Abstract

Palm sugar (Arenga pinnata) is widely used in traditional and industrial food processing, where its solubility plays a crucial role in determining product consistency and efficiency. However, most previous studies have focused on the solubility of refined cane sugar, leaving limited understanding of how temperature and stirring conditions affect the dissolution behavior of palm sugar, which has a more complex composition. This study aims to examine the effect of temperature, solute mass, and stirring duration on the solubility of palm sugar in water. A laboratory-based experimental method was employed, varying temperature (50°C, 75°C, 100°C), sugar mass (20 g and 40 g), and stirring duration (1 and 2 minutes). In general, the findings indicate that higher temperature accelerates the dissolution rate, while greater solute mass extends dissolution time. These results confirm temperature as the dominant factor influencing dissolution kinetics. The implications of this study include improving household practices for faster sugar preparation, optimizing processing efficiency in small-scale food industries, and contributing to food science education by providing an applied example of solubility principles.

Abstract

Research on student responses and the challenges of implementing virtual laboratories in qualitative cation analysis practicums within vocational pharmacy education remains limited. This study aims to explore student responses to the use of virtual laboratories as an alternative learning tool and to identify the challenges faced during its implementation. A qualitative approach with a case study method was employed. Data were collected through questionnaires and classroom observations during the learning process. The participants were 41 Grade XII students of the Pharmacy Program at SMK Galang Insan Mandiri Binjai, who engaged in virtual laboratory-based learning for qualitative cation analysis. The results indicate that virtual laboratories enhance student engagement and comprehension of the subject matter. Students responded positively to the use of virtual labs, reporting increased motivation and interest in developing technology-related skills. However, challenges such as limited digital literacy and infrastructure issues were also identified. The study suggests that virtual laboratories should be complemented with hands-on practicum sessions to provide a balanced and realistic learning experience. These findings offer valuable insights into the potential and limitations of virtual laboratory implementation in vocational pharmacy education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the perspectives of students from the Department of Mathematics enrolled in a General Chemistry class regarding the use of young coconut water as a natural remedy to treat fever symptoms. The research is grounded in the widespread trust of Indonesian society in herbal medicine, particularly young coconut water, which has been traditionally used across generations to treat various health conditions, including fever. Young coconut water is known to contain vital nutrients such as electrolytes (potassium, sodium, magnesium), B-complex vitamins, and vitamin C, which help lower body temperature naturally, especially during dehydration caused by fever. A quantitative approach with a descriptive survey method was employed. The data were collected using a closed questionnaire based on a Likert scale, which was tested for validity and reliability, achieving a Cronbach's Alpha value of 0.977-indicating a high level of reliability. Results showed that students' average scores in knowledge (3.90), understanding (3.81), attitude (3.89), and application (3.87) were all in the high category. This indicates that students not only understand the benefits of young coconut water but also grasp scientific concepts related to electrolyte function in fluid balance and immune response. Despite the high scores, some misconceptions persist. For example, a few students believe young coconut water can entirely replace medical treatment or that higher consumption leads to faster healing without regard for appropriate dosage. This highlights the need for improved science-based health literacy. The study concludes that continuous health education through lectures, seminars, and healthy campus campaigns integrating both traditional and medical approaches is essential. These findings are significant in promoting the wise and measurable use of natural remedies like young coconut water while avoiding misuse. Furthermore, the results can serve as a basis for future research, such as clinical trials or laboratory comparisons with other rehydration fluids, and can help develop health promotion policies in academic settings to encourage smart and healthy decision-making among students.

Abstract

Bioplastik merupakan salah satu alternatif potensial untuk menggantikan plastik konvensional, karena sifatnya yang mudah terdegradasi sehingga lebih ramah lingkungan. Bioplastik dapat disintesis dari pati dan gliserol dengan penambahan asam organik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis perbedaan pengaruh penambahan asam asetat dan asam sitrat terhadap laju degradasi bioplastik yang berpotensi digunakan sebagai bahan kemasan ramah lingkungan. Bioplastik dibuat menggunakan dua formulasi, yaitu: (1) pati, gliserol, dan asam asetat (cuka), serta (2) pati, gliserol, dan asam sitrat (jeruk nipis), dengan rasio komposisi 18:1,5:1,5 mL. Produk bioplastik yang dihasilkan kemudian diuji sifat biodegradabilitasnya melalui pengamatan selama tiga belas hari. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kedua jenis bioplastik belum mengalami degradasi sempurna hingga hari ketiga belas. Namun, pertumbuhan jamur lebih banyak teramati pada bioplastik berbasis asam sitrat. Hal ini diduga berkaitan dengan tekstur bioplastik asam sitrat yang lebih lembap dibandingkan dengan bioplastik yang menggunakan asam asetat. Temuan ini mengindikasikan bahwa jenis asam yang digunakan dalam pembuatan bioplastik dapat mempengaruhi tingkat kelembapan dan pertumbuhan mikroorganisme selama proses degradasi.

Abstract

SMK Swasta YPP Prof. Dr. H. Mohd. Hatta merupakan sekolah kejuruan yang baru berdiri kurang dari tiga tahun di Kabupaten Langkat, Provinsi Sumatera Utara, sehingga masih menghadapi permasalahan dalam optimalisasi proses pembelajarannya. Mitra mengalami kendala dalam menerapkan pembelajaran berbasis Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), terutama terkait pemanfaatan IPTEKS sebagai pendukung pengembangan kemampuan berpikir tingkat tinggi siswa. Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PKM) ini bertujuan meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan guru serta stakeholder sekolah dalam menerapkan pembelajaran HOTS melalui pemanfaatan IPTEKS secara efektif. Mitra kegiatan adalah guru dan stakeholders SMK YPP Prof. Dr. H. Mohd. Hatta yang berjumlah 20 orang. Metode pelaksanaan meliputi sosialisasi konsep HOTS, edukasi penggunaan IPTEKS dalam pembelajaran, demonstrasi media pembelajaran digital, dan pendampingan praktik penerapan. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan pemahaman peserta terhadap strategi dan media pembelajaran berbasis IPTEKS, ditandai dengan antusiasme tinggi dan kemampuan peserta dalam menyusun rancangan pembelajaran HOTS sederhana. Tim juga melakukan evaluasi untuk memastikan keberlanjutan penerapan pembelajaran berbasis HOTS di sekolah. Kesimpulannya, kegiatan PKM ini efektif dalam memperkuat kemampuan guru dalam memanfaatkan IPTEKS untuk mendukung implementasi pembelajaran HOTS, serta berkontribusi pada peningkatan kualitas proses pembelajaran di SMK YPP Prof. Dr. H. Mohd. Hatta.

Abstract

This study analyzes the role of various instructional methods in enhancing student engagement and academic achievement in chemistry learning. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach using a literature review design that examined findings from peer-reviewed journal articles, classroom action research, and educational reports. The synthesis of the reviewed studies indicates that student-centered instructional methods, particularly Project-Based Learning (PBL) and collaborative learning, consistently lead to higher levels of participation, conceptual comprehension, and overall learning outcomes. Meanwhile, teacher-centered lecture methods tend to result in lower engagement and weaker retention. The review also shows that combining multiple instructional strategies allows teachers to respond more effectively to differences in learners’ needs, characteristics, and learning objectives. The research concludes that blended instructional approaches that integrate project-based, collaborative, and reflective learning activities create more interactive and meaningful chemistry learning environments, while also supporting the development of essential twenty-first-century competencies.

Abstract

Pembelajaran abad ke-21 menuntut peserta didik memiliki kemampuan literasi sains yang memadai, khususnya dalam memahami materi kimia yang kompleks dan abstrak. Namun, hasil asesmen internasional menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan literasi sains siswa, termasuk di Indonesia, masih belum optimal. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis penerapan model Pembelajaran Berbasis Masalah (Problem Based Learning/PBL) dalam meningkatkan literasi sains pada pembelajaran kimia di tingkat Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA/MA). Metode yang digunakan adalah Systematic Literature Review (SLR) dengan menganalisis artikel yang diterbitkan antara tahun 2018 hingga 2024. Berdasarkan hasil analisis diperoleh 13 artikel yang memenuhi kriteria inklusi untuk dianalisis. Hasil tinjauan menunjukkan bahwa penerapan PBL secara konsisten memperkuat pemahaman konsep sains secara mendalam dan meningkatkan keterampilan berpikir kritis serta pemecahan masalah siswa. Model pembelajaran ini tidak hanya mendukung prestasi akademik, tetapi juga membantu siswa mengaitkan ilmu yang dipelajari dengan situasi nyata, sehingga meningkatkan kualitas literasi sains yang dibutuhkan dalam pembelajaran kimia saat ini.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan e-modul pembelajaran kimia berbasis Problem-Based Learning (PBL) yang terintegrasi dengan pendekatan deep learning pada materi termokimia serta mengetahui tingkat kelayakan, kepraktisan, dan efektivitasnya. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian pengembangan (Research and Development) dengan model 4D (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate). Subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas XI SMA Negeri 17 Medan tahun ajaran 2025/2026. Instrumen yang digunakan meliputi lembar validasi ahli, angket respon siswa, serta tes hasil belajar (pretest dan posttest). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa e-modul yang dikembangkan dinyatakan layak berdasarkan penilaian ahli materi dan ahli media. Tingkat kepraktisan e-modul tergolong baik berdasarkan respon siswa terhadap kemudahan penggunaan, tampilan, dan manfaat pembelajaran. Selain itu, e-modul terbukti efektif dalam meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa dengan nilai N-gain sebesar 0,71 yang termasuk dalam kategori tinggi. Dengan demikian, e-modul berbasis PBL dan pendekatan deep learning dapat digunakan sebagai bahan ajar yang inovatif untuk meningkatkan pemahaman konsep, keterlibatan, serta kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa pada materi termokimia. Development of an E-Module Based on Problem-Based Learning and a Deep Learning Approach in Thermochemistry This study aims to develop a chemistry e-module based on Problem Based Learning (PBL) integrated with a deep learning approach on thermochemistry material and to determine its validity, practicality, and effectiveness. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate). The subjects were eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 17 Medan in the 2025/2026 academic year. The instruments used included expert validation sheets, student response questionnaires, and learning outcome tests (pretest and posttest). The results showed that the developed e-module was valid based on expert evaluations. The practicality level was categorized as good based on student responses regarding ease of use, design, and learning benefits. Furthermore, the e-module was proven effective in improving students’ learning outcomes with an N-gain score of 0.71, categorized as high. Therefore, the PBL-based e-module integrated with a deep learning approach can be used as an innovative teaching material to enhance conceptual understanding, student engagement, and critical thinking skills in thermochemistry learning.
