Abstract

The horticulture sector plays an important role in supporting food security. The availability of quality horticultural seeds is key to increasing the productivity of horticultural crops. Horticultural seed production involves various practices and techniques that can impact the environment, as well as issues such as genetic resource management, fairness in seed distribution, and community welfare. Bioethical principles must be considered to ensure horticultural seed production is done responsibly and sustainably. This research is a descriptive qualitative study that aims to describe and analyze the application of bioethical principles in horticultural seed production at the Horticultural Seed Development Unit Medan. Data were collected through literature studies, observations, and interviews with practitioners involved in horticultural seed production to gather information on the application of bioethical principles. The bioethical principles applied at the Horticultural Seed Development Unit Medan are kindness, harmlessness, and justice. The application of this principle is through conventional techniques of plant breeding, and the use of organic fertilizers. However, there are still weaknesses such as the use of chemical pesticides. Despite the challenges, efforts are made through guidelines, seed distribution programs, and collaboration with agricultural extension workers. The application of bioethical principles can support environmental sustainability and maintain food security. Recommendations include increasing awareness of the importance of bioethics, improving regulations, and developing bioethics training for researchers, technicians, and practitioners involved in horticultural seed production.

Abstract

Oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) are one of the main solid biomass residues in the palm oil industry, accounting for approximately 20–25% of the total processed raw materials. Management of this waste is a strategic issue in supporting industrial sustainability, particularly from an environmental, social, and economic perspective. This study aims to analyze the bioethical dilemma in the utilization of OPEFB through a descriptive qualitative approach using field observation and literature review methods. The analysis was conducted by grouping findings based on environmental, social, and economic perspectives, and interpreted using bioethical principles such as responsibility, justice, and sustainability. The results indicate that OPEFB has significant potential as a value-added resource, such as organic fertilizer, bioenergy, biomaterials, and lignocellulose-based industrial products. This utilization provides benefits in waste reduction, community empowerment, and increased economic value. However, the bioethical dilemma arises from the imbalance between the industry's economic interests and environmental protection and community welfare. Therefore, sustainable OPEFB management is needed through the integration of environmental, social, and economic aspects based on bioethical principles to achieve ethical and sustainable industrial development.

Abstract

Noise generated by human activity is a form of environmental disturbance that has the potential to affect wildlife behavior, including birds that rely heavily on acoustic communication for their daily activities. This study aims to analyze the influence of human noise on bird activity and behavior in the coastal area of ??Sejarah Beach, Batubara Regency, North Sumatra. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive methods through direct field observations from January 28 to February 2, 2026. Data were collected through observations of bird activity and human activity around the observation area, such as visitor conversations, footsteps, and other tourist activities that produce sound. The results of the observations indicate that birds engage in various activities, such as foraging, resting, and grooming, when the environment is relatively quiet. However, increased human activity that produces noise causes birds to increase their vigilance and move to quieter areas. This suggests that anthropogenic noise can affect bird behavior patterns and habitat utilization in coastal areas. Therefore, the application of environmental management principles and wildlife observation ethics is necessary to minimize disturbances to natural bird activities and support conservation efforts in coastal areas.

Abstract

The development of biotechnology through plant tissue culture techniques provides significant benefits in producing superior, disease-free seedlings quickly. However, the use of modified Murashige and Skoog (MS) media also produces laboratory waste that has the potential to pollute the environment if not managed properly. This study aims to examine the management of tissue culture media waste, identify potential risks, and analyze the application of bioethical principles in its management. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through observation and documentation in the Tissue Culture Laboratory. The results show that contaminated culture media waste is still disposed of directly without undergoing a sterilization process and waste separation according to standards. This condition has the potential to cause negative impacts such as the spread of microorganisms, environmental pollution due to chemical content, and the risk of health problems. From a bioethical perspective, this practice does not fully implement the principles of non-maleficence, beneficence, and responsibility. Therefore, the implementation of waste management in accordance with bioethical principles through sterilization, waste separation, and sustainable management is needed to support safe and responsible laboratory practices.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the cleanliness and design of laying hen cages and their relationship to disease prevention and livestock welfare from an ethical and bioethical perspective. The method used was a descriptive study with direct observation and interviews conducted at a laying hen farm in Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra. Observed aspects included cage height, distance between chickens and manure, manure removal system, ventilation, and general cleanliness of the cage. The results showed that the cage conditions generally met good standards, with a cage height of approximately 2.5 meters, natural ventilation supporting air circulation, and cage cleanliness maintained through routine cleaning every three days. Adequate distance between chickens and manure and a low fly presence also indicated a relatively low risk of disease transmission. Furthermore, regular use of disinfectants helped control pathogenic microorganisms. From an ethical and bioethical perspective, the husbandry practices implemented reflect the farmer's moral responsibility to maintain animal welfare by providing a clean, healthy, and appropriate environment. However, this study is still limited to a single location and is descriptive in nature, so further research with a broader scope and a quantitative approach is needed.

Abstract

The widespread misuse of sodium tetraborate among informal food producers highlights the urgent need for eco-friendly, independent food screening methods. This study aimed to validate the effectiveness of turmeric rhizome (Curcuma longa L.) as an initial screening instrument for borax in high-moisture food clusters. An experimental method was applied through direct visual contact testing of reactive curcumin extract against seven types of wet domestic food samples. Colorimetric test results showed that deep orange boron cyano curcumin (rosocyanine) complex formation was detected exclusively and positively in yellow noodle samples. Six other products chicken meatballs, fish balls, pempek, white tofu, vermicelli, and crackers were confirmed negative. It is concluded that the alkaline-induced structural degradation triggered by this local natural indicator demonstrates precise reactive sensitivity, is economically viable, and is applicable as a communal preventive solution for enhancing household food safety literacy.

Abstract

The misuse of borax as a preservative in school snacks poses a serious threat to food safety, necessitating practical and accessible solutions for the general public. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of purple cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata f. rubra) extract as a natural indicator for the qualitative detection of borax. Laboratory experiments were conducted at the Biology Laboratory of Universitas Negeri Medan using the maceration method with water as the solvent to extract anthocyanin pigments. Food samples tested included meatballs, tofu, yellow noodles, and crackers. The results showed that purple cabbage extract successfully detected borax in yellow noodle samples through a colour change from purple to bluish-green, caused by the deprotonation of anthocyanins under alkaline conditions. These findings demonstrate that purple cabbage extract is a valid, economical, practical, and environmentally friendly screening tool to support public food safety monitoring.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi aktivitas antibakteri ekstrak etanol daun kenanga (Cananga odorata) terhadap bakteri isolat tanah. Penelitian dilakukan secara eksperimental laboratorium (in vitro) dengan menggunakan metode difusi cakram pada media Mueller-Hinton Agar (MHA). Daun kenanga diekstraksi menggunakan etanol 96% melalui metode maserasi dan remaserasi hingga diperoleh ekstrak kental, kemudian diuji pada konsentrasi 100% dan diamati secara kualitatif berdasarkan terbentuknya zona hambat setelah inkubasi selama 24 jam pada suhu 37°C. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak etanol daun kenanga memiliki aktivitas antibakteri dengan zona hambat sebesar 8,5 mm dan 8,16 mm yang tergolong kategori sedang. Aktivitas antibakteri ini disebabkan oleh kandungan metabolit sekunder seperti flavonoid, tanin, saponin, alkaloid, dan minyak atsiri. Meskipun daya hambatnya lebih rendah dibandingkan antibiotik kloramfenikol (22–24 mm), hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa daun kenanga berpotensi sebagai sumber antibakteri alami yang efektif dan ramah lingkungan.

Abstract

Tanaman andaliman (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC.) merupakan rempah asli Sumatera Utara yang kaya akan senyawa aktif seperti flavonoid, alkaloid, tanin, dan saponin, yang berfungsi sebagai antibakteri alami. Studi ini dilakukan untuk mengevaluasi potensi ekstrak andaliman dalam pembuatan obat kumur berbasis herbal. Ekstraksi bahan dilakukan menggunakan metode maserasi dengan pelarut etanol 70%, kemudian diuji aktivitas antibakterinya terhadap mikroorganisme penyebab bau mulut seperti Streptococcus mutans dan Staphylococcus aureus. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak andaliman mampu menghambat pertumbuhan bakteri secara efektif dengan terbentuknya zona hambat yang jelas. Formulasi obat kumur dari ekstrak andaliman juga menunjukkan keamanan penggunaan serta memberikan efek penyegaran alami di rongga mulut. Oleh karena itu, andaliman dapat dijadikan sebagai alternatif bahan alami yang potensial untuk dikembangkan menjadi obat kumur herbal yang efektif dan ramah lingkungan.

Abstract

Keamanan pangan merupakan isu krusial yang berkaitan langsung dengan kesehatan masyarakat, namun penyalahgunaan bahan tambahan pangan berbahaya seperti boraks masih marak ditemukan pada produk pangan olahan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji kemampuan ekstrak bunga telang (Clitoria ternatea L.) sebagai indikator alami untuk mendeteksi kandungan boraks secara kualitatif pada berbagai sampel makanan. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah eksperimen laboratorium dengan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif terhadap tujuh sampel makanan, yaitu bakso ayam, bakso ikan, pempek, tahu putih, bihun, mie kuning, dan kerupuk ikan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak bunga telang yang mengandung pigmen antosianin sensitif terhadap perubahan pH, di mana kondisi basa akibat keberadaan boraks akan memicu perubahan warna dari biru keunguan menjadi hijau. Dari seluruh sampel yang diuji, hanya sampel mie kuning yang menunjukkan perubahan warna menjadi hijau, yang mengindikasikan adanya kandungan boraks. Sementara itu, enam sampel lainnya menunjukkan hasil negatif. Simpulan dari penelitian ini adalah ekstrak bunga telang efektif digunakan sebagai instrumen skrining awal yang sederhana, aman, dan ekonomis untuk mengidentifikasi kontaminasi boraks pada makanan, serta berpotensi dikembangkan sebagai media edukasi keamanan pangan bagi masyarakat.
