The Experimental group was the group that was given the treatment by using Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) while the control group was given the Conventional teaching and learning method. The effectiveness of the treatment was determined by comparing the post-test scores of both groups. The data regarding students' speaking achievement was collected by speaking tests, questionnaires, and interviews were used to collect the data regarding with the student's interest. The result of this study showed that there was a significant difference between the students’ scores taught by using SpeakingPal and the conventional method. It was proven by the mean score of the experimental group After the treatment applied the difference scores of the posttest between experimental and control group were huge. It means that there was an impressive improvement after treatment applied for experimental group. The mean score of the students‟ pretest of experimental group was 10.20 with standard deviation 1.53; meanwhile the mean score of the students‟ pretest of control group was 8.20 with standard deviation 1.66. And the mean score of the students‟ posttest of experimental group was 14.12 with standard deviation 2.33; while the mean score of students‟ posttest of control group was 10.36 with standard deviation 1.73. It means that the mean score of posttests from both groups were higher than pretest (10.20<14.12) and (8.20<10.36). The test result indicated that the implementation of SpeakingPal had a significant effect in improving students' speaking achievement. From the questionnaire and interview the data showed that 64% of students were categorized as highly interested and 32% of students were categorized as interested level. Abstract

Given that researchers aim to publish in prestigious journals, understanding the rhetorical organization of such publications is crucial. While this topic has been extensively studied, existing research has yet to explore how authors in reputable journals engage with prior literature. To fill this gap, the present study intends to analyze how research article authors respond to other earlier literature in their research article introductions (RAIs) published in reputable international applied linguistics journals. This study aims to achieve two objectives: to find out to what extent responding to other earlier literature is important in RAIs, and to discover what types of response authors employ in their RAIs. To achieve these goals, this study employed combined descriptive qualitative and quantitative approaches for analyzing 40 RAIs published in Q1 journals as data sets in the present study. Then, a new analytical framework was designed to respond to the above objectives. The results indicated that responding to other earlier literature is obligatory in RAIs published in reputable international applied linguistics journals. In responding to other earlier literature, authors employed three types of response: either extending other earlier studies, modifying other earlier studies, or establishing a new method, idea, or knowledge. This study offers theoretical contributions by expanding the understanding of how research article authors engage with prior literature within their RAIs. Its practical implications include guiding researchers on effectively utilizing prior literature to establish their research agenda when publishing in reputable journals.

Abstract

Abstract

Metaphor is one of the essential elements of language that reflects a person’s level of creativity and capacity for abstract thinking. This study aims to identify the relationship between students’ personalities—based on the Big Five Personality model—and their ability to construct metaphors in English, using the theoretical framework of Lakoff & Johnson (1980). Employing a quantitative correlational approach, the research involved 65 active students from the English Literature Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar, selected through stratified random sampling. The instruments used were the Indonesian-adapted version of the Big Five Personality questionnaire (IPIP) and a metaphor writing test consisting of 20 items. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the dimension Openness to Experience had a strong and significant positive relationship with metaphor construction ability, establishing it as the strongest predictor. Conscientiousness also showed a significant positive correlation, while Neuroticism had a significant negative correlation. In contrast, Extraversion and Agreeableness were not significantly associated with metaphor ability. These findings highlight that certain personality aspects—particularly openness to experience and self-discipline—play an important role in supporting students’ linguistic creativity, especially in metaphorical expression.

Abstract

This research determines the student's learning strategies based on their learning styles. This research applied qualitative study. The subject of this research is the students of English literature class A in Universitas Negeri Makassar, who were selected through a purposive sampling technique. Thirty-five students were chosen as the subjects of this study. The data were obtained through questionnaires and interviews and then analyzed based on producers of data analysis identification, classification, and descriptive analysis. The result showed that i) there are some learning styles that students have, such as visual, auditory, and kinesthetic (VAK) learning styles; ii) students' learning strategies based on their learning style where subjects engaged in several learning activities or methodologies. Two types of learning techniques were primarily considered: individual and group strategies. The individual strategies were marked by all of the activities the subjects had done, and the group strategies described the learning actions employed by the subjects to comprehend the knowledge or the lesson by engaging friends who could help them.
