Ellipsis is an omitting part of the sentence that may occur in the English novel. Some authors write a novel tend to use ellipsis in their work. Learners who read English novel are likely to find the author’s writing style which study is aimed to explain the types of the elliptical sentence used by the author in the novel The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner. This research applied a qualitative method and employed a source of data from Stephenie Meyer’s Novel and some references to support this study. A further technique of analyzing data in this research is always linked to the theory and methods based on Syntactic Analysis. Subsequently, this research uses the syntactic analysis form, Noam Chomsky. As a result, the researcher found that there are three types of elliptical sentence occurred in the novel. The types of elliptical sentence are a nominal ellipsis, verbal ellipsis, and clausal ellipsis. Therefore, based on the research findings, the researcher concludes that the types of ellipsis the author used in her novel based on the evidence are verbal ellipsis, nominal ellipsis, and clausal ellipsis. Lexicon plays a fundamental role in translation. A good and acceptable translation should successfully render the message of source language into target language by selecting appropriate lexicon. The incorrectly lexical choice will distort the message of the source language. This paper investigates the lexical errors found in the translation of Indonesian text into English text made by the fifth-semester students. The data collection was conducted by administering a translation test to the respondents of 30 students. The data were analyzed using error analysis method following 5 steps: elicitation, registering, identifying, categorizing, and evaluating. The analysis and interpretation found that the lexical distortions can be categorized into: omission, overinclusion, misselection, disordering, and blending. Misselection is found to be the most dominant error followed respectively by omission, misordering, overinclusion, and blending. The findings show that the main problem of the translation is the wrong selection of lexicon and can contribute to the evaluation teaching-learning process either theoretically or practically. As a result, the improvement of students’ translation quality requires students to practice more and more. In addition, the teaching of translation should be focused primarily on the selection of lexicon.

This paper (1) explores learners’ initial perceptions of English, and (2) explains the development of the perceptions before coming to Kampung Inggris. This paper is based on ethnographic research using interpretivism as a paradigm to understand the learners’ perceptions. The research site was Kampung Inggris TulungRejo village, Pare, Kediri, East Java. The participants were the students in the village. The data were collected through interview. The data were analyzed using iterative model from Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2013). In this model, data condensation, data display and conclusion drawing/verification were used to analyze the data. In the data analysis process, multiple coding and categorizations were used to figure out patterns. The theoretical framework was used in data interpretation. This study found out that (1) the learners’ initial perception on English varied according to their experiences. Most of the perceptions before coming to Kampung Inggris were negative. These perception were affected by the learners’ learning process, the environment and the surrounding people. In the learners’ reality, English was viewed merely on its intrinsic feature. (2) The learners’ perception was developed due to their life experiences. After experiencing some turning points, they believed that English was important for their lives. This change of perception also changed their attitude and became their motivations in learning English in Kampung Inggris.

The study aimed at investigating Senior High School English teachers’ views on the drawbacks and the strengths of the employement of Multicple Choice Question as a summative assessment. Rooting within qualitative research paradigm, the current study employed descriptive qualitative design. The data were collected through in-depth interview with three experienced EFL teachers of a prominent state senior high school in Banjar, West Java. The results of the interview indicated that there are three strengths in using Multiple-Choice Question (MCQ) as a summative assessment. These strengths included teachers’ view that MCQ could result in quick and easy scoring, facilitate the assessment of varied language skills and encourage the students to answer the question carefully. Additionally, there were three drwabacks in using MCQ as a summative assessment such as teachers’ view that MCQ could only facilitate on low order of critical thinking, have low positive washback and require a lot of time in its designing phase. Interestingly, two out of three participants thought that MCQ has been a mandatory type of summative assessment suggested by the government. However, in fact, there has been no government policy which recommend certain type of summative assessment. Therefore, looking at the strengths and drawbacks of the use of MCQ could help to be better informed before deciding to use MCQ as a summative assessment.
