Abstract

Traditional settlements are part of the urban context of every country, especially tourism-oriented cities such as Yogyakarta (Indonesia) and Kyoto (Japan). The design strategy and regulations have a more significant and complex portion involving cultural heritage buildings and settlement networks that shape the city's morphology. Pontocho and Kotagede are cultural areas with unique characteristics, such as the existence of narrow allies called Roji (in Japanese) and 'Jalan rukunan'. This research aims to understand the role of alleyways between two traditional settlements that form urban identities. The descriptive-qualitative research method uses depth map software to display the observed area coverage through connectivity and visibility. The results found in this research can manifest both locations' characters in a tangible and intangible aspect. The existence of a historic alley that forms the morphology of historic settlements will keep its existence considered because it is a continuity network that creates a serial vision for observers, tourists, and also the local community. Spatial dialogue studies through serial vision theory in historic alleys are expected to provide renewal to considerations of revitalizing heritage settlements, especially in Asian countries.

Abstract

Humans and their feelings are a 'unique' study in architectural design, such as how humans behave in some spatial settings. Spatial settings are usually defined as an environment that contains specific activities. However, what about transitional spaces or corridors that only serve as intermediaries for 'some walking experience'? The discussion related to liminal space becomes interesting, mainly when studied from the perspective of architectural psychology. This study aims to investigate human experiences and perceptions of liminal spaces, focusing on two locations: the corridors and the stairs at the campus. The research method used is mixed methods, with random samplings collected through an online survey to explore feelings, visuals, and hearing responses to liminal spaces. The study results show that respondents who have experienced being in a liminal space tend to have contra-perceptions of the Alienation theory by Marx, which can be attributed to the habits of the respondents in dealing with that space and their objective nature. Meanwhile, respondents with perceptions that align with Alienation theory tend to be influenced by their feelings and visual imagination. Moreover, respondents whose perceptions aligned with the theory expressed their discomfort and anxiety caused by unconducive room conditions. This research contributes to understanding human experiences and perceptions in liminal spaces with limitations including a small number of respondents and intangible indicators, making it difficult to explain perceptions in nominal terms. Thus, this research can broaden the understanding of architectural psychology and spatial perception.

Abstract

Street corridors in a historical area are vital in forming an element of the city's image. Dr Radjiman's corridor in Surakarta is part of a historical area containing residents' daily activities. Physically, humans can visually perceive colour, ornament and material elements as a building's facade on two sides of the corridor. This study aims to trace the visual elements in the corridor, which can be seen from the physical aspect. The method used in the research is mixed-methods based, and the respondent data sample obtained is probability sampling. This research can provide a physical description of what is found around the corridor. This research found that visually, the colour, material and ornamental aspects create a diverse mix and match the dominance of white, fabricated materials and cultural acculturation ornaments such as Dutch, Chinese Peranakan and Javanese heritage ornaments. The results of this research can become scientific findings to support efforts to revitalize street corridors in Surakarta.

Abstract

The colour of a room creates a particular atmosphere, one of which is creating memories for the user. The final project studio space is a meaningful space for final architecture students. The role of human sensors, such as the sense of sight, can respond to and record visible things, such as colours and shapes, which are then stored in the brain's memory. This research aims to observe the influence of interior colours, which can influence final project student productivity, and also the possibility of the emergence of memory factors that occur. The method used in this research is a qualitative research method involving an artificial intelligence program to capture a picture of space that matches the response of space users. It is hoped that the results of this research will be a novelty for the study of architectural psychology, especially in architectural studio spaces. The results of the research that has been carried out show that colour combinations and colour preferences influence the level of productivity of final project students and the memories that are formed while using the space.

Abstract

This research examines post-pandemic strategies for designing traditional market buildings in Indonesia to accommodate the needs of older adult. The pandemic has impacted their physical and mental vulnerabilities, necessitating increased inclusive design standards. Previous research has not captured the importance of older adult preferences for post-pandemic design strategies, especially in local market buildings in Java. This research aims to provide an overview of how traditional market building designs can accommodate their preferences. This research used mixed methods, starting with a survey of 121 respondents aged 50 years and over, followed by in-depth interviews with 20 participants. Quantitative data highlights design gaps, such as a lack of greenery, inadequate parking and circulation space, and limited senior-friendly features, such as non-slip floors, seating, and ramps. The interview further detailed the older adult's needs and preferences, such as material selection, seating distribution, minimizing stairs, adding ramps and handrails, and circulation. The findings show that the current design is not sufficient to meet post-pandemic and older adult’s needs. The provision of building interior cleanliness meets minimum standards, but inclusivity is still neglected, with more than 83% of respondents stating that the design is not responsive to them. Moreover, participants emphasized the importance of reorganizing the spatial layout, including widening paths, seating for resting (or waiting), and zoning for certain commodities. The research contribution is to provide recommendations for post-pandemic traditional market designs that are responsive to the needs of the older adult. Findings advocate for traditional market spaces that are resilient and inclusive, prioritizing health and community.

Abstract

Although common spaces in a university can serve an important role for adolescents in learning with colleagues and developing their ideas, common spaces have received insufficient research attention. Therefore, this study identified the characteristics of physical environments that promote active leaning among university students and the psychological aspects of students’ modes of being in common spaces. We conducted an online questionnaire and analyzed the data (N = 144; 86 men and 58 women; mean age = 23.5 ± 5.8 years) using cluster analysis and text-mining. We revealed three types of physical characteristics that promote students’ active learning and five groups of students’ modes of being in common spaces. The physical and psychological characteristics of the common spaces that promote active learning are discussed.

Abstract

The spatial practice of women in Kampung Kauman is a concrete manifestation of the active agents of spatial production in everyday life, which uses housing to support their economic, social, and cultural activities. This paper aims to expand the idea of women-led domestic territory using the lens of interiority, highlighting women's practices that connect and expand their space in the inner space of the dwelling and beyond. This research was conducted by mapping the everyday practices of women in Kampung Kauman to reveal various spatial settings in space. This paper argues that women's practice can broaden the understanding of interiority related to houses and their neighbourhoods. The findings of this study show that the connection between domestic spaces to the neighbourhood may change depending on the women's activity, the agreement of social and cultural activities alternately in the domestic area, and shifting the domestic area into a commercial area. This spatial arrangement can guide residential areas and urban environments by considering domestic interiority in everyday life.
