Abstract

Game is one of learning tools in early education for any children. My Costume is a game to stimule visual-spacial intellegence of children with autism. This tool is constructed from Research and Development (R&D) study which utilizes the theories of M. Alessi Stephen R. Stanley Trollip (development theory) and Howard Gardner (early education curricullum for children with autism). The stages of the research as follows: analysis, design and development. The development is conducted after obtaining validation from material/content expert, media specialist and limited experimental research. The research shows that the product of My Costume in general is appropriate to stimulate visual-spacial intellegence of children with autism in early education context. This is based on the of alpha tests from content expert is 4,6 (very good), alpha test from media specialist is 4,2 (good) whereas beta test obtains 4,27 (very good) and the final result is 4,06 (good). Pre-test visual-spacial intellegence assesment score is 2,18 (poor) and post-test is 3,45 (good). Nevertheless, we can conclude that the product of My Costume is very appopriate to be a visual-spacial learning tool for children with autism.

Abstract

The research purposes to (1) produce atomic model tactual props and material guidance of atomic model for blind student on eight grade, (2) know quality of atomic model tactual props and material guidance of atomic model for blind student on eight grade, (3) know student response toward atomic model tactual props and material guidance of atomic model for blind student on eight grade. This is a developmental research based on a procedural model. The development procedure is based on the development research procedure by Puslitjaknov Team that is adapted from Borg and Gallresearch procedure with development steps such as (1) doing product analysis that will be developed, (2) developing preliminary product, (3) experts validation and revision, (4) small scale field test and product revision, and (5) large scale field and final product. Collecting data technique by a non test research instruments are developed by such as validation sheet, appraisal sheet and student response. The analyzing data technique is done by changing the quantitative data into qualitative data. This research produced an atomic model tactual props and material guidance for blind student on eight grade. Based on the appraisal of media expert, material expert, teacher, atomic and students this prop has a very good quality.

Abstract

This study was inspired by a project in the United States called “accessible congregation”, a project that promotes accessibility in the places of worshsip. While idea of “accessible congregation” is not less known in Indonesia, it is important to study how accessible are Indonesian mosques. Modifying what are considered to be more relevant indicators of accessibility for mosques in Indonesia, this researh studies four main mosques in Yogyakarta. This study found that most mosques are not acceessible and one mosque are less accessible, meaning that no mosque in Yogyakarta are fully accessible.1

Abstract

Blind students have restrictiveness on their sight so it is difficult for them to know solar system concepts which demand a visual role actively. Based on this reality, the innovation of solar system props that was designed specifically for blind students is needed. This research purposes are: (1) developing solar system props as a physics learning media for students of SLB-A YAAT on 9th grade, (2) knowing the quality of solar system props as a physics learning media, (3) knowing the quality of solar system material recording as a physics learning media, and (4) knowing blind students response toward solar system props and material recording as a learning media for solar system material. This research is R & D with 4-D model according to Thiagarajan, Semmel, and Semmel that was confined to extent test in Develop step. The research was done in SLB-A YAAT Klaten. Testing subject on this research are 3 students of 9th grade on limit test and 4 students of 9th grade on extent test. Instrument of data collection in this research are instrument and product validation sheet, product quality appraisal sheet for material expert, media expert, and SLB-A YAAT physics teacher by using Likert scale in checklist. Instrument for students is students response questionnaire by using Guttman scale in checklist. Analyzing data technique that was used in this research is descriptive quantitative.Based on appraisal of media expert, the props and material recording have Very Good quality with percentage 87,50% and 86,67%.Whereas appraisal of material expert has Very Good quality with percentage 87,50% and 82,35%. Appraisal of SLB-A YAAT physics teacher has Very Good quality with percentage 90,27% and 81,52%. The result of students response on limit test for the props and material recording are Very Good with percentage 95,24% and 100%. On extent test, the response is Very Good with percentage 92,86% and 100%.

Abstract

Accessibility is a very pivotal discourse for people with dissabilities as it encourages their equal participation and independence in the society. Accessibility, in this paper, is divided into 2 (two) kinds, which are physical and nonphysical one. The physical accessibility refers to accesibilty in the relations with buildings and environment whereas the nonphysical one corresponds to communication, information and technology. This paper also reveals testimony from various activists of DPOs (disabled people organizations). The data presented here was collected in 2012 through qualitative study in DIY (Yogyakarta Special Province). The paper concludes that eventhough Indonesia has been enacted regulations on accessibilty to people with disabilities, its implementation is ineffectice and discrimination still occurs to the population.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to describe some learning strategies and difficulties faced by visually impaired students (VIS) in learning English at UIN Sunan Kalijaga and to describe some strategies of the lecturer in dealing with difficulties in English teaching and learning process for VIS at UIN Sunan Kalijaga. The type of research is descriptive qualitative research in the form of case study. In this research, the researcher used two instruments. They are observation and interview. There are three subjects involved in this research. They are two blind students and one low vision students. The observation was done when the researcher did teaching and learning process at Class Dakwah R. The data were taken from observation and interview. The researcher used the data to analyze the VIS’ difficulties in learning English. The result shows that there are some difficulties faced by VIS. These difficulties can be put into two different categories: internal and external difficulties. Internal difficulties come from the VIS themselves which relates to VIS’ sight conditions and their learning strategies. External difficulties come from the learning environment including difficulties from the lecturer, friends, materials and the facilities.VIS have different learning strategies. The lecturer should discuss some classroom adaptations such as seating arrangement, friends’ assistance and peer teaching, adapted facilities and exam accommodation, for instance exam assistance, longer exam time, inclusive examination and larger print for low vision students. Finally, the lecturer should choose appropriate teaching strategies, media and teaching aids.

Abstract

This study aimed to compare the achievement, motivation, and independent learning of blind students who use screen reader JAWS and braille module. This research was conducted at MAN Maguwoharjo Yogyakarta involving 5 blind students in the chemistry subject of academic year 2013/2014. One student is as an instrument validation test subject, two students as subjects in the experimental class and two students as subjects in the control class. The instruments used in this study are the observation sheet, multiple choice test, questionnaire responses, motivation scale, and independent learning scale. Data of student achievement, motivation and independence scale were analyzed using nonparametric statistical test of independent samples. The result shows that no significant difference between the achievement, motivation, and independence of blind students who use screen reader JAWS module and braille module.

Abstract

This study focuses on identifying the problems faced by visually impaired students in teaching-learning  process of English syntax course at Faculty of Humanities, Dian Nuswantoro University in 2014. English syntax, as one of the subjects studied in the English study program, is considered as a challenging subject for visually impaired students as it involves visual perception, such as graphics and images. This research was a descriptive qualitative one. The researchers collected the data by using an in-depth interview. This involved 2 visually impaired students who experienced the learning process of English syntax and 3 lecturers of Dian Nuswantoro University. The discussion was limited on the issues around the needs for creating an accessible learning media and kinds of difficulties faced by the visually impaired students. From the in-depth interview, there are three major findings that are highlighted: a) the needs to overcome all inaccessible English syntax learning materials; b) general difficulties faced by visually impaired students in English syntax subject; c) technical difficulties in drawing tree structure diagrams. Then, these highlighted problems and findings are used as to formulate the recommendations of this study.
