Abstract

The current scenario in the public sphere sees women's presence, yet certain professions, including journalism, remain primarily dominated by men. This gender disparity not only affects media policies but also perpetuates stereotypes hindering women's advancement in the industry, thus becoming a subject of interest for the researchers focusing on Surabaya's media landscape. This study aims to analyse the portrait of women in the media by focusing on female journalists in Surabaya, Indonesia. This research used critical ethnography and standpoint theory as a foundation for analysing the phenomenon. Based on the results of the researcher's search, the number of female journalists in Surabaya is at most 30% compared to male journalists. This research uses critical ethnography and standpoint theory, which are used as a foundation to analyse the phenomenon. Based on the results of the researcher's search, the number of female journalists in Surabaya is at most 30% compared to male journalists. The results of this study show clearly that society's norms and stereotypes about gender that do not prioritise female journalists are the cause of discrimination. In fact, this discrimination often occurs unintentionally due to factors in the organisational structure and environment that do not support the inclusion of women. This leads to poor representation of women in the media until there is an endless cycle of the system.

Abstract

The transformational educational leadership approach that inspires and motivates teams to achieve extraordinary results is not devoid of any challenges. Educational leaders must be progressive in innovation, inclusiveness, and adaptation to the changing times. They must skilfully communicate emerging challenges to help teams in the educational environment. Perception differences lead to conflicts, thus impacting team communication and collaboration, which in turn affects the achievement of organisational or institution’s goals. This study aims to determine the role of interpersonal communication skills in progressive educational leadership and outline the patterns of interpersonal communication associated in progressive educational leadership. Through the use of narrative literature review methods, these studies show that educational leadership must be progressive in facing the challenges of changing times, and the need for interpersonal communication skills to make this happen. Interpersonal communication is an important element in progressive educational leadership. Many scholarly sources have been reviewed and analysed to support these findings. The study identifies key interpersonal communication skills in progressive educational leadership, such as active listening, clear messaging, empathy, respect for diversity, team collaboration facilitation, effective feedback provision, evidence-based communication, conflict resolution, and the ability to inspire and motivate staff and students. In addition to providing a comprehensive overview of interpersonal communication in progressive educational leadership.

Abstract

This article aims to analyse new advocacy model pioneered by young activist Greta Thunberg and its possible applications for Indonesia. Margareth E. Keck and Kathryn Sikkink's theoretical approaches is used in this study to include advocacy strategies incorporating information politics, symbolic politics, leverage politics, and accountability politics. The study uses a qualitative method, specifically utilising a literature review approach. Data visualisation and analysis were conducted using the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and NVivo 12 software. Findings of this study show that Greta's new advocacy model effectively grabs the attention of young people and encourages them to take part in advocacy initiatives. It also highlights the need of environmental ethics as the foundation for advocacy initiatives. Indonesian teenagers lack knowledge to be pioneers because they do not grasp environmental ethics, which is crucial for environmental campaign. This article offers a new approach to the environmental movement in Indonesia, based on environmental ethics being led by young people.

Abstract

The Hajat Lembur is a yearly ritual by Batu Lonceng Villagers, in West Bandung-Indonesia, following the 1956 landslide disaster that occurred in the Lembang Fault area. A series of local wisdom emerged as important messages tucked into the procession that are related to the ritual communication concept. Based on the three interrelated terms of ritual communication: communication, communion, and commonality (Couldry,2003), this research seeks to reveal the meaning of the Hajat Lembur tradition as disaster risk reduction literacy. This research uses a case study approach, conducted by participatory observation in the Hajat Lembur ritual procession in 2023; in-depth interviews with two informants, in the form of opinion leaders who play a central role in the ritual procession; and literature reviews. The results showed that in terms of communication, the Hajat Lembur tradition is interpreted as a transcendent medium about the importance of maintaining harmonisation between humans, nature, and the Creator. In terms of communion, it is a celebration of the sacred Batu Wahyu that led to an agreement to establish a sacred forest, as an area that must be preserved. In terms of commonality, this ritual is a joint expression of the Batu Lonceng Village community about the importance of protecting nature and the environment inherited by the ancestors. Although there is a need for more established local knowledge in this area, this research contributes to the future of disaster mitigation management by emphasising rationality and local wisdom in dealing with natural disasters.

Abstract

This research aims to understand and evaluate the climate of neo-racism in Indonesia, focusing on discriminatory experiences within a heterogeneous society. The study employs a qualitative and content analysis approach, utilising 7.097 tweets about racism as primary data and a literature review as secondary data. In the analysis process, the researchers used Netlytic software to identify patterns or trends of racism on Twitter. The obtained data were then reconstructed to ensure validity. Subsequently, the data were reduced, presented, and concluded to identify the racism climate on Twitter accurately. The findings of this study reveal that the dynamics of neo-racism on Twitter reflect deep-seated issues regarding society's understanding of racism. In Indonesia, the legacy of colonialism and identity politics exacerbates this situation, while regulations and law enforcement remain ineffective in addressing this issue. Analysis of netizens' interactions shows that much content focuses on accusations and validation without concrete solutions. Therefore, comprehensive efforts involving robust regulation, social media ethics education, and cooperation between the government, social media platforms, and the community are necessary. These efforts aim to create an inclusive environment that respects diversity, while also building collective awareness of the importance of tolerance and eliminating discrimination.

Abstract

‘Mediamorphosis’ is a transformation of communication media caused by complex interactions between perceived needs, competitive and political pressures, and social and technological innovation. The digital revolution that gave birth to media digitalisation is one of the causes of mediamorphosis. Another thing that drives mediamorphosis is the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic that hit Indonesia and other countries in the world. Mediamorphosis is a concept used in this study because it refers to the form of radio broadcasts that have changed and adapted due to the novel COVID-19 virus throughout the world and in Indonesia. The main social regulations by the Indonesian Government have implications for radio broadcasting operations. This study aims to see how local private radio– Radio Elisa FM carries out mediamorphosis which is analysed more specifically using the concept of convergence. The research paradigm used is constructivism with a qualitative approach and case study method. The results of the study show that the mediamorphosis carried out by Radio Elisa produces a new face for Radio Elisa broadcasts as a visual radio in the new normal era.
