Abstract

This research aims to (1) analyze translation techniques by using Molina’s & Albir’s theory (2002) in the text of the Immigration Law in English,  (2) analyze the quality of the translation in terms of accuracy, acceptability and readability by using Nababan's theory (2012) in translating legal of the Immigration Law into English; and (3) analyze the impact of translation techniques on the quality of the translation in the text of the Immigration Law in English. This research is qualitative research with a descriptive approach.  The source of data is the Immigration Law written in two languages, namely Indonesian as the source text (TS) and English as the target language  (TL). Based on the analysis, it is found that: (1) In the translation of the Immigration Law, there are 12 translation techniques used, namely 64 (39%) literal, 36 (22%) calque, 24 (14%) established equivalent, 10 (6.2%) generalization, 9 (5.5%) borrowing, 4 (2,4%) linguistic amplification, 2 (1.2%) particularization, 5 (3.1%) transposition, 1 (0.6%) compensation, 3 (1.8%) modulation, 2 (1.2%) reduction and 1 (0.6%) adaptation. (2) The total score for the translation quality is 2,77% which is the quality of translation almost perfect. (3) The most dominant translation technique used in translating this legal text is literal technique (39%) which is the dominant technique that gives impact to translation quality.

Abstract

Dalam sebuah pembelajaran tentunya membutuhkan sebuah metode yang tepat untuk mendapatkan hasil yang maksimal. Pencapaian tujuan dalam pengabdian masyarakat berupa penyelenggaraan kegiatan pelatihan bahasa Inggris adalah peningkatan motivasi atau kemauan diri, pemahaman dan kemampuan siswa/i dalam belajar sebuah bahasa. Adapun tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimanakah kemampuan siswa dalam mempelajari tatabahasa Inggris dengann menggunakan metode CTL dan untuk mengetahui bagaimanakah pengaruh metode tersebut terhadap semangat proses belajar mengajar siswa. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan untuk mengetahui hasil dari tujuan penelitian ini peneliti menggunakan pendekatan kulaitatif berupa penelitian lapangan. Kesimpulan yang diperoleh setelah dilakukannya penelitian bahwa: 1) Pelatihan Memotivasi Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris Melalui Metode Belajar CTL Di MAS Tahfizil Qur’andanMTs Hifzhil Qur’an Sumatera Utara telah dilakukan dan hasilnya sangat memuaskan. 2)Metode belajar Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) yang telah di terapkan kepada siswa MAS Tahfizil Qur’andanMTs Hifzhil Qur’an Sumatera Utara memberikan hasil yang signifikan dimana para siswa termotivasi dan dapat mengikuti metode tersebut sehingga pemahaman terhadap struktur grammar kalimat langsung dan kalimat tidak langsung dipahami secara menyeluruh dalam waktu yang relative singkat. 3) Kemampuan siswa dalam memahami grammar setelah diajarkan dengan menggunakan metode belajar CTL meningkat dalam persentase 75% hasil memuaskan di MAS Tahfizil Qur’an dan 70% hasil memuaskan di MTs Hifzhil Qur’an Sumatera Utara. 4) Antusiasme dari para siswa terhadap metode yang mereka anggap baru ini tergolong baru.

Abstract

Indonesian learners when learning English as a foreign language often make mistakes in collocation. The collocation mistakes may be due to the ignorance of collocation and the transfer of collocation of their first language, Indonesian to English. The aim of the present study is to find out the command of English collocation by the Third Year students of SMA Bhayangkari 1, Medan. Before teaching them English collocation, a pretest on collocation is administered and after the teaching of collocation a post-test on collocation is administered in order to find out if their command of collocation increases. Findings show that there is an increase of score 4.425. The average score of the students’ command of collocation is 65.78 out of 100 as the maximum score. It can be concluded that the students’ mastery of collocation is still moderate. Therefore an extensive teaching of collocation for the students is still needed.

Abstract

This paper aims to introduce the modesty model of the qurani language as an alternative foundation of the politeness theories of language that have been taught so far. This model is important to be applied in the life of industrial revolution society 4.0. Fundamentally the industrial revolution 4.0 has caused changes in the way humans live, think, and interact in establishing relationships with one another. In turn this era has disrupted various human activities. These include language activities which are a form of social interaction. The phenomenon of impoliteness, harassment (bullying), and verbal violence is increasingly massive in the real world. Even the industrial revolution 4.0 which provides easy internet access and advances in information technology has also led to an increase in the phenomenon of hate speech, the dissemination of hoaxes and cyber bullying that can threaten social harmony and the unity of the multicultural Indonesian nation. Therefore it is necessary to develop a polite language education model based on religious teachings.

Abstract

This paper aims to find out the types of pragmatic failures that can lead to incorrect understanding of meaning by the audience. Pragmatic failure in translation consists of two failures, namely: pragmalinguistic failure and sociopragmatic failure. Pragmalinguistic failures in translation are analyzed using speech act theory proposed by Searle and deixis theory proposed by Levinson. Sociopragmatic failures in translation are analyzed using the principle of cooperation theory proposed by Grice and the principle of politeness theory proposed by Brown and Levinson. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. One hundred seventy-six pragmatic failures are found in the subtitles of Moonlight movie, which is divided into one hundred thirty-six pragmalinguistic failures and forty sociopragmatic failures. Pragmalinguistic failures that occur are the failures to transfer speech acts and deixis of oral speech into subtitles. Sociopragmatic failures that occur are the failures to transfer principle of cooperation of oral speech into subtitles.

Abstract

Objective: This research was titled “Impolite Reader’s Responses on Online BBC News Comments”. This research found out the impoliteness strategies on BBC News comments. Materials and Methods. The research used a qualitative method. The data were the BBC News Comments. The data were analyzed by the theory of Culpeper. Results. Based on the data analysis found that the data of impoliteness strategy consisted of fifty responses, such as positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm and mock, and bald on record. Positive impoliteness strategy gained 26 utterances (54%) which contained 7 utterances (14%) for inappropriate identity markers, 6 (12%) for ignorance, 4 (8%) utterances for discussing a sensitive topic, 2 utterances (4%) for each secretive language and taboo words, and only one (2%) utterance for disinterested. Then, it was followed by a negative impoliteness strategy that gained 16 utterances (30%), which contained 8 utterances (16%) for condescending, 5 utterances (10%) for explicitly associating, and 2 utterances (4%) for frightened. While, sarcasm and mock gained 6 utterances (12%), and bald on record only gained 2 utterances (4%) for dismissal. Conclusion. The use of the impoliteness strategy in this data conveys an impolite response by using some of the characteristics of the impoliteness strategy. From all types of impoliteness, with-holding impoliteness strategy can’t be found in this research because it should be mostly found in direct two-way interactions rather than responses in the commentary column.

Abstract

Various TV channels established with various talk shows stand out among other shows for presenting bitter facts in a very light-hearted way by commenting, satirizing, analyzing and criticizing in a very funny style. "The Daily Show with Trevor Noah" is a very popular comedy talk show in the United States because of its high language, witty praise, and especially the characters of "The Daily Show with Trevor Noah" criticizing various aspects of society. The aims of this study are to categorize various types of satire and reveal Trevor Noah's technique in expressing satire. This study uses a qualitative descriptive design with a sample of six episodes of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah downloaded from the official comedy center website. The data concentrated on the Satire utterances of the host of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah were analyzed using interactive analysis. The results of the analysis showed that three types of satire appeared in the event: 21 Horatian satires, 13 juvenile satires, and 16 Menippean satires. The satire that is used in the daily show has conveyed a message of criticism of someone's ideas and behavior based on what they have said and done based on events that actually happened. Sacrificial conclusions have become the most powerful and effective way of getting a message across, even today, no matter what means a satirist chooses to create their work.

Abstract

Indonesia has high linguistic and cultural diversity, where multilingualism is common, especially in the Chinese community. In Medan, the use of mixed language between Chinese (Hokkien), Indonesian, and English, known as Chindolish, is often encountered daily, including in the school environment. At Hang Kesturi School Medan, English teachers usually use Chindolish as a communication strategy to help students understand the subject matter more quickly. This study aims to find out the types of Chindolish code mix used by teachers and the reasons behind its use in the context of language teaching. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach, and data were collected through observation and interviews with five teachers from September to December 2023. The results showed 120 code-mixed utterances, with 30 of them being Chindolish classified based on Hoffman and Musyken's theory. The findings revealed that intra-lexical and intra-sentential code-mixing were the most frequently used types. In addition, the interviews identified that the teachers' main motivations in using code-mixing were to facilitate students' understanding, overcome language barriers, and create closeness between teachers and students. This study provides insights into multilingual practices in educational contexts in multicultural environments and their implications for language teaching.

Abstract

English learners may be influenced by culture when giving and responding to compliments. This is because they learn language through culture. In this study, tribes have different compliment response strategies. That is why cross-cultural variations cannot be ignored in terms of pragmatics. The aim of this research is to analyze the similarities and differences of compliment strategies and compliment response strategies to see the effect of culture on NJ and NNJ when giving and responding to compliments. This research is a contrastive analysis and uses qualitative methods. The data used are the answers of the participants contained in the questionnaire. The participants are 10 speakers, 5 native Javanese (NJ) and 5 non-native Javanese speakers learning English (NNJ) from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd students of English Postgraduate Program using questionnaires and interviews as research instruments. The findings of this research show that NJ and NNJ are "partly correspondence" in terms of compliment strategies and compliment responses strategies. The results of the research on compliments and responses show that NJ and NNJ use some of the same strategies but differ in the frequency of their use. Then, the research results on compliment responses show that acceptance with amendment: comment and non-acceptance: avoidance are the most frequently used by NJ, while acceptance: appreciation token is the most frequently used by NNJ. The results shows that NJ tended to adopt Javanese culture, which is characterized by "andhop ashor" or humility, while NNJ adopted Western culture, which is more expressive and direct.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the stylistic and linguistic selection in representing women in Jane Austen’s novel entitled Emma by emphasizing the gender specific words presented in the novel and discover the gender specific theme exposed in the novel. This research conducts a qualitative analysis to explore the stylistic and linguistic choices employed in depicting women in Jane Austen's novel, "Emma." Focusing on gender-specific words within the text, the study aims to uncover the novel's thematic presentation of gender. Utilizing Sara Mills' feminist stylistics theory as a framework, the linguistic structure at the word level is examined to portray female characters and assess its societal impact. By decoding Austen's linguistic strategies, this analysis provides a critical lens for examining gender representation within the novel and its broader societal implications. The study contributes to literary and linguistic scholarship, enhancing the understanding of Austen's narrative techniques and shedding light on societal perceptions of gender.
