Abstract

Speaking is an assential skill that used be mastered by the Students, because it is necessary for them to improve their ability to communicate orally by presenting their ideas and opinions in real life. Digital storytelling is the practice of using computer-based tools to tell stories. It can be used as homework, classroom group projects, or a holiday project for students. In relation to this, the purpose of the research is to find out is there any significant effect of digital storytelling on students’ speaking ability. Then, Describing and analyzing the effectiveness of digital storytelling in enhancing students’ speaking ability. in this study, the researcher used experimental research. An experimental usually involves two groups of subject, an experimental group and a control group. The population of this research was the fifth semester of English students of FKIP - Islamic University of Riau in academic year 2018/2019. The sampling technique used in this research is purposive sampling. The researcher choose 5B as experimental class which consist of 26 students and 5C as control class which consist of 25 students. The reseracher used speaking test as instrument which included in pre-test and post-test. The results of the research revealed that ttest > ttable (14,402>2.05954), ttable on degree freedom (df) 25 on the level of significant 0.05. Consequently, it means that the alternative hypothesis is accepted while the null hypothesis is rejected. So, the conclusion of the research has shown that there is positive effect of digital storytelling towards students’ speaking ability.

Abstract

Assessment is the ways of teachers/lecturers gather data about their teaching and their students’ learning. In order to grapple with what seems to be an over use of testing, educators should frame their view of testing as assessment and that assessment is information. In relation to this, the researcher interested in conducting a study which is focus on assessing Informatics Engineering students’ competence in English. The researcher used descriptive research. The population of the reaserch was the informatics Engineering students which total students was 160 students at the second semester. Purposive sampling used in this study in order to focus the finding which the number of sample was 40 students. This study used formative and summative assessment in assessing students’ comptence in English. Following that, the data was collected during teaching and learning process in form of observation, documentation, and test. After that, the data was analyzed by using statistical in term of norm-references and criterion-references. Based on the result of this study, it could be concluded that the formative assessment format mostly designed in speaking and listening test format and summative assessment was applied all in English skills format since the lecturer consider that it is beneficial for students to master the particular skills as the requirements for applying into their careers.

Abstract

This research discusses the students’ speaking ability of Procedure Text at the Second Grade Students of SMA Tri Bhakti Pekanbaru. The objective of the research is to know the students’ speaking ability in procedure text and to find out which aspectt is the most dominant problem for the students in speaking. The design of this research was qualitative research. The result of data was students’ comprehension score was 3.15 because most of them understood the directions on the speaking test well and they also conveyed the procedure text sequentially using the simple present tense correctly so that the listener could understand them although there were several problems. Students’ fluency score was 3.15 because most of the students’ present the procedure text fluently and smoothly even though some students stammered and paused several times. Students’ grammar score was 3.13 because most of them were good at arranging their sentences correctly according to the grammar rules using the simple present tense even though they made some mistakes. The students' pronunciation score was 2.86 because some students had difficulty in pronouncing some words and there were some confusions with the listener, although not all students did so. Students’ vocabulary score was 2.92 because some students had problem with vocabulary mastery and use inappropriate vocabulary, but overall the students have sufficient vocabulary to express tips simply related to the topic. In conclusion, the students' speaking ability on procedure text is in a good category.
