Abstract

Observation of coastal shoreline changes in the Subang District was conducted using Digital Shoreline Analysis System Program based on the satellite images of Landsat TM from 1996 to 2010. The purpose of this study was to determine the distance of shoreline change and the zoning area in the Coastal of Subang District. Methods used in this study were images processing and field survey. The results of the study indicated the presence of shoreline changes which experienced maximum accretion and abrasion of more than 1 km between 1996 to 2010. The results of regression analysis between time and accretion as well as time and abrasion showed positive correlation. More than 50% the coastal area of Kabupaten Subang was in severely damaged condition. Coastal shoreline change in Kabupaten Subang occurred mainly due to the developmental activities such as residential construction, coastal mangrove conversion to ponds and rice paddies and sediment transport from the river around Kabupaten Subang. Keywords: shoreline change, Subang District, satellite images, accretion, abrasion.

Abstract

A simple culture system ‘common garden’ has been set up in Institute of Environmental and Marine Science (IEMS) Dumaguete City Philippines (N 09° 19' 52.8" and E 123° 18' 34.1") at the running seawater outdoor experiment tank aimed to monitor the variation of shoot density, leaf morphology and growth rates of marine plant genus Halodule.  The mean shoot densities of Halodule pinifolia were varied and tend to decrease after the three month period of common garden.   Using one-way ANOVA tests, significant differences were detected on the comparison among the months of common garden (F=6.400; p=0.005), mean leaf growth rate (mm/day) of H. pinifolia (F=13.510; p=0.000), and the mean leaf widths from Siquijor (F=9.274; p=0.001) among the three month period of common garden.  Meanwhile, there were no significant differences detected on leaf width (mm) of H. pinifolia origin from Bantayan site, on mean leaf widths of H. uninervis from Bantayan, on mean leaf widths of H. uninervis from Banilad, and on mean leaf growth rate (mm) of H. uninervis among the three month period of common garden.  The result suggests that the ‘common garden’ procedure could have possibly given a clearer pattern of genus Halodule leaf width, shoot density, and growth rate if the could be prolonged.  It could also be suggested that an adequate number of shoot density on the initial procedure for ‘common garden’ should be properly determined.  This is to avoid overcrowding of the samples later, when growth rate will tend to increase without compromising the leaf width and shoot density measurements. Keywords: common garden, seagrasses, shoot density, leaf width, growth rate, Halodule pinifolia, Halodule uninervis.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to describe temperature and salinity distribution in Manado Bay, North Sulawesi.  The vertical measurements of temperature and salinity were done at eight locations in the bay.  The vertical profiles of temperature and salinity shows the existence of water column stratification.  Horizontally, temperature and salinity contours of the surface layer have two pools, i.e. a pool of high temperature but low salinity in the eastern part of the bay and a pool of low temperature but high salinity in the western part of bay.  In a deeper layer, the contours of temperature and salinity tend to be parallel to eastern coastline. Keywords: temperature, salinity, river discharge, Manado Bay.

Abstract

Sponges have a potential to produce bioactive compounds. Their ability to do it since there is a symbiotic relationship with microorganisms in these bacteria. Because of this critical role, the bacteria symbiotic with sponge allegedly have great potential in terms of producing bioactive compounds that have been isolated from sponges (Lee, et al, 2001). In this study, using bacterial culture preparations isolated from the sponge, Acanthostrongylophora sp., the bacterial isolates were tested for their antibacterial activities using a well diffusion test. Based on the antibacterial activity test, the bacterial isolates known as BPO (shaped wavy white dots) and BPB (white threadlike have a certain type of thread) had antibacterial activity. ODS had a broad spectrum as potent against all three types of tested bacteria (Vibrio cholerae, Staphyloccocus aureus, Bacillus subtillis).

Abstract

Kata kunci: Reef ball, karang batu, ikan karang Distribution of Coral Reefs and Fish in Buyat Bay Area Reef Ball Southeast Minahasa Regency The placement of reef ball in Buyat Bay and surrounding areas have been carried out since 1999 by PT. Newmont Minahasa Raya. The goal of this placement was to build a habitat for many biota associated with reef thus may improve economically important fish populations. The presence of reef fish on the reef ball is indispensable ecologically and economically. Furthermore, the degradation of reefs might cause the disappearance of economic value of goods and services, as well as the disappearance of food security and employment for coastal communities, who generally live in poverty. Overall, the composition of fish species found in the reef ball consists of 19 families, 34 genera, 50 species and 290 individuals, the highest inhabited by species of the family Mullidae. As time went by and the increase of reef ball age, some species seem have settled down such as Lutjanus kasmira, and several species of the Acanthuridae family. In addition, the presence of reef ball helps the formation of a new coral reef ecosystem and increase the fertility of waters, therefore enhancing the presence of reef fish composition, which might increases the income of fishermen. Keywords: Reef ball, coral reef, reef fish
