Abstract

Citing other authors works is essential in Research Articles (RAs).  The citation is used to support claims academically. The citation is described as a way to interact with the readers and to acknowledge other scholars. Viewing from Appraisal framework developed by Martin and White [1] which is based on Halliday’s interpersonal metafunction, this activity is described as Engagement system. This study focused on exploring acknowledgement, a branch of  Engagement system, found in Mechanical Engineering RAs published by Elsevier. Applying qualitative method, the data were taken from five research articles of Mechanical Engineering in 2021. Thus, the data were examined using the framework of Engagement system. What can be highlighted from the results is that the acknowledgment serving as citation may be realized by projection of mental and verbal clauses with limited choice of lexical verbs, such as report, emphasize, propose, realizing both types of process. Nevertheless, the implication of this study may help EAP practitioners in teaching citation of RAs for Mechanical Engingeering  learners.

Abstract

Google Translate has gained popularity due to some improvements to produce accurate translations since 2016. However, there is an on-going debate over the accuracy of Google Translate products. In response to this issue, the current study investigates how Google Translate interprets source language, particularly relative clauses into target language and how accurate the translation products are. This study used a qualitative case study. Moreover, the study used some chapters from an engineering textbook together with their translation version as primary data. The data in the form of relative clauses were put on a table side by side. It was then analysed and evaluated using a comparative method to find out similarity and differences. The study found that dominantly current Google Translate uses literal and expansion techniques. Furthermore, the findings suggest that GT produces accurate translation when translating relative clauses.

Abstract

Lexical cohesion can be found in both written and spoken texts. It is critical because it is a device to make text cohesive and coherent. Consequently, lexical cohesion serves as an indicator to measure whether a text is cohesive or coherent. However, using lexical cohesion appropriately is challenging, especially for non-native English learners. Therefore, the purpose of this article was to analyze lexical cohesion found in spoken text. This study applied qualitative method and the data were collected from five podcasts of The Global Story podcast by the BBC World Service YouTube channel. In analyzing the data, the theory of lexical cohesion proposed by Paltridge (2022) was applied. The results reveal that all types of lexical cohesion, such as repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, meronymy, and collocation are found in the data. Among them, collocation is the most frequently used. Moreover, lexical cohesion in podcasts shows its essential role in maintaining coherence and facilitating comprehension in spoken text. These findings can be used as the reference for improving the vocabulary of non-native English learners, especially for spoken use.

Abstract

This paper is concerned with integral citation employed by English students of Politeknik Negeri Bandung in their Final Project Reports (FPR). Thus, the aims of this study were to investigate the most integral citation type used by the students in their FPR. In conducting the study, 18 FPR focusing on analysis produced in 2022 were collected as data source. Applying qualitative method and text analysis, the results reveal several things. First, the students favor integral citation than non-integral citation. Second, verb controlling appears more than naming. In verb controlling citation, lexical verb state is commonly used compared with other lexical verbs. Whereas in naming, the phrase according to + the cited authors is the mostly used. this study has implication in improving the students’ academic skills, especially in doing citation.

Abstract

Introductory textbooks of undergraduate students contain commonly accommodate numerous technical terms which are commonly in form of abstract nouns. The technical terms naturally represent the knowledge of the discipline which serve to build the knowledge of the field. Unfortunately, the technical terms tend to use abstract words which require definition to understand them. Hence, understanding the construction of a definition will help the learners of the field understand the texts. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the construction of definition appearing in technical terms appearing in disciplinary texts, like mechanical engineering textbooks. The qualitative data were collected from introductory textbooks of mechanical engineering. The results of analysis using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) reveal several findings. First, definition is realized by clause complex consisting of main clause and subordinate clause. Consequently, the clause has hypotactic relation and semantic one. The main clause is realized by intensive clause with relational process realized by some lexical verbs. Whereas subordinate clause is realized by non-finite or finite clause of possessive or circumstantial clause. The subordinate clause semantically serves as elaboration of the Thing in the main clause. The elaboration can be formed as function/properties/duration/condition/results which make the Thing in the main clause definite. Based on these findings, definition can be formulated as intensive clause (main clause) + possessive/circumstantial clause of non-finite/finite clause (subordinate clause). The findings also have implication on ESP or EAP learning which can help learners in academic reading and writing.
