Abstract

Abstract

Background: Adequate biomechanical preparations, antibacterial irrigants, and intracanal medications to promote the elimination of bacteria and their products are required to succeed root canal treatment. Enterococcus faecalis with its biofilm is known as an important etiological agent in endodontic treatment failures. Chitosan, as a natural product, has an antibacterial activity and is considered less toxic to the periapical tissue than other irrigants. However, the use of this natural product needs to be examined to determine its effectiveness as a root canal irrigant in endodontic treatment; this can be done by comparing it with the most common endodontic irrigant (NaOCl 5.25%) as a positive control. Objective: The objective of the study was to compare the effectiveness between 1–3% chitosan acetate (CA) and 1–3% chitosan citrate (CC) against E. faecalis biofilm formation after treatment for 15, 30, and 60 minutes. Methods: The study was conducted using 12 groups, including 1–3% CA, 1–3% CC, and control groups. E. faecalis biofilms in 96-well plates were exposed to each sample for 15, 30, or 60 minutes. Subsequently, the biofilms were stained with crystal violet solution, and the optical density value was measured using a microtiter plate reader at a wavelength of 600 nm. Results: CA and CC were effective in eradicating E. faecalis biofilm. However, the levels of effectiveness of CC and CA depended on the concentration and application time. Three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed a significant difference between the irrigants (p <0.05) and three application times (p <0.05). The CA was effective in eradicating biofilm after 15 minutes of application, whereas the CC was more effective after 30 and 60 minutes of application. Conclusion: CC and CA are both effective in eradicating E. faecalis biofilm.

Abstract

Introduction: Tooth discoloration is one of the problems and the reason why people begin to notice the appearance of their teeth. Phenolic compounds are often found in foods and beverages, one of them is red beetroot juice that cause discoloration on the tooth surface. The acidity of red beetroot juice is a factor of color changes on the tooth surface extrinsicly. Objectives: This study aims to determine the effect of red beetroot juice on color changes of tooth surface. Methods: This experimental laboratory research conducted pretest and posttest. Twenty maxillary premolar samples within inclusion criteria were stored in the artificial saliva at 37oC and treated for 30 minutes using 50 mL red beetroot juice, followed by immersion in artificial saliva overnight. Treatment was repeated 7 times for 7 days consecutively. The teeth was tested by using Vita Easyshade V before and after treatment and then the acquired data was statistical tested using paired T-test. Result: T-test showed variable E, C and H with p=0.000 (p<0.05) showed a significant changes in total color deviation, chroma and hue, while the variable of L with p=0.015 (p>0.05) meant no significant change of value. Conclusion: It can be concluded that red beetroot juice (Beta vulgaris, sp) can affect color changes on the tooth surface.

Abstract

Background: Endodontic treatment of young permanent (immature) necrosis  teeth is often challenging because the condition of thin and short roots increases the risk of fracture during  treatment. Review: The optimum healing condition for teeth with open apex necrotic pulp is to regrow functional pulp tissue and continued root development. A novel concept of revascularization of immature nonvital, infected teeth was recently introduced. Conclusions: This paper summarizes the literature supporting biological reasons for considering revascularization procedures for immature permanent teeth with pulp necrosis and the future potential of regenerating the pulp tissue as a routine dental procedure

Abstract

Maintaining dental and oral health is one of the good habits that must be taught as early as possible, especially in junior high school children. This is because junior high school children are more aware and understand the importance of maintaining health than elementary schoolchildren. As we all know, there is currently a Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic, staying at home is considered not to be applied forever. A number of countries have begun to relax policies related to the mobility of their citizens, however, the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid19 continues to threaten. So, a new lifestyle or new normal will be implemented. The target of the training on maintaining oral health this time is the teachers and students of SMP Tri Ratna. Provide education to students and teachers about the importance of maintaining oral health in the new normal era. The counseling was carried out using a webinar (web seminar), held on February 22, 2022, followed by 132 participants from Tri Ratna Middle School. Participants' knowledge was assessed by pre-test and post-test using Google Form. From the results of the pre-test and post-test obtained, it can be seen that there is an increase in the knowledge of the extension participants by 17.22% (the mean pretest value is 42.78+14.23 and the average posttest value is 60.19+16.87) with an increase in the percentage of correct answers from the prepost test ranging from from 2.63%-36.63%

Abstract

Background: Pilots are a very stressful job. As a consequence of stress, pilots practice bruxism. Common clinical manifestations due to bruxism are attrition and abfraction. To evaluate whether there is a relationship between pilot flight hours and job stress associated with the occurrence of bruxism, attrition and abfraction among domestic civil aviation pilots throughout Indonesia. Methods: The subjects of the study were 196 pilots who were undergoing routine annual dental examinations at the Aviation Health Center of the Directorate General of Transportation. The pilot's flying hours, pilot job stress, awareness of the occurrence of bruxism was evaluated using the questionnaires. Attrition and abfraction were calculated based on scoring. Results: Most of the research subjects had flight hours of 5,000 to 10,000 hours, namely 44.4% (n = 87). Pilots who experienced stress were represented with at least 56.1% depression (n = 110) and minimal anxiety 49% (n = 96). Bruxism was found in 16.8% (n = 33) of all subjects. The highest attrition measurement was in enamel 47.4% (n = 93) and the most abfraction occurred in posterior teeth 8.2% (n = 16). The results of the Spearman correlation test show that there is no significant relationship between pilot flying hours with stress, bruxism with stress and stress on attrition. Conclusion: The higher the pilot's flight hours, the lower the stress. The higher the pilot's stress, the lower the attrition. There is no relationship between bruxism and pilot stress. The attrition that occurs is not directly related to bruxism activity.
