Abstract

This study investigates the use of the Indonesian language as language use and instruction in English teaching for Non-EFL students in ITB AAS Indonesia. This research is descriptive qualitative. The result analysis shows that Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) is a language used and instruction used by an English lecturer. English lecturer uses Indonesian in explaining and emphasizing English materials of grammar/tenses to their students. 2) English lecturer uses Indonesian in instructing the students about giving tasks and preparing for the test. An English lecturer usually uses a mixture of two languages, for example, Indonesian and English because the students are not from the English department, but they are mostly from non-English majors. She has considered using Indonesian based on the conditions and requests of students. Besides, She also translates from Indonesian to English and vice versa during English teaching, so the students can understand what is being said. English can be an international language used and instructed in class, so students will have the opportunity to increase their English skills. However, it is also possible that students struggle to comprehend English said by their lecturers. Besides, the usage of Indonesian in English teaching is used by the lecturer for Non-EFL students to overcome challenges in their learning. The use of Indonesian in the English classroom is beneficial to the teaching-learning process, provided that it is not overused and does not become habitual. When the students are taught only in Indonesian fully, they cannot use and master English. This issue necessitates a flexible approach to language use while instructing students in an English classroom. For instance, the use of Indonesian is restricted to the instruction of specific topics, such as grammar and vocabulary, while the use of English is restricted to the instruction of particular subject skills, such as pronunciation.

Abstract

This study determined the extent of participation of Grade 11 students at Mariano Marcos State University-Laboratory High School in their online English class through Padlet. Twenty-five Grade-11 students and one cooperating teacher were involved in this study. A checklist adapted from Jang (2010) was modified in order to fit to the study. In addition, observation and unstructured interview with the respondents were also conducted to validate the quantitative findings of the study. The quantitative data gathered were treated and analyzed using statistical tools such as frequency and mean while the qualitative data were analyzed and interpreted. Prior to the integration of Padlet, an observation was conducted and a pre-survey checklist was provided for the respondents to accomplish. Padlet was integrated during the demonstration teaching of the student-teacher researchers particularly during the opening motivational activity of their class. After employing Padlet in each of their three sessions, an interview was also conducted with the teacher and selected respondents to supplement the quantitative data of the study. Result showed that before integrating Padlet during online synchronous class, the mean score of the respondents is 3.23 or sometimes while after employing Padlet it was 3.63 or often. This result led to a significant impact on the extent of students’ participation and involvement in class compared to their previous performance during their online classes where PowerPoint Presentation was used as the instructional material. Thus, it is recommended for teachers to adapt and employ digital learning tools like Padlet that provide students various and creative ways to participate and be more involved during online synchronous classes.

Abstract

Although it seems straightforward, using conjunctions in recount text writing poses a serious challenge for Indonesian EFL learners who continue to use them incorrectly. This current research aims to identify and describe EFL learners’ types and causes of conjunction errors in writing recount texts. This research relays on a mixed-methods research design where 27 participants were 10th-grade EFL learners of SMK Muhammadiyah Berbah in the 2022/2023 academic year. Data were collected through documents and interviews. The collected data were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Qualitative analysis was used to discover EFL learners' types and causes of conjunction errors in writing recount text. In contrast, quantitative analysis was used to present the number and percentage of EFL learners' errors. This research shows that EFL learners make four types of errors in using conjunctions to write recount text. The types of errors consist of 55.81% omission errors, 23.25% unnecessary addition errors, 18.60% misuse errors, and 2.32% repetition errors. Ignorance of rule restrictions causes EFL learners to make errors of misuse, unnecessary addition, and excessive repetition. Meanwhile, the incomplete application of the rules caused EFL learners to make omission errors.
