Abstract

This study explores the burgeoning trend of Islamic attire (pakaian syar'i) among millennials in Indonesia. Employing a multidisciplinary approach involving text analysis and sociological perspectives, the research aims to deeply understand Muslim women's attire within Islamic tradition and its Indonesian context. The analysis begins with scrutinizing hadīths related to standards of Muslim women's clothing and the perspectives of Islamic scholars. Additionally, it uncovers that scholars universally agree on four clothing aspects: looseness, non-transparency, dissimilarity to opposite gender clothing, and covering intimate parts (‘Awrah). Moreover, the research identifies the trend of Islamic attire evolving into a religious commodity. In contemporary society, a clear divide exists between Islamic attire and general Muslim women's clothing. The discourse on Islamic attire has gained prominence, influencing both majorities and minorities. Initially a minority perspective, the Islamic attire label and its associated phenomenon are now a dominant fashion trend, sparking debates and discussions.

Abstract

This study aims to capture the codicological aspects and texts of the ancient Mushaf A. 648 in the collection of the National Library of Indonesia and how the contextualization of these manuscripts is from a historical perspective. In analyzing it, the writer uses a codicological and textological analysis approach. The results showed that Mushaf A 648 in the collection of the National Library of Indonesia was strongly suspected of originating from Aceh. It is not known who copied this manuscript. However, it doesn't seem like an ordinary person. The writing strokes display the art of the beauty of the letters which is quite impressive. In addition, the use of ink in Mushaf A 648 only takes red, black and yellow. For illumination, there is only the beginning and end. The colors red, yellow and black are very dominating with quite detailed and neat processing. The motifs and decorations of Mushaf A. 648 are identical to those of Acehnese decorations. Furthermore, Mushaf A 648 uses 4 tajwid marking systems, namely  ظ ,غنہ ,ادغم ,خ. While the rasm used is dominated by rasm imla'i.

Abstract

This article examines the social literary approach to interpreting the Qur'an. The social literary approach is perceived as a portrayal of the social and cultural milieu surrounding the commentator. Although this approach appears more attuned to society, it transpires that the social literary approach employed by commentators exhibits less affinity towards contemporary culture, traditions, and politics in Indonesia. This is because commentators place greater emphasis on imparting advice and reminders for adhering to Islamic principles. Present-day developments are constrained to conform to classical interpretations, with dissenting interpretations being deemed erroneous. The lack of flexibility, accommodation, and adaptability to local traditions and culture is evident in the interpretation of the Qur'an. The current phenomenon in Indonesia entails endeavors to realize religious moderation to uphold the unity, harmony, and peace of all Indonesian citizens. This pursuit of religious moderation necessitates new interpretations that are adaptable and not rigidly bound to culture and differences. Reconstructing the social literary approach is a necessary measure to achieve this goal. The methodology employed in this article is qualitative-interpretive and draws upon acculturation theory, which underscores cultural diversity. The reconstructed approach outlined in this article advocates for an interpretation of the Qur'an that integrates with culture and tradition, rather than imposing itself upon them. Three key considerations are delineated for actualizing the social literary approach in interpreting the Qur'an: observing phenomena, accounting for spatial and temporal contexts, and prioritizing the public good.

Abstract

This article examines Fred Donner’s argumentation in criticizing the revisionists group in the discourse of Qur’anic studies. By textual and content analysis, this article argues that Fred Donner is of the view that the Qur’an was completed as a corpus at the time of the Prophet Muhammad. Donner’s argument is based on a comparative study between the Qur’an and the corpus that emerged about two centuries after the prophet Muhammad. Among the Islamic sources that became the object of his comparative study were the hadith and prophetic history. Based on his findings, that the Qur’an, in some degree, has different tone of elaboration on the political leadership. While the hadith speaks more about leadership with many terminologies, and even describes the names of companion, the Qur’an is silent on the issue of leadership with little reference on it. This, according to Donner, becomes proof that the Qur’an came before the hadith. And it is also certain that the Qur’an became a fixed corpus during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad. Donner’s argumentation with this method of comparing hadith implies the idea that hadith came later.

Abstract

Ignaz Goldziher's views on hadith have elicited both support and criticism from Muslim scholars. Fuat Sezgin, a prominent Islamic scholar, disputed Goldziher's claim that hadiths narrated by classical scholars were inauthentic due to their reliance on sanad rather than matan criticism. Sezgin contends that the oral tradition of hadith transmission and his identification of some false hadiths in Sahih Bukhari weaken Goldziher's argument. This paper examines the differing perspectives of Ignaz Goldziher and Fuat Sezgin on hadith. Utilizing a literature research approach, it employs a descriptive-analytical method to elucidate the ideas of these two scholars. The research concludes that Goldziher's critique arose from a fundamental misunderstanding, as the narration method he criticized differed from that of classical scholars. Furthermore, the assertion that hadith was not documented in writing until later stages is refuted, as the Companions had recorded it in the Shahifah during the Prophet's time. Goldziher's identification of false hadiths in Bukhari is attributed to his focus on matan, leading him to consider them as fabrications by Bukhari.

Abstract

Differences in the interpretation of Islamic teachings regarding gender interactions often lead to diverse perspectives within society. Some adopt a conservative approach that avoids physical contact and limits social interactions, while others take a more inclusive stance, encouraging respectful interactions between men and women. This study aims to explore these differing perspectives, focusing on the tradition of al-Muṣāfaḥaḥ (handshaking), and seeks a solution for harmonizing these differences in social life. This research employs a qualitative method with content analysis of various secondary sources, such as books, theses, dissertations, and academic journals. The study reveals that conservative views emphasize the importance of maintaining modesty and avoiding potential temptations, while inclusive perspectives focus on the context of interactions and the intentions behind actions. The findings indicate that harmonization between these two views is essential to create a more cohesive society, where gender interactions can align with Islamic values and the demands of modern society. In conclusion, harmonizing these views not only fosters social cohesion but also strengthens ethical values within the community.

Abstract

The replacement of leaders often sparks conflict, involves political funding loss of lives, and enters the list of issues faced. The reinterpretation of Article 169 letter q of Law number 7 of 2017 has become a political dynasty issue in Indonesia. Choosing leaders, which should ideally be a sacred moment and a hope for a better life for society, has unfortunately turned into a moment of contention. As members of the Muslim community, one certainly hopes that the Quran will become the book that provides answers to the challenges of our time. The method employed in this research is qualitative with a library research approach. This study identifies three selection processes: First, Allah chooses leaders directly, as stated in Surah ql-Baqarah verse 30 and Surah Sad verse 26. This selection is the prerogative of Allah, untainted by interference and irrevocable in its decision. Second, leaders are chosen by the Prophet, as mentioned in Surah ql-Baqarah 246-247. Society can consult to delegate authority to the Prophet to appoint a leader among them. This method of selecting leaders is suitable for use in Indonesia, as it minimizes fraud while reducing societal conflicts. Even though there is currently no figure like the Prophet to guide leadership, this role can be represented by the people’s representatives. Third, leaders are chosen by the preceding leader, based on the evidence in Surah Yusuf verses 54-56. The Egyptian King, impressed by Prophet Yusuf’s linguistic abilities, interpretation skills, and wealth management, granted his wish to become the treasurer, as requested by Prophet Yusuf. These verses indicate the characteristics of a competent leader who shoulders responsibilities according to their capacity.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the term al-ittishāl or al-mūashalah, specifically interpreted in Arabic as communication. The study addresses inquiries regarding the essence and existence of communication in the Qur'an from ontological, epistemological, and axiological perspectives. The focus of this study is crucial for analysis as the mainstream perception of communication in society has predominantly concentrated on aspects such as al-qaul, al-khitab, al-kalam, and the like. Employing thematic tafsir methodology, this research analyzes data primarily derived from the Qur'an, its exegesis, and hadith, while relevant books and journal articles serve as secondary sources. The research reveals that the essence of Qur'anic communication through the term al-ittishāl, stemming from the root word washala and its derivatives, recurs 12 times within the Qur'an across various chapters, all of which connote meanings of connection, seeking protection, reaching, and revelation (clarification). Meanwhile, the existence of communication in the Qur'an, from the perspective of the philosophy of science, is categorized into three aspects. Firstly, the ontological dimension of communication in the Qur'an is evident in the term yashilūna, signifying 'connected, linked, and reaching.' Secondly, the epistemological aspect of communication is depicted through its various forms within the Qur'an, encompassing verbal and non-verbal expressions, whether direct or indirect, unidirectional, or bidirectional. Thirdly, the axiological aspect of Qur'anic communication is discernible in its intended purpose or benefits, aiming for human understanding of the conveyed instructions and demonstrating the power of Allah.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to conduct a partial and simultaneous analysis of the hadith on the prohibition of electing incompetent leaders. The scope of this research is the main hadith narrated by Abu Dzar. which was takhrij by Imam Muslim. Data relating to hadiths and the quality of each narrator is collected using documentation methods. This type of research is qualitative and data analysis uses content analysis methods. Based on partial analysis, it is found that this hadith is of authentic quality, because (1) All the narrators have the degree of thiqah . (2) Sanad hadith continues. (3) This matan hadith does not contain syadz , because there is no contradiction found with the naqli proposition, namely the Al-Qur'an and Hadith which have a higher sanad quality. (4) This hadith matan does not contain 'illat , because there is no contradiction found with the aqli proposition, namely with common sense, the senses or science. Based on simultaneous analysis; This hadith has 2 tabi ' hadiths. However, because in terms of quality the hadith already has authentic quality, the existence of this tabi'nya hadith has no effect in improving its quality. As for his martyrdom, apparently 6 hadiths of martyrdom were found, this means that the hadiths were narrated by six Companions, namely: Abu Dzar, Abu Hurairah, Auf bin Malik, Zaid bin Thabit, Abu Musa and Abdurrahman bin Samurah.
