Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the role of broiler feed standards using the Analytic Network Processing (ANP) method. Data were taken from five feed manufacturing companies, three feed experts and three government institutions in the feed sector. There were 3 criteria and 6 sub-criteria in determining the best alternatif out of 6 feed evaluation in the context of implementing broiler feed quality and safety standards. The results showed that the greatest sub-criteria weight was effectiveness (0.750). In addition, the selected alternatif analysis with the highest weight was proximate analysis (0.315; 0.280) in the assessment by feed companies and the government and followed by amino acids analysis (0.365) in the assessment by feed experts. From the results, all entities assessed the proximate analysis as a priority because proximate testing on animal feed could help to determine the nutritional quality of feed by knowing the content of protein, fat, crude fiber, and other nutrients in the feed. This study was concluded that proximate testing was very important in the animal feed industry because it could help in determining the nutritional quality of animal feed, optimizing livestock growth and production, preventing nutritional deficiencies in livestock, determining the selling price of feed, and guaranteeing feed quality. Key words: ANP, feed quality and safety testing, feed standards, quality control and feed safety

Abstract

The development of the livestock sector in Indonesia, particularly for sheep farming, still faces many challenges. Farmers continue to use traditional methods, resulting in slow growth of livestock and suboptimal profits. Mineral blocks are supplemental feed designed to enhance the adequacy of energy, protein, and minerals, as well as to improve the palatability of ruminant animals in block or cylindrical forms. Milk replacer is a substitute milk for livestock, expected to help provide nutrients for pre-weaned lambs. The outreach program on lamb care and mineral block production aims to increase the knowledge, awareness, and interest of farmers in Pekasiran Village regarding the nutritional needs of livestock through the provision of milk replacer and mineral blocks. The methods used in the implementation of the program include direct observation of farms, interviews, mapping, distributing invitations to farmers in Pekasiran Village, conducting trials of mineral blocks, outreach by providing materials on lamb care and mineral block production, demonstrations, and interviews with farmers present at the outreach event. This activity was attended by 38 breeders with a total of around 720 livestock. The outreach activities were carried out in collaboration between KKN-T students from IPB University and CV. Al Mumayyaz Group. During the program, it was found that the farmers were very enthusiastic about participating, actively discussing with the resource persons, and they were able to demonstrate the production of mineral blocks correctly and effectively. This activity also contributed to improving the health and productivity of livestock, as well as the well-being of farmers in Pekasiran Village. Farmers are expected to be able to implement better and more innovative practices in livestock management so that they can contribute to increasing efforts to develop livestock potential in Pekasiran Village.

Abstract

Selenium is a mineral element that acts as an antioxidant and affects enzyme formation, the immune system, and reproduction in livestock. Selenium yeast is an organic form of Se. The high availability of inedible mackerel can be utilized as a raw material for peptone in the growth medium of yeasts that produce organic Se. The objective of this study was to determine the characteristics of pepton derived from inedible mackerel as a growth medium for W. anomalus. Pepton was analyzed for amino acid composition using HPLC, solubility of pepton in water (gravimetric method), pepton yield, pH, proximate analysis, free α-amino nitrogen content, total nitrogen, AN/TN ratio, and salt content (Volhard method). Mackerel fish pepton has the following characteristics: protein content 75.5%, free α-amino nitrogen 1.9%, solubility 99.9%, total nitrogen 12.1%, salt content 7.9%, AN/TN ratio 16.2%, and pH 7.0. Mackerel fish pepton unfit for consumption applied to the growth medium of Wickerhamomyces anomalus as Se-Yeast has a higher growth rate compared to commercial pepton.

Abstract

Prill fat is a by-product of cooking oil production that can be utilized as a fat source in animal feed. The prill fat’s fine granular form and difficulty in achieving homogeneity with other materials pose challenges in its utilization. Processing prill fat into supplement wafers can be an alternative for its use, with careful consideration of its melting point. This study aims to optimize the production process of supplement wafers containing prill fat using response surface methodology (RSM) and to evaluate the changes in quality during storage. The research stages include optimizing the production process with temperature and heating time as factors, and the responses tested are production efficiency, moisture content (MC), and wafer durability index (WDI). The optimal temperature and heating time identified were 50°C for 1 minute, yielding a production efficiency of 95.2%, a moisture content of 5.6%, and a WDI of 95%, with the validation results showing a confidence level of 95%. It can be concluded that a temperature of 50°C with a heating time of 1 minute can be applied to produce supplement wafers containing prill fat. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of prolific lambs fed milk replacer derived from mackerel peptone with prolific lambs fed mother’s milk. This study used six twin born lambs aged 1 week with an average birth weight of ± 2.05 kg and male. The treatments applied in this study were mother’s milk (P0) and milk replacer containing 100% mackerel peptone (P1). The observed variables included ash content, crude protein content, crude fat content, calcium content, phosphorus content, total nitrogen, total volatile base (TVB) content, milk amino acid profile, milk consumption, body weight gain, feed conversion rate, and mortality. The results showed that milk replacer containing 100% mackerel peptone had high crude protein content and complete amino acid composition. Prolific lambs fed with milk replacers showed no significant difference in body weight gain compared to those suckling from their mothers. Additionally, lambs receiving the milk replacer did not exhibit any signs of digestive disorders, loss of appetite, abnormal behavior, or mortality during the maintenance period. Utilization of mackerel peptone as an alternative protein source can be used up to 100% in milk replacer. It can be concluded that feeding milk replacers formulated with mackerel peptone resulted in a 1.30% increase in lamb body weight, with no significant difference observed in performance compared to lambs suckling form their mothers. Key words: lamb, milk replacer, peptone, prolific, protein
