Abstract

Crisis electricity was a crucial issue in the rural area. Crossflow turbine (CFT) in pico in pico scale is the best option for electricity provider for rural areas. Due to its usefulness and development of computer technology, computational fluid dynamics method application for CFT study becomes increasingly frequent. This paper compiles the implementation of the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) approach for CFT on a pico scale. Based on the literature, the Renormalization Group (RNG)  turbulence model is recommended to predict the flow field that occurs in CFT because its error is lower than others turbulence models, the RNG  error of 3.08%, standard  of 3.19%, and transitional SST of 3.10%. Furthermore, six-degrees of freedom (6-DoF) is recommended because it has an error of 3.1% than a moving mesh of 9.5% for the unsteady approach. Thus, based on the review, the RNG  turbulence model and 6-DoF are recommended for the CFT on the pico scale.

Abstract

Communication has an important role for spreading messages and ideas through various mediums. This research explains the important role of new media in community engagement activities and the dissemination of new information, innovations and technologies that have been done in 2017, especially for the graphic design via the internet on Pico Hydro's information technology in Batu Roto village, Bengkulu province, Indonesia. Community involvement itself is based on a special multidisciplinary perspective of communication and engineering. Pico Hydro is commonly used worldwide to generate electricity in rural areas, making it very useful for rural electrification. We conduct research to meet the needs of our plans in community engagement and use the theory of communication development to support the outcomes of this program. Communication development theory has a focus on dissemination of innovation. This research method is desk research of new media. This research argues that the application of Pico Hydro technology will have more impact on Batu Roto village community when combined with the method of social communication science development through digital media. The information contained in the infografic is expected to spread the idea to train the community in applying Pico Hydro technology for many homes in Batu Roto village so that it can solve the problem of electricity shortage in Bengkulu Province. Keywords: communication development; diffusion of innovations; infografic; pico hydro; psychology of colour; typographic; rural electrification; new media; digital communication

Abstract

The breastshot waterwheels are suitable for low head condition because it offers a stable efficiency compared to other types of turbine. In some cases, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was utilized to predict the performance, geometry optimization or physical phenomena of a breastshot waterwheel, CFD offers easiness in terms of energy, time and cost than doing experimental test. Turbulence modeling is a mathematical method to approach the evolution of turbulence. The aim of this study is to identify the suitable turbulence model for a breatshot waterwheel. These three turbulence models were utilized: k-? standard, k-? scalable near wall function and SST k-?. The braking preloads in simulation was varied, which were 75 N m, 150 Nm, 225 N m and 300 N m. Based on grid convergence index (GCI), the 123k elements of mesh and timestep size of 0.002 s were used and when compared to the exact value, an error below 2% was found. Moreover, the k-? scalable near wall function model and the turbulent SST k-? model give the similar result in torque. Therefore, the simulation test to find torque will be more efficient if using the standard k-? turbulent model because it has computational time which is lower than the turbulent SST k-? model. For the eddy viscosity and turbulence intensity contour k-? standard turbulent model and k-? near wall scalable gives no significant differences, but SST k-? model doe. The simulation test to find eddy viscosity and turbulence intensity contour will be more accurate if using SST k-? model, because this model has the mean rate-of-rotation tensor function, ? , and the blending functions, that makes SST k-? model have better accuracy on the near wall calculation.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menghasilkan e book interaktif pada matakuliah sistem AC yang valid dan praktis. Subjek penelitian adalah mahasiswa pendidikan teknik mesin kampus Indralaya tahun angkatan 2013. E book interaktif sistem AC dikembangkan melalui tiga tahapan berdasarkan model pengembangan Rowntree, yaitu : perencanaan, persiapan dan pengembangan. E book interaktif sistem AC ini dikembangkan untuk media pembelajaran agar mahasiswa dapat membangun pengetahuannya secara mandiri. Setelah dilakukan pengembangan dilakukan tahapan evaluasi Tessmer, yaitu : evaluasi ahli, evaluasi orang per orang (one to one), evaluasi kelompok kecil (small group), uji coba lapangan (field test). Hasil uji validitas, kevalitan dari e book interaktif sistem AC termasuk dalam kategori valid, sedangkan untuk persentase rata-rata kepraktisan dari evaluasi kelompok kecil dan uji coba lapangan adalah 80,5% dengan kategori praktis. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa e book interaktif pada matakuliah sistem AC di program studi Pendidikan Teknik Mesin valid dan praktis.

Abstract

Energy crisis in particular, electricity in the isolated rural areas of Indonesia is a very crucial issue that needs to be resolve through electrification . Compared to other options, pico hydro cross-flow turbine (CFT) is the better option to provides electrical power for the isolated rural areas. Studies to improve CFT performance can be undertaken analytically, numerically, experimentally, or a combination of those methods. However, the development of computer technology makes numerical simulation studies have become increasingly frequent. This paper describes the utilization of the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) approach in the pico hydro CFT method. This review has resulted that the recommended Renormalization Group (RNG) k-ε turbulence model for CFT CFD simulation because its absolute relative error is lower than standard k-ε and transitional Shear Stress Transport (SST). The absolute relative error for the RNG k-ε turbulence model of 3.08%, standard k-ε of 3.19%, and transitional SST of 3.10%. While for the unsteady approach, the six-degrees of freedom (6-DoF) are considered because more accurate than moving mesh. The absolute relative error for 6-DoF of 3.1% and moving mesh of 9.5%. Thus, based on the review, the RNG k-ε turbulence model and 6-DoF are proposed for the pico hydro CFT CFD study.

Abstract

Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE) is a competition where the students design, build, and race the formula-style car. In this competition, the regulation stringent for the safety of participants. Chassis is one of the regulated parts among the other parts. This paper examines design process followed by chassis analysis by using Solidworks 2018 and Abaqus/CAE 6.14 software. The analysis process is carried out with Static Vertical Test, Torsional Stiffness Test, and Crash Impact Test using a safety standard in the form of a safety factor that must be more than 1 (SF> 1) to ensure the safety of the driver. The aim is to obtain an optimum final design based on FSAE Japan regulation as a reference for the Universitas Sriwijaya electric car team, namely Sriwijaya Eco in making the framework for the upcoming electric formula car.

Abstract

Titanium is a metal with a low density, has good heat transfer, and a high melting point; hence widely used for various purposes, such as petrochemicals, aerospace, medical, and reactors. The titanium welding process is complicated because no absence of protection against air during the welding process results in the high absorption of oxygen from free air. In this work, ASTM Gr-1 Titanium is joining using Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding method. The effect of argon flow rate on the mechanical properties of titanium welding and its microstructures is investigated by hardness and tensile tests. Then, microstructure observation to explore the fusion zone and heat-affected zone. Furthermore, phase formation during the welding process is analyzed using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method. The tensile test revealed that maximum tensile strength was obtained at a 60 l/m argon flow rate while minimum tensile strength was received at 25 l/min. The hardness test shows that maximum hardness was obtained at 25 l/min on the fusion zone.

Abstract

A pico-hydro-type crossflow turbine (CFT) with an off-grid system configuration is a suitable option to increase the electrification ratio in remote or rural areas because it has a simple shape and can be applied in run-of-river conditions. Yet, a comprehensive study is necessary for the CFT to be applied to run-of-river conditions (low head and extreme fluctuation discharge), since this is categorized as an impulse turbine. One solution to optimize the CFT’s performance in this context is to increase the lift force. Hence, this study investigated the effect of the upper blade of the CFT with convex and curved configurations using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. The CFD transient approach uses a moving mesh feature, and the solver is pressure-based in low-head conditions (5 m pressure). The CFD results and analysis of variance (ANOVA) calculation results from this study reveal that the upper CFT affects the performance of the turbine. The relationship of the CFT performance with the rotation and specific speed is parabolic. The express empirical law relation for performance to rotation is a four-order polynomial, and for performance to a specific speed, a three-order polynomial. Based on empirical laws, a CFT with a convex blade is recommended for conditions with low head and extreme fluctuation discharge since it has a wider range of specific speeds than a curved blade, propeller, or Kaplan, Pelton, or Francis turbine. Doi: 10.28991/CEJ-2023-09-01-012 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

Chain–submerged scrapper conveyor bottom ash handling in the petrochemical industry has failed several times and was repaired with AISI 420, which can only operate for three months. AISI 420 is recommended in applications requiring moderate corrosion resistance, high hardness, excellent wear resistance, and good edge retention in cutting surfaces. The initial cracks and fractures occur in the pin-link joint hole, which causes chain failure. Some evaluation has been performed for both as-received and failed links. It can be concluded that chain link failure occurs due to fatigue failure with low-stress levels. Microstructure observation, XRD, and hardness properties showed no significant difference in both as-received and failed links. Since the operating conditions of the chain are in a corrosive environment, experiencing dynamic loading and working temperatures between 23 ºC and 60 ºC, the selection of HSL materials such as AISI 4140 should be considered.

Abstract

Rata-rata anak putus sekolah yang ada di Keluruhan Permata Baru (Mandala) kecamatan Indralaya Utara Ogan Ilir menginginkan merubah nasib dengan cara mendapatkan penghasilan yang lebih layak dengan pekerjaan yang bisa diandalkan. Kelanjutan dari pembicaraan informal telah dapat disimpulkan bahwa mereka menginginkan untuk bisa berusaha sendiri (berwirausaha) yang memiliki core business dengan keterampilan mereka yaitu Jasa pengelasan. Hal ini didasarkan pada pendapat mereka juga bahwa tiap tahunnya ada banyak perumahan yang dibangun dan membutuhkan trail, pagar, dan kanopi untuk keamanan dan estetika. Pengabdian masyarakat ini memiliki tujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan keterampilan pengelasan dan skill dalam bidang mengelola usaha. Pada tahap awal, seluruh peserta dikumpukan dan diberikan evaluasi awal untuk melihat bagaimana tingkat pemahaman peserta pelatihan yang nantinya akan dibandingkan dengan tes akhir (pre-test). Selanjunya tahap pelaksanaan kegiatan. Peserta pelatihan akan diberikan pemahaman secara awal secara umum tentang materi pelatihan yang berhubungan dengan pengelasan, sehingga peserta akan paham tentang materi yang disampaikan. Materi yang diberikan menggunakan metode caramah, metode diskusi, demontrasi dan praktek langsung Tahap akhir kegiatan ini yaitu evaluasi akhir. Tujuan akhir dari kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah memberikan pengetahuan dan pemahaman terhadap bagaimana cara melakukan pengelasan, finishing, dan pengecatan. Penilaian keberhasilan dari kegiatan ini dapat dilihat melalui kemajuan pengetahuan dan pemahaman serta keterampilan melalui perbandingan antara tes awal dan tes akhir.
