Abstract

Background : The Curcuma genus has various pharmacological activities, one of these is antithrombotic activity by preventing thrombus formation. Some of its chemical contents are also known to inhibit thrombus formation including curcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin, ar-turmerone, and xanthorrizhol compounds. Antithrombotic drugs are used for the prevention and treatment of thrombosis whose mechanisms are divided into anticoagulants, thrombolytics, and antiplatelets. Objective: This review article discusses the potential of Curcuma genus as antithrombotic, including anticoagulant, antiplatelet, and thrombolytic, Methods: This study was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method using four databases : PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Google Scholar from July to December 2023. The inclusion criteria used were articles on antithrombotic activity, including anticoagulants, antiplatelets, and thrombolytics from the genus Curcuma. Results: The number of articles obtained from four databases was 3413 articles. Furthermore, based on the results of filtering duplicate articles from all databases, 2771 articles were selected and then continued with screening based on inclusion and exclusion criteria until 15 articles were selected as material for systematic review. Conclusion: Curcuma species that have potential as antithrombotic are Curcuma longa, Curcuma zedoaria Rosc., Curcuma amada, Curcuma caesia, Curcuma aeruginosa, Curcuma latifolia, Curcuma aromatica Salisb, Curcuma wenyujin, and Curcuma xanthorrhiza

Abstract

Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) is one of the most commonly used chromatographic techniques to identify compounds in mixtures and determine the purity of a compound. However, the crucial factor that is difficult to control, which can affect the accuracy of the results, is the stage of sample application. This study focused on investigating the effect of different techniques of sample application (manual and semi-automatic) on the area and retention factor (Rf) of the compound spot. Curcuminoid was used as a sample in this study. The manual sample application techniques used a 2μL capillary tube. The semi-automatic sample application techniques used a Camag Linomat-5 instrument with 0, 7, and 8 mm band lengths. After the development of the TLC plate using toluene: acetic acid (4:1, v/v)., the curcuminoid was separated into three spots: curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin. A one-way ANOVA was used to analyze the spot area and Rf of the three compounds, followed by a Duncan test. The difference in sample application techniques causes differences in the size and shape of the initial sample spot, which affects the compound spot produced after developing of TLC plate. This study showed that the differences in application techniques cause significant differences in the Rf of the compound spot, but do not show significant differences in the compound spot area. Based on this research, optimizing the application techniques of samples is a critical stage and it is essential to optimize how to apply the sample on TLC plate, including the concentration, volume, shape, and size of the spot on TLC.

Abstract

Plants are the main source of secondary metabolites that have important biological potential. This study aims to screen the phytochemicals of green tea leaves and black pepper to identify the classes of active compounds contained within them. Extraction was performed using the maceration method with 96% ethanol over three days, followed by qualitative phytochemical testing (alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, triterpenoids, steroids, polyphenols, and anthraquinones). Green tea leaves contain alkaloids, triterpenoids, flavonoids, polyphenols, and anthraquinones. Black pepper contains alkaloids, saponins, triterpenoids, steroids, and flavonoids, but does not contain polyphenols, tannins, or anthraquinones. The differences in the composition of active compounds indicate distinct therapeutic potentials in the two plants and support their use as natural medicinal ingredients.

Abstract

: This community service aims to increase the capacity of community skills in utilizing local biological resources, especially secang wood (Caesalpinia sappan L.), as an active ingredient in making natural-based handsoap with bioactive compounds such as brazilin, tannins, and flavonoids that have antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, as environmentally friendly hygiene products. The training will be carried out through a theoretical and practical approach, which includes the introduction of the chemical characteristics of sappang wood, active ingredient extraction techniques, natural soap formulation, production process, and equipped with basic materials for product packaging and marketing strategies, especially in the context of micro business development and promotion through digital media. From the results of the community service program about education on Handsoap Making Training Using Secang Wood, it can increase the insight and knowledge of the residents of RT Wage Sidoarjo and can improve the community's economy.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of extraction time variations on the yield and total curcuminoids of 96% ethanol extract of temu giring (Curcuma heyneana) using the Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE) method. Extraction was performed at 20, 60, 120, and 150 seconds using an 800-watt microwave with a 1:10 (w/v) solvent ratio. Yield was calculated based on total solids, while total curcuminoids were quantified using UV-Vis spectrophotometry at 469 nm. The results showed an increase in yield from 2.40% (20 s) to 7.52% (150 s) and total curcuminoids from 2.3962 µg/mL to 5.9593 µg/mL. Statistical analysis indicated a significant difference between treatments (****p < 0, 0001). Based on the tested time range 150-second exteaction time was identified as optimum, maximizing cell rupture and solvent diffusion without compromising thermal stability of curcuminoids. Thus, extraction time plays a key role in optimizing green extraction of temu giring.
