Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of assertiveness training and cognitive restructuring on examophobia among Colleges of Education students in Kwara state. The study adopted quasi experimental research design with pretest, posttest, non-randomized and non-equivalent control group of 3x2x2 factorial design. The experimental groups were exposed to assertiveness training and cognitive restructuring treatments while the control group was taught using the lecture method. The instruments used for data collection were Examination Phobia Scale and Adapted Study Habits Inventory while descriptive statistics, and ANCOVA were used to analyze data. The study revealed that cognitive restructuring and assertiveness training were effective techniques for treating examophobia. However, students’ gender and study habits were not determinants in the effectiveness of cognitive restructuring and assertiveness training techniques in treating examophobia. Also, the study found that there was no significant interaction effect of gender, study habits and treatments on examophobia among students. Therefore, the study recommended the establishment of modern student counselling and human development centres in the Colleges of Education.

Abstract

The rapid evolution of AI in education has triggered contentious debates over its ethical use and effects on language learning. This study investigated how English teachers negotiate and appeal to language ideologies and ethical boundaries as they respond to AI tools in English Language Teaching (ELT). Grounded on language ideology and pedagogical technology theories, the research employed narrative inquiry design in examining the Indonesian university lecturers' experiences of language, ethics, and AI-driven classroom practice. Preliminary screening questionnaires and narrative in-depth interviews were used in collecting the data. The findings demonstrate that while AI tools have become valued for efficiency in supplying grammatical correction, lecturers are worried that the reliance on AI might hinder critical thought and emergence of agency. Lecturers also note the inadequacy of AI at engaging the local diversity of languages and dialects, and AI often tends to construct a standardized version of English. The study indicates that AI can be a useful tool in ELT by offering feedback and improving language accuracy, but caution is necessary to maintain academic integrity and ensure meaningful learning. This research contributes to the conversation on AI in education, offering actionable insights on ethical and productive AI use in language teaching.

Abstract

Reading is important for students to enrich knowledge and collect important information useful not only for their academic life but also for their social, economic, and civic life. A good reading habit can be initiated by engaging students with reading materials which arouse their interests. Even if students have good interests and habits in reading, they may face difficulties in reading which may decrease their reading interests and habits. In rural areas in Indonesia, there are many obstacles affecting students’ reading interests and habits. The objective of this study is to investigate English reading interests, habits, and difficulties of West Sumba senior high school students. This study uses a descriptive quantitative approach with a survey design. The results of this study showed that the students have a good interest in reading Indonesian and English texts, and they have a quite good reading habit even though the texts that they read on a daily basis in Indonesian language cannot be categorized as appropriate reading materials. The common difficulties faced by the students in their reading activities are unsupportive parents and teachers, lack of English reading sources, and their preference to watch TV or play with their gadgets rather than to read.

Abstract

This study investigates factors contributing to educational disparities in Indonesia, particularly concerning school location and status. Employing a correlational research design, the study analyzed data from the 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), focusing on the Indonesian school questionnaire dataset. The sample comprised 410 Indonesian schools, including 237 public and 173 private institutions. Pearson's chi-square test was utilized for statistical analysis to examine associations between categorical variables. Findings reveal significant relationships between school location and learning impediments related to teacher availability, physical infrastructure availability and quality, and digital resource availability. These issues are predominantly concentrated in public schools in rural areas, indicating a systematic disadvantage. While some challenges are also present in private schools, the impact is more pronounced in public institutions. The results suggest that educational inequality in Indonesia is structurally reproduced, perpetuating social and economic hierarchies. This necessitates comprehensive policy interventions that address both resource provision and underlying systemic issues.

Abstract

The limited access to traditional Dayak musical instruments, the Dau', drives innovation in music learning in the digital era. This research explores students' perceptions of using cardboard media as a creative alternative in learning the basics of the instrument. Through a qualitative approach, this study found that students responded positively to the cardboard media. Data were collected through participant observation, documentation, and interviews with the 2023 cohort of Performing Arts Education students at Tanjungpura University. Open-ended questions were used to understand how students perceive the cardboard media used in the learning process. Data analysis used triangulation techniques to understand students' opinions regarding the learning media. The research results show that students have a positive view of using cardboard media in the basic music learning of the Dayak. They assess that this media is not only effective in facilitating the understanding of Dayak music concepts but also stimulates creativity and fine motor skills. These findings indicate that cardboard media can be an innovative and flexible solution in traditional music education, especially in resource-limited environments. The implications of this research open up opportunities for further development, such as the integration of augmented reality technology, to create a more immersive and engaging learning experience for the millennial generation.

Abstract

Until recently, the educational curriculum has led to the need for problem-solving through adequate mathematical reasoning. In addition, there is much evidence that problem-solving is achieved through mathematical reasoning. The problem is that primary students' mathematical reasoning is still low. Meanwhile, many empirical studies state that Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) can enhance mathematical reasoning. On the other hand, scaffolding is a solution that helps achieve learning outcomes, including mathematical reasoning. This study examines the impact of RME assisted with scaffolding toward students' mathematical reasoning. The research method was quasi-experimental with a non-equivalent (pre-test and post-test) control-group design. The study sample involved fifth-grade students using a purposive sampling technique. The data analysis used was an independent sample t-test. The study's findings showed that RME assisted with scaffolding, which affected students' mathematical reasoning. Another finding was that students' primary mathematical manipulation as part of mathematical reasoning increased significantly. Therefore, integrating RME and scaffolding can be a new alternative learning strategy to enhance primary students' mathematical reasoning.

Abstract

This article examines the implementation of service learning in theological education to foster theological and transform students' Faith. The primary objective of this research is to explore how service learning can enhance students' understanding of theology while promoting their spiritual and social development. A case study approach was employed at the Pastoral College-IPI Malang, where data was collected through in-depth interviews and participatory observations. The findings indicate that service learning significantly influences students' character, spirituality, and social competence. Students reported a deeper theological understanding, a strengthened commitment to their Faith, and the practical application of Christian values in their daily lives. This study highlights the benefits of integrating service learning into theological education, demonstrating its effectiveness in empowering students' Faith and facilitating their transformation in alignment with their Christian calling. Ultimately, the research underscores the importance of service learning in preparing students to become dedicated servants in society.

Abstract

This study compares metacognitive–discursive activities in Grade-7 mathematics learning in two private Catholic junior high schools in Southwest Sumba, Indonesia: SMPK St. Paulus Karuni (n=14) and SMPK St. Aloysius Weetebula (n=13). A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was used, combining pre–post test results with classroom discourse analysis. Students completed an initial test consisting of 12 mathematics items and 6 logic items, and the same test was administered again after one semester.  Classroom lessons were video-recorded and transcribed; focal segments were analyzed using a metacognitive–discursive activity category system (Karuni: 08:20–15:35; Weetebula: 44:10–51:23). Baseline results indicated similar initial achievement (combined averages 21% at Karuni and 19% at Weetebula), with both cohorts struggling on fraction items, particularly those involving unlike denominators. Discourse coding showed that Karuni displayed a more sustained metacognitive–discursive teaching culture, including more frequent student participation in explaining, justifying, and checking solutions, alongside active peer discussion and limited impact of negative discursive events. In Weetebula, metacognitive moves appeared more teacher-mediated and negative discursive events (e.g., low audibility, fragmented explanations, interruptions) occurred more frequently, reducing clarity of meaning-making. Post-test results aligned with these patterns. Karuni improved to 27% (mathematics) and 66% (logic), yielding a combined average of 34%, whereas Weetebula reached 16% (mathematics) and 36% (logic), with a combined average of 20%. Overall, the findings suggest that sustained student engagement in metacognitive–discursive interaction is associated with stronger learning development over one semester.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the suitability and effectiveness of the implementation of differentiated learning in English subjects, from the following aspects: student identification, learning objectives, socio-cultural, human resources (teachers and students), learning material planning, availability of facilities and infrastructure, utilization of facilities and learning processes, and outcomes after participating in learning. The methodology used was descriptive quantitative with a qualitative approach. The Context, Input, Process, Product (CIPP) evaluation model is used to evaluate it, while data collection was in the form of questionnaires, observations, document reviews, and interviews. The results of the study show the level of suitability and effectiveness of students: 76%, 82%, 77%, and 76%, while non-conformity or ineffectiveness: 24%, 18%, 23%, and 24%. This means that input, process, and output have not been implemented well. Meanwhile, for teachers: 83%, 84%, 86%, 84%, and inappropriate or ineffective: 17%, 16%, 14%, and 16%, which means it has been implemented well. The description above indicates positive results from differentiated learning in English. Teachers stated it was appropriate and effective, while students needed ongoing, specialized support to achieve shared expectations.

Abstract

The learning community in Indonesia is snowballing among teachers. The problem is that only a few teacher-learning communities are consistence and intense in carrying out teacher-learning activities. This study aims to investigate how the learning conditions in online-based teacher-learning communities in Indonesia consistently carry out teacher-learning activities. The research design uses a qualitative approach with the case study method, and the research framework uses a qualitative e-research framework. Various data were obtained through interviews with eight teachers, documentation studies, and observation of teacher learning activities through online-based teacher-learning communities. The results show that some management of learning conditions is required to organize professional learning for teachers through online-based teacher-learning communities. Namely: 1) learning activities are inclusive and sustainable; 2) the characteristics of the learning participants are individuals who have a high initiative to re-learn; 2) the characteristics of learning topics according to the needs and problems of teachers; 3) the characteristics of the speakers are from the teachers themselves (fellow teachers); 4) learning objectives are focused on improving teachers' teaching practice skills; and 5) there is a mapping of learning barriers that are managed during the learning process.
