Abstract

The Indonesia Coral Reef Garden (ICRG) is a coral reef restoration program with Nusa Dua as one of five sites in Bali. A plantation program has been done by 2020, but it is necessary to monitor the condition. A field survey in Nusa Dua was carried out on October 3-4, 2022 to measure and check ocean parameters that are suitable for coral life and diving in artificial coral reefs installed. In the survey, several points had been measured through CTD Valeport Midas+ prior to measuring ocean parameters in the same location as a preliminary survey done two years in advance. The sea condition of temperature, salinity, pH, turbidity, and DO is 24.89 - 28.69 °C, 33.75 - 34.22 psu, 8.0 - 8.1, 1.19 - 4.27 FTU, and 4.47 - 5.24 mg/L, respectively. Based on the conformity of water quality, the water condition is good for coral growth. A total of 15 locations are used to put artificial coral reefs in many forms or structures. The coral plantation program in Nusa Dua shows promising progress in qualitatively consisting of species of Montipora sp., Acropora sp., and Alcyonacea sp. A continuous measurement is demanded to monitor the condition of coral growth quantitatively.

Abstract

Land cover changes in the Pangandaran Coastal area are significantly influenced by tourism attractions as well as geographic and socio-economic dynamics. As one of the main coastal tourism destinations in West Java, Pangandaran receives more than 3.5 million tourists annually, which puts significant pressure on the coastal environment. This study uses land cover data from 2017–2023 analyzed using a regression and GIS approach, this study identifies spatial and temporal patterns of urban expansion and their implications for environmental sustainability. The results show that urbanization in Pangandaran is concentrated in the coastal lowlands, especially in Pangandaran and Sidamulih Districts, increasing vulnerability to natural disasters such as tsunamis. This expansion is triggered by the need for tourism infrastructure that often sacrifices natural ecosystems such as mangroves and coastal forests. In Cimerak and Parigi Districts, changes are more influenced by industrial and agro-industrial development, while growth in Cijulang is hampered by karst topography which is less supportive of urban development. Meanwhile, Kalipucang remains relatively natural due to geographic limitations that limit urban expansion. This study emphasizes the importance of sustainable coastal management, including adaptive spatial planning, conservation of critical ecosystems, and community-based initiatives to mitigate risks posed by unplanned urban expansion. The results of this study provide important insights for policymakers to balance tourism-based development with environmental resilience in the coastal area of Pangandaran.

Abstract

Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of benthic habitat distribution and public infrastructure on Tunda Island, aimed at developing effective tourism zoning strategies. By integrating high-resolution spatial data derived from field surveys and remote sensing technologies, including multispectral imagery and Geographic Information System (GIS) methodologies, the research delineates distinct zones optimal for diverse tourism activities. The findings indicate that the southern and southeastern parts of the island, characterized by sandy substrates and proximity to resorts and docks, are well-suited for intensive tourism. Conversely, the northern and northwestern regions, dominated by coral and rocky substrates, are proposed for conservation-oriented educational tourism due to their rich biodiversity. The research also highlights the potential of community-based tourism facilitated by existing public infrastructure such as schools and mosques, which supports local engagement in tourism development. The resultant zoning map serves as a vital tool for local authorities and stakeholders in Tunda Island, guiding sustainable tourism management practices that value ecological integrity and community involvement. This study underscores the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in ecological monitoring and tourism planning, contributing to the broader discourse on sustainable practices in small island contexts

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between urban expansion and land cover changes in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), with a focus on the impacts of transportation infrastructure and tourist attractions. Over recent decades, rapid urbanization driven by economic growth, improved transportation networks, and expanding tourism has significantly transformed land use patterns across the province. The development of the Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) and the improvement of road networks have been key drivers of urban sprawl, particularly in Sleman and Bantul. These areas have experienced the conversion of agricultural land into residential and commercial zones. The expansion of tourist destinations, such as Gunung Merapi and Prambanan, has further accelerated land use changes, intensifying urban growth and putting pressure on local ecosystems. This study utilizes satellite imagery and spatial regression models to examine land cover changes and their drivers, revealing that infrastructure development and the tourism sector play pivotal roles in shaping the region's landscape. The findings underscore the need for sustainable spatial planning policies to mitigate the environmental impacts of urban sprawl and ensure the long-term resilience of DIY's natural resources and cultural heritage.
