Abstract

This research aims to find out the students’ sensory preferred on learning style in learning English at English Department of Sorong Muhammadiyah University. Learning styles is a part of human being. Every person has an individual learning style. Individuals in learning has a variety of ways, some learned by listening, some learned by reading, and each students bring their own style to the classroom. Similarity, just as the learners learn in different ways, so also lecturer teach in different ways. This research was conducted in English Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong, the researcher took the representative of two classes at fifth semester. The researcher use questionnaire and Interview to find out the students’ sensory preferred learning style in learning English. The researchers found that the result of interview students dominant used visual learning style and 28.2% of participants is visual learners. However, visual learners were majority, the lecturer also discovered that students were able to receive the information when the lecturer delivered the information in auditory or kinesthetic way. The researchers found that language learning style between result interview and questionnaire were same. Visual learners are minority. In this case, the teacher needs to help students when they feel hard to understand. The teacher should also create the best appropriate teaching method to fulfill students’ language learning style during English class. Keyword: Student’s Preferred, Learning Styles, Learning

Abstract

This research aims to find out how the pedagogical competence of teachers in learning English as a foreign language at MTs. Negeri Model Sorong City. The theory that the researchers examined as the basis of this research was the concept of pedagogic competence, definition of teacher, the objective of pedagogic competence, teaching and learning English as foreign language, the objective of learning English, and teacher classroom management. The research was conducted at MTs Negeri Model Sorong City 2022. The approach used was a qualitative with descriptive methods. Data collection techniques used were interviews and questionnaires. The instrument in this research was the researchers themselves assisted by some colleagues assisted by using interview guidelines, questionnaires sheet, and recording devices. The role in the research was the researchers themselves, some students, and English teachers at the school. The result of this research shows that the English teachers’ pedagogical competence was good enough quality. It was shown that the teachers fulfill the scope of the pedagogical competence of the teachers. This is also supported by the acquisition of percentage or average results from questionnaire data 8.9% in aspect of understanding of students, 10.2% in aspect of learning planning, 10.6% in aspect implementation of educative and dialogical learning, 5.8% in aspect utilization technology of learning, 9.5% in aspect evaluation of learning outcomes, 7.3% in aspect development of student potential, 10,7% in aspect understanding of education insights or foundations, and 9.9% in aspect development of curriculum or syllabus.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore aspects of discourse analysis through Van Dijk's approach to folklore. This folklore contains many educational values, ethics, norms as well as socio-cultural aspects. For the analysis of discourse on folklore, the Van Dijk model, which emphasizes elements of critical discourse, was used (Critical Discourse Analysis). This research is library research by using the naturalistic approach with Van Dijk model analysis. The result of this research was the aspects analyzed of macrostructure and microstructure. The macro structure is thematic and schematic. The element analyzed the essence of the theme of the discourse. That is morality (admirable nature) or “good morality”. In the micro structure analyzed aspects of semantic, syntax, stylictic, and rethoric. In semantic aspect analyzed conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, social meaning, affective meaning, reflective meaning, collocative meaning and thematic meaning.

Abstract

This research aims at finding out the types of code-switching used by the students in the English as a foreign language classroom interaction. The research employed descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects were the students of English language education program. All of them used Papuan Malay language in their daily life but in class they used Indonesian language as mother tongue and English language as target language. The researcher findings that there are five types of code-switching that used by the students in EFL classroom interaction. Those Inter – sentential, Intra – sentential, and tag switching. For each type, the switch frequently used was as a clause, then as a word, and the last was as a sentence. They used them to clarify what they said because they tended to repeat or tried to translate the words again, and another reason was switching the words into the daily language was one of the ways to use to continue speaking. The impact of code-switching on TEFL was extremely beneficial since it may be utilized as a method or tactic in teaching English content, pushing students to talk, evaluating problems, and encouraging students to keep speaking in EFL classroom.

Abstract

Alat peraga sederhana merupakan media utama dalam proses pembelajaran agar dapat mempengaruhi pikiran, perhatian, serta keterampilan siswa sehingga mendorong kemauan belajarnya saat proses belajar mengajar di dalam kelas maupun di luar kelas. Alat peraga sederhana yang dimanfaatkan berasal dari bahan di lingkungan sekitar ataupun dapat dibuat sendiri, dalam penggunaannya alat peraga sederhana dapat membantu literasi dan numerasi siswa dalam lingkup pendidikan. Tujuan yang ingin dicapai pada pelaksanaan kegiatan ini adalah penggunaan alat peraga sederhana dalam meningkatkan literasi dan numerasi Bahasa Inggris siswa dengan membaca atau memahami kosa kata Bahasa Inggris sederhana dan mengenali pengucapan angka dalam Bahasa Inggris di sekolah SD YPK Kharisma Kota Sorong. Metode diskusi, pendampingan, dan penyuluhan adalah metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan ini selama agustus hingga desember. Dari hasil pelaksanaannya dapat disimpulkan siswa SD YPK Kharisma menunjukkan peningkatan jumlah siswa yang aktif menyebutkan kosa kata bahasa inggris yang ditanyakan, yang awalnya tidak ada seorang siswa pun, menjadi semua siswa di dalam kelas yang antusias dalam menjawab soal yang diberikan serta berpartisipasi aktif dalam proses belajar mengajar dalam kelas.

Abstract

In achieving successful learning in education, parents can be a big trigger that can influence it. Whereas in the coastal area, Parents' involvement in learning language has only been investigated by a few former researchers. While Sorong as a coastal area that has been a transit area for Internasional tourism to Raja Ampat, learning the English Language becomes important. For the reason, the recent research aimed to describe the role of parents to motivate students to learn Language at a school in Sorong as a coastal area. The questionnaire was used to collect the data in a quantitative research design. The data has shown that the parents’ role in motivating students to learn English is showed as enough category with 59.62 scales based on the questionnaires’ answers of 24 Parents in Junior hight school 1 of Sorong. Among the three parents' main roles, the motivator was the role that the most involved by parents in 66 scales in the Good category. The second is as an educator, 58 scales as Enough Category, and the last is as a facilitator, 54.6 scales, in Enough Category. The recent research revealed that the parents' role as motivator, facilitator, and educator in motivation their children to learn English in the Coastal area still need to be improved because it is only at enough category.

Abstract

Writing is seen as a difficult skill that persists among the students which affected the students' writing test scores and lack enthusiasm in writing. From this primary issue, an effective tool is needed in learning both inside and outside the classroom, one of which is the use of Instagram which is collaborated in learning to write. So, this study aimed to investigate students' enthusiasm in using Instagram as a learning tool for text-writing. This study used quantitative research as its method and the instrument used in this research was questionnaires. The population of this study was students at SMA KARTIKA XX-I Makassar and the number of samples were 28 students to gain the data needed. The analysis of the data shows that students got 32% in the interested classification and 68% in strongly interested. So, it can be said students might more enthusiasm for writing by using Instagram as a social media platform.

Abstract

Reading habit must be instilled and developed in children from an early age. Motivating children to read has its own challenges in the midst of such rapid developments. Especially in cultivating the spirit of reading English texts. Educators are expected to have creativity in managing a more creative learning process so that it attracts students to be more motivated to learn. Reading is an important skill that must be possessed by students, so it is considered important to provide assistance to strengthen English reading literacy for students at the elementary school level, so that students get used to reading from an early age. Therefore, the purpose of this community service is to foster a spirit of English literacy in elementary school students. One way to achieve this goal is to use cooperative learning methods, namely studying with groups of four to five people, each adapted to a different level of ability, gender, ethnicity or race. This activity combines smart, easy, fast, and fun learning features. The group learning method is part of the activity implementation methodology. This activity involved YPK Elim Malanu elementary school students, Sorong, Southwest Papua who were in grades two and three. The implementation of this activity takes place from August to December 2021. From the results of this activity it can be concluded that group learning can foster students' interest and enthusiasm in English literacy.

Abstract

English is a new thing for early-grade students at SD Negeri 29 Kota Sorong, even though the introduction of English can be done in various exciting ways, one of which is making crafts appropriate to the age of early-grade students. In this activity, the introduction to English is carried out by making crafts using attractive shapes and colors and by forming objects by sticking origami paper to shape houses or caterpillars using simple English. Partners participating in this activity were 30 students from grade 1 and 16 from grade 2 at SD Negeri 29 Kota Sorong. The results of this activity showed that the early grades were very enthusiastic about getting to know colors and shapes in English. They are very responsive, passionate, and active in demonstrating the work made.

Abstract

Perlunya mempersiapkan generasi muda dalam mengembangkan pariwisata di Misool Raja Ampat melalui penguasaan Bahasa Inggris menjadi urgensi pelaksanaan pemberdayaan masyarakat ini. Selain itu, dengan penguasaan Bahasa Inggris tentunya generasi muda akan mampu menunjukkan kualitas dan kekhasan daerahnya lebih baik dari sebelumnya. Mengingat, masih kurangnya keterampilan Bahasa Inggris siswa SMP Negeri 18 Raja Ampat yang berlokasi di Misool dan belum adanya metode yang tepat yang dinyatakan oleh kepala sekolah yang bisa membuat mereka lebih mampu mempersiapkan generaasi muda yang natabenenya sering mendampingi turis yang berkunjung ke daerah mereka. Maka pelatihan Bahasa Inggris Dasar melalui English Camp perlu dilakukan. Berdasar pada penglaman pengabdi dalam melaksanakan English Camp, kegiatan ini berhasil meningkatkan kemampuan percakapan Bahasa Inggris dasar 100 % peserta kegiatan stingkat lebih baik dari sebelum dilaksanakan kegiatan. Selain itu, PKM ini juga menghasilkan satu modul untuk diserahkan kepada sekolah yang menjadikan sekolah mampu mengadopsi kegiatan yang dilakukan secara mandiri sebagai bagian dari keberlanjutan program.
