Abstract

Solar energy is one of the sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sources. However, this renewable energy is still not widely utilized by the people of Indonesia even though Indonesia, as a tropical country, has vast solar energy potential. Hence, It is essential to introduce and socialize solar energy potential to the general public. The partner of this community outreach program is Mekar Lestari Orphanage in South Tangerang. The orphanage care for children aged 3-16 years from various backgrounds. As a younger generation, it is hopeful that they can develop a mindset of solar energy as one of the renewable energy sources that can replace fossil fuels. In addition, the Mekar Lestari Orphanage in its social role requires a facility with adequate lighting. However, there was a lack of lighting in the front yard of the orphanage, making access to the facility difficult, especially at night. Therefore, a solar energy-based lighting system has been built and installed on the front gate of the orphanage. After installing the lighting system, socialization about the basic theory of solar energy and how the solar-powered lighting system works was conducted. The evaluation of the event, attended by representatives of staff and children living in the orphanage, showed that all participants gained new knowledge and a deeper understanding of solar energy. In addition, they learned new skills to operate and maintain solar lighting systems. From the positive feedback during the socialization, it is hopeful that this activity can provide education on the actual application of solar energy and help to improve lighting conditions in the orphanage.

Abstract

Aquarium cleaning is routine maintenance that must be done to maintain dissolved oxygen levels in the water to ensure the survival of aquatic biota. Maintaining cleanliness and water quality is key to preventing the water in the aquarium from becoming cloudy and emitting a foul odor due to increased ammonia levels in the water. However, aquarium cleaning is quite time-consuming and laborious, which becomes a problem for Jakarta Aquatics, which is engaged in selling and purchasing ornamental fish. As a solution, a prototype cleaning equipment that can simplify the process of maintaining the cleanliness of the water in the aquarium was designed and built. In general, the cleaning equipment designed consists of an acrylic screen that acts as a pseudo-base that collects fish waste at the bottom of the aquarium tank. Pumps are then used to remove water and waste from the aquarium easily, so there is no need to remove aquarium inhabitants during the cleaning process, thereby minimizing the possibility of fish death due to stress. The method used during the outreach program includes conducting a survey, performing a design process, and demonstrating on how to use and maintain the cleaning equipment. To assess the success of this program, Jakarta Aquatics owners and employees were asked to fill out a questionnaire. The questionnaire results showed that partners were more than satisfied with the equipment performance and the demonstration event. It is hoped that using this cleaning equipment in their aquariums can help improve the productivity of Jakarta Aquatics employees.

Abstract

Fie Fie Joe animal shelter employees and visitors often physically contact animals while feeding, playing with, or cleaning animals and their cages. In order to prevent virus and bacteria transmission, animal shelters require everyone to wash their hands after visiting the outdoor area. The Fie Fie Jo shelter, however, faced two main problems. First, only one hand-washing station is available in their facility, allowing possible viruses or bacteria to be transmitted through physical contact with other people or objects before entering the indoor facility. Second, their staff took a long time to bathe the animals in their enclosures since there was no washing station in the outdoor area. Therefore, this outreach program aims to design and build a multi-purpose washing station for the outdoor area that can be operated by a foot pedal so that users do not need to touch the faucet physically. The washing station has additional features such as a large tub that can also be used for bathing animals, a tissue holder, and a garbage disposal to help make it easier and faster to bathe several animals simultaneously. The method used during the outreach program includes conducting a survey, performing a design process, and demonstrating how to use and maintain the multi-purpose washing station. To assess the success of this program, the Fie Fie Jo owner and employees were asked to fill out a questionnaire. The results showed that they were more than satisfied with the demonstration and performance of the washing station. The presence of the multi-purpose washing station can improve productivity and reduce the risk of viruses and bacterial contamination of the Fie Fie Joe animal shelter employees and visitors.

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the countries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus is by regularly washing hands with soap for 20 seconds. With the pandemic conditions improving and the government lifting COVID restrictions, learning institutions can continue learning activities with the requirement that they obey strict health protocols. One of the private tutoring institutions in Tangerang that has resumed operations is Hikari Private Tutoring. With many people using the same facilities for educational activities, Hikari Private Tutoring is required to provide facilities for washing hands. Based on the inputs from Hikari Private Tutoring management, a touchless hand-washing facility was designed to minimize COVID-19 transmission. The hand washing facility also has an LCD to play videos of correct hand washing procedures and show how long the user has washed their hands. At the end of this activity, the manager and staff of Hikari Private Tutoring were asked to fill out a questionnaire. The results showed that they were satisfied with the functionality of the touchless hand-washing facilities. This hand-washing facility can hopefully help educate the public, particularly the staff and students of Private Tutoring, on the correct technique to wash their hands and prevent the spread of COVID-19.
