Abstract

This research was aimed to create aromatic candle, infused with cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmanii) bark essential oil, which is a potential repellant for house fly (Musca domestica).  The distillation of akar wangi samples was carried out at the Spice and Aromatic Research Unit by vapor distillation method for 9-12 hours. The aromatic candles were based on a mixture of solid paraffin and stearin in a 2:8 proportion, respectively, enriched with fragrant root bark essential oils with 5 formulas, namely F1 (placebo), F2 (fixative), F3 (1% essential oil), F4 (2% essential oil), and F5 (3% essential oil).  The repellency test was carried out by inserting 20 house flies in a of 50x50x50 cm container that contains a lighted aromatic candle according to the doses mentioned above, and shrimp scalps located 15 cm from the candle that functions as a bait. The calculated parameters were the hourly number of flies that were allured to the bait for 6 hours, which were related to the candles repellency and the house flys preference of candle. The repulsion ability result were 89.724%, 75.28%, 68.06%, 49.17%, 9.72% for F5, F4, F3, F2, and F1, respectively. The result also showed that the F4 sample was the most preferred sample.

Abstract

Skills in thinking to solve every problem in the form of higher order thinking skills (HOTS) are competencies that must be possessed by 21st century students. HOTS for Indonesian students based on the analysis of PISA results is still considered very lacking, One of the efforts to improve students' HOTS, teaching materials are made in the form of HOTS-based electronic modules. The aim of this research is to develop an e-module based on HOTS, as well as to determine the effectiveness of the e-module being developed. This study uses a development that refers to the 4-D technique initiated by Thiagarajan namely define, design, develop, and disseminate. This research involved 35 grade VIII students of SMPN 2 Dramaga, selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data collection was carried out through HOTS tests and questionnaires. Analysis of research data using paired t-test and N-Gain test. The results of the analysis show that after the use of HOTS-based e-modules there is an increase in HOTS with N-Gain of 62% in the medium category. Testing the effectiveness of the e-module using a paired t-test showed a result of 0.000 which means that the HOTS-based e-module has a significant effect on increasing student HOTS.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills are part of the 21st-century skills that are important for students to have. Critical thinking skills as an asset for students to achieve success in life. The purpose of this study is to describe the critical thinking skills of a state junior high school student in Bogor in learning Science. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The research sample was taken by purposive sampling on the seventh-grade students of a state junior high school in Bogor. The participants were 176 students consisting of 81 boys and 95 girls. The data were collected by giving a multiple-choice test with the open reason, which was developed based on the indicators of the critical thinking skills of Ennis and interviews with a science teacher. The data were processed using Microsoft Office Excel 2013, then analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. The data analysis resulted in as many as 1.70% of students being included in the critical category; 88.64% of students are in the less critical category, and 9.66% are in the far less critical category. It can be concluded that the critical thinking skills of seventh-grade junior high school students in Bogor are still low at an average of 53.07. This proves that students' critical thinking skills still need to be trained further so that they can be improved.
