Abstract

Land cover changes in the Pangandaran Coastal area are significantly influenced by tourism attractions as well as geographic and socio-economic dynamics. As one of the main coastal tourism destinations in West Java, Pangandaran receives more than 3.5 million tourists annually, which puts significant pressure on the coastal environment. This study uses land cover data from 2017–2023 analyzed using a regression and GIS approach, this study identifies spatial and temporal patterns of urban expansion and their implications for environmental sustainability. The results show that urbanization in Pangandaran is concentrated in the coastal lowlands, especially in Pangandaran and Sidamulih Districts, increasing vulnerability to natural disasters such as tsunamis. This expansion is triggered by the need for tourism infrastructure that often sacrifices natural ecosystems such as mangroves and coastal forests. In Cimerak and Parigi Districts, changes are more influenced by industrial and agro-industrial development, while growth in Cijulang is hampered by karst topography which is less supportive of urban development. Meanwhile, Kalipucang remains relatively natural due to geographic limitations that limit urban expansion. This study emphasizes the importance of sustainable coastal management, including adaptive spatial planning, conservation of critical ecosystems, and community-based initiatives to mitigate risks posed by unplanned urban expansion. The results of this study provide important insights for policymakers to balance tourism-based development with environmental resilience in the coastal area of Pangandaran.

Abstract

Terumbu karang, ekosistem laut yang sangat produktif namun rentan, menghadapi ancaman parah dari perubahan iklim, terutama pemutihan karang akibat peningkatan suhu laut dan pengasaman. Konservasi konvensional tidak lagi memadai, sehingga diperlukan pendekatan inovatif seperti evolusi terbantu (assisted evolution) untuk mempercepat adaptasi karang. Literatur review ini membahas dua strategi inti evolusi terbantu: pemuliaan selektif (selective breeding) dan manipulasi holobion (meliputi manipulasi simbion dan mikrobioma). Pemuliaan selektif melibatkan persilangan karang toleran stres untuk menghasilkan keturunan yang tangguh, sementara manipulasi holobion berfokus pada rekayasa komunitas alga simbion (Symbiodiniaceae) dan mikrobioma bakteri untuk meningkatkan ketahanan. Meskipun masih dalam tahap pengembangan, studi awal menunjukkan hasil yang menjanjikan dalam meningkatkan kelangsungan hidup karang. Dalam konteks Indonesia, yang kaya akan keanekaragaman hayati laut, terdapat potensi besar untuk penerapan evolusi terbantu. Inisiatif seperti lokakarya toleransi termal dan program restorasi skala besar menunjukkan kesiapan, meskipun sebagian besar upaya restorasi masih konvensional. Untuk memajukan pendekatan ini, diperlukan studi percontohan lokal, pengumpulan data genetik yang komprehensif, keterlibatan masyarakat, dan kerangka regulasi yang mendukung. Dengan demikian, Indonesia dapat menjadi pemimpin regional dalam penelitian dan aplikasi evolusi terbantu untuk memastikan masa depan terumbu karang yang lebih tangguh.

Abstract

Coastal areas play a crucial role in sustaining marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of local communities. However, pressures from abrasion, vegetation degradation, and human activities threaten the sustainability of ecosystems. This Community Service and Empowerment program aimed to encourage direct community involvement in coastal conservation through the planting of Pandanus tectorius in Batu Hiu, Pangandaran. The methods applied were participatory approaches, including community coordination, environmental education, planting activities, and initial monitoring. The results showed the successful planting of hundreds of Pandanus tectorius seedlings in coastal areas vulnerable to abrasion, the release of 129 turtle hatchlings over three years of activities, and an increase in community knowledge about the ecological functions of Pandanus tectorius. Discussions with the community revealed the growth of collective awareness and concern for coastal conservation. This program demonstrates that marine ecotourism with a community-based conservation approach can serve as an effective strategy to protect coastal habitats while instilling environmental sustainability values.[Kawasan pesisir memiliki peran penting dalam menjaga keberlanjutan ekosistem laut dan kehidupan masyarakat. Namun, tekanan akibat abrasi, degradasi vegetasi, serta aktivitas manusia mengancam keberlanjutan ekosistem. Kegiatan Pengabdian dan Pemberdayaan Masyarakat (PPM) ini bertujuan mendorong keterlibatan langsung masyarakat dalam konservasi pesisir melalui penanaman pandan laut (Pandanus tectorius) di kawasan Batu Hiu, Pangandaran. Metode yang digunakan adalah pendekatan ABCD (Asset-Based Community Development) partisipatif berupa koordinasi dengan masyarakat, edukasi lingkungan, aksi penanaman, dan monitoring awal. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan keberhasilan penanaman ratusan bibit pandan laut di area pesisir rawan abrasi, pelepasan 129 ekor tukik, serta peningkatan pengetahuan masyarakat tentang fungsi ekologis pandan laut. Diskusi dengan masyarakat menunjukkan tumbuhnya kesadaran dan kepedulian kolektif terhadap konservasi pesisir. Kegiatan ini membuktikan bahwa ekowisata laut dengan pendekatan konservasi berbasis komunitas dapat menjadi strategi efektif untuk melindungi habitat pesisir sekaligus menanamkan nilai keberlanjutan lingkungan.]

Abstract

This study was conducted at Teluk Penyu Beach, Cilacap Regency, with the aim of analyzing the composition, density, and primary sources of marine debris in the area. Sampling was carried out from October to November 2024 using a 5×5 m quadrat transect method along the shoreline, with a 20 m distance between transects. The results showed that a total of 2,021 debris pieces were collected, with the main composition consisting of wood debris (1,485 pieces; 62.80%), plastic (469 pieces; 19%), other materials (294 pieces; 14.58%), plastic foam (42 pieces; 2.60%), fabric (10 pieces; 1.12%), and rubber (7 pieces; 0.17%). The highest debris density was found in the wood category, with 12 pieces/m², followed by plastic (3.752 pieces/m²), plastic foam (0.336 pieces/m²), other materials (0.16 pieces/m²), fabric (0.133 pieces/m²), and rubber (0.14 pieces/m²). Based on the Clean-Coast Index (CCI) calculation, the beach cleanliness index score of 8 indicates that Teluk Penyu Beach falls into the "moderate" category. These findings suggest that the primary source of debris in the area originates from wood waste transported from Segara Anakan through the Nusakambangan Strait, as well as tourism and fishing activities. Sustainable coastal environmental management efforts are necessary to mitigate pollution impacts, including increasing public awareness and implementing ecosystem-based waste management strategies. Keywords: anthropogenic pollutants, Clean-Coast Index, coastal debris, lagoon, wood ABSTRAK Penelitian ini dilakukan di Pantai Teluk Penyu, Kabupaten Cilacap dengan tujuan untuk menganalisis komposisi, kepadatan, dan sumber utama sampah laut di kawasan tersebut. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan pada bulan Oktober–November 2024 menggunakan metode transek kuadrat 5x5 m di sepanjang garis pantai dengan jarak 20 m antar transek. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa total sampah yang terkumpul sebanyak 2.021 potongan dengan komposisi utama berupa sampah kayu (1.485 potongan; 62,80%), plastik (469 potongan; 19%), bahan lain (294 potongan; 14,58%), busa plastik (42 potongan; 2,60%), kain (10 potongan; 1,12%), dan karet (7 potongan; 0,17%). Kepadatan sampah tertinggi ditemukan pada kategori kayu dengan 12 potongan/m², diikuti plastik (3,752 potongan/m²), busa plastik (0,336 potongan/m²), bahan lain (0,16 potongan/m²), kain (0,133 potongan/m²), dan karet (0,14 potongan/m²). Berdasarkan perhitungan Clean-Coast Index (CCI), nilai indeks kebersihan pantai sebesar 8 menunjukkan bahwa Pantai Teluk Penyu masuk dalam kategori “sedang.” Temuan ini mengindikasikan bahwa sumber utama sampah di kawasan ini berasal dari limbah kayu yang terbawa dari Segara Anakan melalui Selat Nusakambangan, serta aktivitas wisata dan perikanan. Upaya pengelolaan lingkungan pesisir yang berkelanjutan diperlukan untuk mengurangi dampak pencemaran, termasuk melalui peningkatan kesadaran masyarakat dan pengelolaan limbah berbasis ekosistem.
