Abstract

South Sudan, as the world's youngest country that gained independence in 2011, has often been plunged into severe internal conflicts, including civil wars in 2013 and 2016, which left more than 9 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. Although the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) was established to protect civilians and support the peace process, the effectiveness of this mission is often questioned, especially regarding its failure to respond to the violence in Juba in 2016. This study aims to analyze UNMISS's strategy in empowering civil society as part of its peace building efforts, as well as the challenges and implications for sustainable peace, with the hope of providing a more comprehensive insight into the role of civil society in social reconciliation and peace   building, as well as recommendations for international policy in peace missions in other post-conflict countries. This research is qualitative research with a literature study design, which is used to gain an in-depth understanding of the phenomena occurring in the post-conflict context, particularly regarding UNMISS's strategy in empowering civil society and its impact on peace building. A literature study was used to collect, analyze, and evaluate various secondary sources relevant to the research topic, such as scientific articles, UN reports, policy documents, and literature related to peace building and civil society empowerment.   Keywords: Civil society, peace building, sustainable peace, UNMISS

Abstract

Mindanao, Philippines, is now facing a food crisis triggered by hydrometeorological disasters (floods) and limited human resource capacity. Official Philippine government data recorded crop failures on 20,000 hectares of rice fields and 8,800 hectares of staple crops, threatening stability of the local food supply. This study analyzes the role of BIMP-EAGA (Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area) subregional cooperation in crisis mitigation through the triangle economic growth approach. Using qualitative methods and policy analysis, the study examines three main mechanisms: (1) food security corridor as a commodity supply chain stabilizer, (2) farmer HR capacity building program based on agricultural technology transfer, and (3) agricultural infrastructure funding within the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2025 framework. Findings indicate that this collaboration significantly contributes to mitigating the impact of crop failure through regional food reserve schemes and cross-border trade facilities. However, implementation faces challenges due to domestic policy fragmentation and disparities in resource allocation. The study concludes that the effectiveness of BIMP-EAGA depends on the synergy of the economic growth triangle, especially in integrating climate adaptation, local community empowerment, and ASEAN policy harmonization.

Abstract

This community service aims to increase the knowledge and awareness of the residents of Pantai Kunyit, Bandar Lampung City, as active subjects in tsunami disaster mitigation efforts. This coastal area is highly vulnerable, yet it faces major challenges regarding low preparedness, lack of rapid response to early warnings, and an unsustainable mitigation culture. The implementation methods included short interviews for initial knowledge mapping, screening of interactive educational videos on tsunami mechanisms and self-rescue procedures, and quantitative evaluation using pre-test and post-test instruments. This initiative successfully engaged the active participation of residents, community leaders, and local government. The results demonstrated a significant increase in post-test scores compared to pre-test scores, indicating an enhanced public understanding of basic tsunami concepts, natural warning signs, and evacuation routes/shelters. Although community knowledge improved, fostering deeply rooted safety behaviors still requires consistent follow-up and commitment from various stakeholders, including the local government. This program is expected to serve as an initial catalyst to encourage multi-stakeholder collaboration towards creating a resilient and tsunami-prepared community in Pantai Kunyit.

Abstract

Abstract In July 2012, the first Indonesian Diaspora congress was held in Los Angeles, United States. The congress, which was attended by various Diasporas from all over the world, produced the Indonesian Diaspora Declaration which raised enthusiasm to become a developed and prosperous country. Apart from that, from this congress, the Indonesian Diaspora Network Global (IDN Global) was formed. IDN Global was formed at the second congress in Jakarta, August 2013. IDN Global is spread across more than 50 countries, including one of them, the Philippine Chapter of IDN Global or better known as the Indonesia-Filipina Diaspora. By using a descriptive qualitative approach, it is explained that the Indonesia-Filipina Diaspora supports Indonesian and Philippine diplomacy in the fields of economics and trade. Economic diplomacy and trade are important aspects in bilateral relations between Indonesia and the Philippines, where one element that is increasingly being taken into account in strengthening relations between the two countries is the role of the Indonesian diaspora in the Philippines. Currently, the Indonesia-Filipina Diaspora as part of a broader diplomatic strategy is considered to be able to play a role as an actor in multi-track diplomacy. Apart from that, the presence of the Indonesian diaspora in the Philippines can also increase Indonesia's economic growth and contribute to the nation's progress. Abstract

This study examines the role of the creative economy as a nation branding instrument for increasing the competitive advantage of Indonesia within the ASEAN countries. With regard to methodology, a qualitative descriptive research design was chosen based on library research, during which data were selectively collected using purposive sampling from policy and institutional documents from ASEAN and Indonesia, data on particular sectors, scientific articles on creative economy, nation branding, branding management, innovation and regional cooperation. Data were analyzed by thematic analysis and five themes have been considered in this study: Creative assets and competitiveness; Creative products and national identity; Market opportunities within ASEAN; Branding and digitalization; Institutional constraints. It is found out that Indonesian creative economy includes culinary, fashion, crafts, films, music, applications and games, all of which have certain economic and cultural value, contributing to nation branding and competitiveness. However, richness of cultural heritage does not guarantee competitive advantage. To create competitive advantage it is necessary to perform good branding management, innovation of business, access to digital markets, financing and protection of intellectual property. There are opportunities provided by ASEAN cooperation for market growth, cross-border cooperation, exchange of knowledge, innovation and increase of the visibility of Indonesian creative products on a regional level. The study develops an integrated framework that links creative assets, branding management, business innovation and market integration of ASEAN, thus considering creative economy as the link between economic competitiveness and reputation aspect of nation branding. The limitations of the study are related to the use of only secondary data and absence of empirical data at firm and consumer levels.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) in promoting investment in the halal food industry within the economic corridor of Bitung and Mindanao. The research employs a qualitative approach using a comparative case study design, relying on secondary data from policy reports, institutional documents, and academic literature. The findings indicate that SMIIC plays a significant role in enhancing investment by providing internationally recognized halal standards that increase market trust and reduce non-tariff barriers. These standards facilitate cross-border trade and support integration into the global halal value chain. The Bitung–Mindanao corridor shows strong potential due to complementary economic structures, where Bitung functions as a processing and export hub, while Mindanao serves as a key supplier of raw materials. However, challenges such as regulatory fragmentation, limited institutional capacity, and infrastructure gaps continue to hinder optimal investment flows. Overall, SMIIC acts as both a technical and institutional mechanism in shaping halal industry development and regional economic integration.
