Abstract

Abstract

Layar Tanjleb, the flagship program of the Purbalingga Film Festival (FFP) since 2007, offers an alternative form of entertainment resembling traditional open-air cinema. Initiated by Bowo Leksono, a former Jakarta journalist and founder of the Cinema Lovers Community (CLC), the program aims to promote film culture in Purbalingga. Its first film, “Orang Buta dan Penuntunnya” (2004), sparked mobile film screenings for high school students starting in 2005. Layar Tanjleb organizes free open-air screenings, showcasing fiction and documentary films by young directors, including works in the local Javanese Ngapak dialect. This study explores the evolution of Layar Tanjleb as a digital-era form of entertainment and its impacts on the creative economy as well as socio-cultural aspects. Using historical methods (heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, historiography) combined with interviews, observations, and literature review, the research demonstrates how Tanjleb strengthens local identity. The findings reveal that, to date, Tanjleb has screened 858 films and reached more than 135,000 viewers. The program has proven effective in reinforcing community bonds, promoting cultural pride, and stimulating growth. Layar Tanjleb is not merely entertainment, but also a medium of cultural education, local identity promotion, and a driving force of the creative economy ecosystem in Purbalingga.

Abstract

This research examines the role of jeans as a symbol of social resistance in student demonstrations in Jakarta in 1970-1998. Initially seen as an icon of modernity and globalization, jeans over time became an identity for students and activists who opposed the repressive policies of the New Order. During the 1974 Malari Demonstrations, students wore jeans as a form of criticism against economic dependence on foreign capital, and signaled their solidarity with workers affected by ongoing economic injustice. During the 1998 Reformation, jeans reappeared as a symbol of resistance against the Soeharto government, which was considered authoritarian and corrupt. This research uses a historical research method with a social history approach. The research process includes collecting data sources (heuristics), analyzing data validity (source criticism), interpreting the symbolic meaning of jeans, and compiling historical narratives (historiography). By referring to Sartono Kartodirdjo's concept of social history, the results of this study show that material culture, such as jeans, is not only part of the lifestyle, but also a form of political expression tool in the student movement. The existence of this research can confirm that clothing can also play a role in shaping collective identity and voicing aspirations for social change in society.

Abstract

During the colonial era, Semarang earned the nickname Venetie van Java as a reflection of the city’s character, which was supported by a network of rivers, canals, and rapidly expanding maritime activities, making it an important center of trade and administration on the northern coast of Java. In this context, Kota Lama served as the core of colonial urban development, shaping Semarang’s spatial structure, economic activities, and historical identity. This study aims to analyze the development of Kota Lama between 1824 and 2024 and to examine the dynamics of its transformation into a cultural heritage-based tourism area using historical methods that include heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The research findings indicate that the demolition of the fort in 1824 marked a turning point in the area’s functional shift from a defensive zone to an open city integrated with the colonial economic system and urban development. Entering the 20th century, the Kota Lama experienced a decline due to shifts in the economic center and the orientation of development policies. However, since the early 21st century, revitalization through a conservation approach based on heritage tourism has successfully revived the area as a cultural heritage space with historical, educational, and economic value, thereby reflecting the sustainable transformation from a colonial fortified city into a cultural tourism destination that is adaptive to the times.

Abstract

Traditional cuisine is an important part of cultural heritage that reflects the social, economic, and identity dynamics of a community. This study examines the history and development of Lentog Tanjung as a traditional culinary specialty of Kudus from 1952 to 2014, as well as its transformation from a common people’s food sold using shoulder poles (pikulan) into a culinary center. This research employs a qualitative approach using the historical method through the stages of heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. Data were obtained from literature studies, documentation, and interviews with business actors, local communities, village officials, and the Department of Culture and Tourism (Disbudpar) of Kudus Regency. The results show that Lentog Tanjung functions not only as a culinary dish commonly consumed for breakfast by people in Kudus and outside the region, but also as a representation of cultural identity that has developed alongside social and economic changes. The shift in the selling system from mobile shoulder-pole vendors to permanent stalls in a culinary center has strengthened its position as a regional culinary icon while also encouraging local economic growth. This transformation has also influenced changes in gender roles, marked by the increasing participation of women in the production and sale of Lentog Tanjung. The sustainability of this culinary tradition is supported by the consistency of its authentic taste and presentation, as well as support from the community and local government in organizing the area and preserving traditional cuisine.

Abstract

This community service program aims to conduct storytelling training on the folklore "Nasi Menangis" as a means to enhance appreciation for oral traditions, reduce food waste, and foster the habit of mindful eating among students of SD Negeri 01 Ngijo, Semarang. The Nasi Menangis folklore conveys moral messages about respecting food and the importance of minimizing food waste. Through a series of training activities, parents of the students are encouraged to understand and appreciate the rich local culture embedded in the folklore. Additionally, they gain insights into the significance of mitigating food waste to support environmental sustainability. This program also introduces the concept of mindful eating practicing full awareness while eating to help students develop healthier and more sustainable eating habits. The implementation of the program involves collaboration between the school, educators, parents, and students. An evaluation process measures the program’s impact on the parents’ efforts to improve students' understanding of oral traditions, food waste mitigation, and mindful eating habits. It is hoped that this program will not only provide educational benefits to the students but also encourage the preservation of local culture, reduce food waste, and shape a generation more conscious of the importance of environmental sustainability and health through wise eating practices.
