interventions, particularly peer support and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), provide the most substantial evidence for effectiveness. Additionally, emerging approaches, including hormonal treatments, nutritional supplementation, and technology-based support, show promising potential. The review also highlights the need for standardized outcome measures, longer-term studies, and culturally adapted interventions. The results advocate for implementing personalized, multimodal approaches and integrating these interventions into routine perinatal care. This review makes a significant contribution to evidence-based practices aimed at supporting maternal mental health during the critical postpartum period.

Abstract

Background: Anxiety is a common psychological impact experienced by disaster survivors, including flood survivors. They often develop excessive fear of rain, thunder sounds, and the potential for recurring floods, which may lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). One of the evidence-based psychological therapies effective in addressing anxiety is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which works by altering negative thought patterns and maladaptive behaviors. Objective: This study aims to analyze the effect of CBT on anxiety levels among flood disaster survivors in two disaster-prone areas. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group design. The sample consisted of 60 flood survivors divided into two groups: the intervention group (n=30) and the control group (n=30). Anxiety levels were measured using the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test to assess the effectiveness of CBT in reducing anxiety. Results: The analysis showed a significant difference in anxiety levels before and after the intervention in the experimental group (t(14) = 5.21, p < 0.001), while no significant change was found in the control group (t(14) = 1.32, p = 0.201). The average anxiety score in the intervention group decreased from 36.7 to 15.6, indicating that CBT was effective in reducing anxiety among flood disaster survivors. Conclusion: CBT has been proven effective in reducing anxiety levels among flood survivors by helping them change negative thought patterns and improve coping mechanisms. Implementing CBT can serve as a psychological intervention strategy in post-disaster recovery programs to enhance the mental well-being of survivors.
