Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of gingivitis among pregnant women attending ante-natal clinic in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) KanoMaterial and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving pregnant women attending antenatal clinic at AKTH. A convenience sampling technique was used to recruit consenting pregnant women who were continuously enrolled until the calculated sample size was reached. A structured, interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to obtain the socio-demographic and other relevant data. An intraoral examination was performed by the researcher to assess their oral and gingival health status. Results: A total of 350 respondents out of the 376 approached participated in the study giving a response rate of 93.1%. A prevalence rate of gingivitis recorded was 82.3%.Conclusion: Gingivitis is highly prevalent among the pregnant women studied with no significant association between oral hygiene aids used and oral hygiene status. However, there was significant association between oral hygiene status and gingival status.

Abstract

Objective: To determine the effect of Low Intensity Pulse Ultrasound (LIPUS) on the neutrophil function and epithelial thickness after skin excision in diabetes mellitus type 2 rats’ model (an Immunohistochemistry Study on Matrix Metalloproteinase-9).Material and Methods: Thirty-six Sprague dawley rats were divided into six groups: DM2, DM4, DM7, DML2, DML4, and DML7, each of which consist of 6 rats. Rats that matched the inclusion criteria were made into diabetes mellitus type 2 by injecting Nicotinamide and Streptozotocin. In all rat’s excision wound was made with punch biopsy in the back area. DML group received LIPUS therapy in the wound area (frequency: 3 MHz, intensity: 0.5 W/cm2, duty cycle: 20%, duration: 3 minutes every day) for two days (DML2), four days (DML4) and seven days (DML7). In the wound tissue an immunohistochemical examination was performed with Polyclonal Antibody MMP-9 to observe MMP-9 expression and and Periodic Acid-Schiff staining to observe epithelial thickness.Results: Two-Way ANOVA and Post-Hoc LSD test showed lower level of MMP-9 expressions in the DML group than in the DM group, whereas the epithelial thickness in the DML group was found higher than in the DM group. The Pearson test showed a correlation between the level of MMP-9 expressions and epithelial thickness (p=0.000; r=-0.785).Conclusion: LIPUS therapy reduced MMP-9 expression and increases epithelial thickness.

Abstract

Objective: To determine of artificial teeth color discoloration different between exposure of cigarette’s and electric cigarette’s smoke in the Laboratorium FKG UMI 2017. The simulator of smoking, artificial teeth, cigarette’s, CIE Lab.Material and Methods: Acrylic is most commonly used material for articial teeth. Acrylic is easily stained by food, beverage, chemical, and smoking habit. Cigarette and electric cigarette are commonly consumed by most people. Cigarette contains brownish substance called tar meanwhile electric cigarette contains of many chemical substances.Results: Data were recorded after exposure of cirarettes’s and analyzed by statistic test used Independent sampe T test whit the significance level ? = 0.05. Cigarette smoke affects the color of acrylic artificial teeth. Meanwhile, electric cigarette effect the color of acrylic teeth but insignificantly. There are artifisial teeth color discoloration different between exposure of cigarette’s and electric cigarette’s smoke with p=0.010 < ?=0.05.Conclusion: This study shows that there is a discoloration difference between acrylic artificial teeth exposed to filter- and electronic-cigarette smoke

Abstract

Objective: The aim of analyze and improve the service innovation at Hasanuddin University Dental and Oral Hospital through the use of the knowledge management system.Material and Methods: The instrument used in data collection was a questionnaire. There are two variables in this study, namely the independent variable is knowledge generation, knowledge storage, knowledge diffusion, knowledge application and the dependent variable is service innovation.Results: An effect knowledge generation on increasing service innovation (p = 0.000) with an R coefficient value square of 0.392, there was an effect of knowledge storage on increasing service innovation. (p = 0.000) with an R coefficient value square of 0.285 there is an effect of knowledge diffusion on increasing service innovation (p = 0.000) with an R coefficient value of 0.374, and there is an effect of knowledge application on increasing service innovation (p=0.000) with an R coefficient value. amounting to 0.176. It is recommended that the hospital management pay attention to and optimize the knowledge application at the Hasanuddin University Dental and Oral Hospital.Conclusion: This study is that there is an effect of knowledge generation, knowledge storage, knowledge diffusion, and knowledge application on improving service innovation at Dental Hospital Hasanuddin University.

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a difference in the width of the maxillary sinus between male and female students of the Minang ethnic group, Faculty of Dentistry, Baiturrahmah University, seen from panoramic radiographs.Material and Methods: This study is an analytical study with a sample size of 50 respondents using purposive sampling method. The data analysis is displayed using the frequency distribution table and the significance level using the SPSS program with the independent t-test.Results: The results showed that the mean value of the width of the right maxillary sinus in men was 35.06 mm (CI 1.7381 ± 6.4219), while in women it was 30.98 mm (CI 1.7378 ± 6. 4232). The mean value of the left maxillary sinus width in men was 35.38 mm (CI 2.6736 ± 6.6464), while in women it was 30.72 mm (CI 2.6732 ± 6.6469).Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that there is a significant difference between the width of the maxillary sinuses of men and women in Minang ethnic students, Faculty of Dentistry Baiturrahmah University with a p value <0.05.

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this research was to determine the effectiveness of the use of plastic wrapping on dental unit work desks on the number of bacterial colonies in Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Faculty of Dentistry USU.Material and Methods: In this study, sampling was carried out on tooth extraction patients in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department by using 2 dental chair units where one of the dental unit work desks used plastic wrap and the other did not. Then examination of the number of bacterial colonies was carried out in Microbiology Laboratory, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science USU.Results: Samples taken as many as 50 samples (25 pre-test samples and 25 post-test samples) in 5 different days showed a significant difference in the number of bacterial colonies (p<0.05).Conclusion: This study showed that there was a significant decrease in the number of bacterial colonies in the dental unit work desks that used plastic wrap compared to those that do not.

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of writing this case report and literature review is to discuss the management of therapy in covid-19 patient with odontogenic abscess in the maxillofacial area.Method: A 65-year-old male patient came to the Ibnu Sina Makassar Hospital, complaining of swelling of the right submandibular blood extending to the buccal, sublingual, submental, and temporal. Patient was in a limp condition, shortness of breath (dyspnea), coughing, difficulty opening his mouth, difficulty eating and swallowing with pulse 121 times / minute, breathing 32 times / minute, and oxygen saturation of 94% (simple mask of 5 lpm). Patient was diagnosed with the right submandibular abscess extending to the right buccal, right temporal, right and left sublingual, and submental with sepsis due to gangrene of tooth root 46. Surgical incision and drainage of the abscess was performed under general anesthesia.Results: Incision and drainage of the abscess in the patient was carried out even with the suspicion that the patient was indicated as having been exposed to covid-19 by following the principle of preventing covid-19 infection.Conclusion: Surgical preparation, appropriate therapeutic management, and proper use of PPE will help provide the best service to patients while protecting medical personnel in the current Covid-19 pandemic era.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to determine the difference in oral hygiene status in patients with cleft lip and palate pre operative and post operative in takalar regency. The sample in this study were patients with cleft lip and palate preoperative and postoperative with a total sample of 20 people consisting of 10 people for the preoperative group and 10 people for the postoperative group.Material and Methods: This study is observational analytic and the design of this study is Cross Sectional Study. Determination of samples was done by quota sampling. Assessment of oral hygiene status was obtained from OHI-S scores. The data obtained were tested with chi-square test and t-test by SPSS.Results: In the group of patients with cleft lip and palate preoperative had an average oral hygiene status of 2.69 while the postoperative group was 2.04 with p-value of 0.062 (> 0.05). Conclusion: There was no difference in the status of oral hygiene in patients with cleft lip and palate preoperative and postoperative in Takalar regency.

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the cytotoxicity of 5% ethanol extracts of Moringa oleifera leaf based on the percentage of fibroblast cell life after exposure to 5% ethanol extracts of Moringa oleifera leaf.Material and Methods: This study was an experimental laboratory with posttest only control group design. The extract was macerated using ethanol. Toxicity tested using the MTT Assay method. The fibroblast cells distributed in 96 well microplate were divided into 5 treatment groups. Group I as a negative control containing culture media, group II as a positive control containing cells in culture media, group III 5% ethanol extracts of Moringa leaf, group IV 2% chlorhexidine solution and group V 2.5% NaOCl solution. The percentage of cell life is calculated from the optical density value of the ELISA reader. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal Wallis test followed by the Post Hoc test using the Mann Whitney test.Results: The results showed the percentage of life of fibroblast cells after exposure to 5% ethanol extracts of Moringa oleifera leaf = 33.31%, 2.5% NaOCl = 28.89% and 2% chlorhexidine = 39.37% (p = 0.000, p < 0.05).Conclusion: 5% ethanol extracts of Moringa oleifera and 2% chlorhexidine were moderately toxic to fibroblast cells while 2.5% NaOCl was strongly toxic (p = 0.004, p <0.05).

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the antibacterial activities of M. oleifera freeze dried extract on Staphylococcus aureus. Material and Methods: The antibacterial activities using two methods, microdilution method and agar diffusion method. The minimum inhibitory concentration is determined. The measurement of absorbance in microdilution method using a spectrophotometer at length wave 590 nm. The inhibition zone is measured using scalimeter. Results: The results showed both microdilution method and agar diffusion method present the inhibition activity of M. oleifera freeze dried extract on staphylococcus aureus. Conclusion: The finding confirmed M. oleifera freeze dried extract as the promising antibacterial natural agent, particularly on inhibiting S. aureus strain.
