Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

One of the most dangerous food industry wastes is the liquid resulting from the production of tomato sauce, which contains many organic substances and suspended solids. Electrocoagulation, a method for processing tomato sauce liquid waste, is environmentally friendly, easy to use, and saves land. Many people use plate-shaped electrodes for electrocoagulation, but cylindrical electrodes usually have lower power consumption during the process. By considering ideal conditions, this research aims to determine the ideal use of differences in current strength, pH and anode material. In addition, they also wanted to determine the specific energy consumption and amount of sludge in the cylindrical reactor. The quality of the electric current of 30 A, 35 A, and 40 A is the variable used in this research. The second variable is pH, which ranges between 6.7 and 8. The anode material used is iron, the parameters tested are pH, BOD and Phosphate. The results showed that at pH 8, a current strength of 40 A using an iron anode had a removal percentage of BOD and Phosphate of 83.52 ± 0.44% (1,358.00 mg/L) and 74.90 ± 0.98% (189. 41 mg/L). The specific energy consumption obtained for each parameter is 1.71 Wh/gBOD and 20.38 Wh/gP.

Abstract

The increasing volume of domestic wastewater due to population growth poses significant environmental challenges, requiring effective treatment solutions. This study evaluated the effect of aeration on the efficacy of Constructed Wetland-Microbial Fuel Cell (CW-MFC) system in treating domestic wastewater using Equisetum hyemale plant. Reactors with dimensions of 50 cm × 24 cm × 20 cm with a volume of 9 liters of wastewater were tested for 18 days using 8 fed-batch reactors with gravel media and graphite electrodes, with NaCl as the electrolyte solution and KCl salt bridge. Lactobacillus plantarum was used to assess the removal efficiency of Biologycal Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Suspended Solid (TSS) and pH. The results showed the CW-MFC system significantly reduced pollutants, with the highest removal rates in reactors E7 and E8 in all treatments with BOD removal efficiences 90% and 91%, COD removal efficiencies of 93% and 91% on day 15.  TSS removal efficiency of E7 was 60% and E8 was 64%. Removal pH was 25-33%.  The highest bioelectricity production was highest in reactor E7 at 990.8 mW/m² on day 15 then gradually decreased to 520 mW/m² on day 18 due to the synergistic interaction of microbes, plant aeration, and electrochemical processes. This study concludes that CW-MFC with aeration with the addition of bacteria provides the best results and can be a sustainable solution in wastewater management and clean energy.

Abstract

Sustainable domestic wastewater treatment is urgently needed amid water scarcity and rising energy demands. The Constructed Wetland–Microbial Fuel Cell (CW-MFC) system integrates phytoremediation and bioelectricity production by electroactive microorganisms, yet previous studies rarely compared the synergistic effects of different plant species within this system, limiting its optimization. This study evaluated CW-MFC performance using three plant configurations (Pistia stratiotes, Eichhornia crassipes, and their combination) integrated with Lactobacillus plantarum at two concentrations (2×10⁸ CFU/mL and 5×10⁸ CFU/mL). The reactors were operated for 18 days under identical hydraulic conditions to assess BOD, COD, ammonia, and TSS removal efficiencies and power density generation. Results showed that Eichhornia crassipes achieved the highest pollutant removal efficiencies with COD reduction up to 82%, while the system with 2×10⁸ CFU/mL bacterial concentration produced the highest power density of approximately 1032 mW/m². Interestingly, lower bacterial concentrations yielded higher power outputs, possibly due to reduced microbial competition for electron transfer sites, enhancing electroactive bacteria performance. In conclusion, integrating Eichhornia crassipes with L. plantarum at 2×10⁸ CFU/mL optimizes both pollutant removal and bioelectricity production, confirming CW-MFC as an environmentally friendly technology with potential for sustainable wastewater treatment and renewable energy generation.
