Abstract

Active learning refers any approach to instruction in which all students are required to involve in the learning process. The purpose of the manuscript is to evaluate the application of active learning in teaching Green Engineering Principles and Applications as a compulsory course in environmental engineering department curriculum, Curtin University Malaysia. Green engineering can be defined as an approach of the design, process, product and commercialization that follow environmentally conscious attitude, principles and values combined with multi-disciplinary engineering science that to minimize pollutant and promote local and global sustainability. Green engineering encompasses the conceptualization and implementation of reducing environmental impacts, maximize energy efficiency and develop the greener processes and product that bring environmental and economic benefit. A simple approach that combining the classical lecture-presentation and active engagement of the students with the course materials through case studies, problem solving and discussion has been developed. In conclusion, introducing the active learning to the students on solving any problems improve the students’ ability in achieving the course outcome and thus the programme outcome of the Department of Environmental Engineering, Curtin University Malaysia.

Abstract

Teachers’ identity formation and tension in their working place have been the concern of many researchers and experts. However, the concern focuses only on the novice teachers who teach in the same subject as they are assigned to be. There is no sufficient research on identity tension which is faced specifically. This paper aims to find out the identity tension experienced by English language graduates teaching BIPA (Indonesian as a Foreign Language). This study employed a case study in order to generate a new understanding of this phenomena more deeply. Interview guideline with a semi-structured type of interview became the main instrument in this study. The participants of this study were five active Indonesian as foreign language teachers of Lembaga Bahasa Universitas Sanata Dharma. The study found out that teachers’ situatedness* became the main issue that influences teachers’ identity, compared to teachers’ multifaceted nature and their college. This study shows that, although the participants have been teaching for more than two years, or more, they mostly considered themselves still as English teachers.

Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate the awareness and utilization of social network for learning among undergraduate students at Al-hikmah University, Ilorin, Nigeria. Gender, technology background, age, level, and area of specialization are the variables involved. The descriptive survey research design was employed to draw responses with the use of self-structured questionnaire. All Al-hikmah university students are the population of the study while the target population are 200 level to 400 level students from which a sample size of 400 undergraduate students was selected via random sampling techniques from six out of seven faculties available. The instrument was validated by experts and the reliability co-efficient using a split-half test was 0.86. Four research questions and one hypothesis were used for the study. Frequency distribution, charts, and t-test were the statistical tools used to analyze the data. The findings indicated that social network is used for educational purposes with improved engagement, better understanding of the subject matter as it helps to reinforce learning with technology because 80.0% of learners were digital native. Despite the benefits, social network can interrupt personal study, distract the conventional classroom learning, loss of privacy and exposure to cybercrimes as indicated by the respondents with 82%, 68%, and 55% respectively. Hence, Tertiary Institutions should organize series of seminars, workshops, conferences to update, enlighten and encourage students and lecturers on the good and not forgetting the not too- good and disadvantages attached with the use of social network as a tool for learning and interaction.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to find out a systematic reviewing of apps for instruction in the context of creative arts in Nigeria Junior Secondary Schools. The study also investigated the influence of gender students’ taught with apps.  The quasi-experimental design, which is of the pre-test and post-test was used.  The research sample was drawn from two randomly selected secondary schools. One intact class in each sampled school was also randomly selected for the study. The students from the sampled class were further stratified along with gender boys and girls. The Learning App, Validated test, and Marking guide were the instruments.  Two hypotheses were tested using Analysis of Covariance and t-test. Findings indicated that students taught with apps performed significantly better than those taught without. It also revealed the gender of students was not a factor in the performance of students when they were taught using apps this was because there was no significant difference between the performance of male and female students. Based on these findings, it was recommended that the use of apps should be encouraged in teaching creativity in Nigeria schools.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the tendency of students with learning disabilities in choosing the field of their vocational education. This study also highlights the perceptions of parents and teachers towards the vocational field chosen by the students. A survey method is used in this study which involves 351 students with learning disabilities, 336 parents, and 248 teachers in the State of Selangor, Malaysia. The findings of the study indicate that there are several constructs namely, realistic, investigative, artistic, social, entrepreneurial, and conventional which determine students with learning disabilities choosing the field of vocational education. Meanwhile, several factors that influence parents' perceptions of their child's choice of vocational education field have been discussed in this study. This study illuminates the phenomena and tendency of difficulties faced by students with learning disabilities in choosing their field of vocational education. In this regards, parents and teachers have an important role in providing support to students with special needs in their learning and vocational choices.

Abstract

Despite the fact that a number of studies have shown a relationship between personality traits (extrovert and introvert) with oral performance in the EFL setting, the link between extrovert and introvert personality, EFL motivational orientations, and speaking achievement is very rare. Therefore, this present study aims to find what differences are truly existed between extrovert and introvert personality regarding to their motivational orientations and speaking achievement, and how extrovert and introvert personality are inter-correlated with EFL motivational orientations and speaking achievement. In order to identify the students’ personality, the researcher used The Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) and Self-Report Questionnaire to identify the students’ motivational orientations. The samples of this study are 40 students in XII grade of Senior High School in East Lampung, Indonesia. The data is further analyzed by using Independent samples T-test and Pearson product moment correlation coefficient. The results show that there is no significant difference between extrovert and introvert personality in both their motivational orientations and speaking achievement. Moreover, it is also found that there is a combination of motivational orientations that co-exists in the extrovert personality. However, both personality traits and motivational orientations are not supposed to be a strong predictor of students’ speaking achievement. Therefore, this present study is largely extended to give a plausible explanation to the field under investigation.
