Abstract

Automated writing evaluation (AWE) tools have been extensively used in foreign language writing classrooms, and their use has been progressively expanding recently. The study investigates an overview of Grammarly’s Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE). The research employed a quasi-experimental, comparative design with convenience sampling to assess the effects of Grammarly on the automated writing evaluation and self-editing of 56 administrative officers. The findings demonstrate that Grammarly’s AWE editing groups produced many better-written outputs. Grammarly’s AWE editing and self-editing experimental groups outperformed the control groups that did not engage in Grammarly’s AWE software. The level and complexity of the impact articles written by experimental groups are much more significant. The comparison was made between automated and non-automated editing. It demonstrates the existence of a considerable advantage for AWE editing. There were statistically significant changes in favor of the post-test between the pretest and post-test mean scores for both groups. These outcomes may be clarified with the software’s contribution. There is no difference between the experimental groups that are statistically significant. This result corresponds with whether there is a substantial difference in the effects on the writings of Grammarly’s AWE and self-editing experimental groups.

Abstract

Students’ low motivation in learning listening skill, inappropriate listening comprehension teaching, and insufficient facility and technological knowledge for online learning were found during preliminary research in seventh-grade students of a junior high school in Bantul. Action research was conducted with an aim to improve listening comprehension learning of grade seven students of the school through digital storytelling. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected during and after the research. It was found that students’ listening comprehension learning was improved based on the result of tests and assessment score in every meeting. Students’ mean score in pre-test improved from 44.44 to 64.44 in post-test with a medium score of N-gain (N-gain = 0.31). Other than that, the development was also observed during the process of learning in the classroom. Students’ mean score in weekly assessment improved from 60.56 in the first meeting to 65.56 and 76.11 in the second and third meeting. The reasons behind this improvement were analyzed through qualitative data, observation and interview with the collaborator. In the end, digital storytelling is able to improve students’ listening comprehension because it is a fun and interesting learning media for students and creative teaching media for teachers.

Abstract

Integration of technology into the teaching and learning process is one strategy for increasing the efficiency of the learning process for both students and instructors. Numerous academic work studies have been conducted to evaluate the effects of integrating the Kahoot application into educational settings, with a focus on the academic achievement of students and their subjective evaluations of this technology. Our research objective to fill a vacuum in the literature by examining learners' perspectives of using Kahoot as a learning motivation tool in the English department of a private institution in East Kalimantan. This investigation is of the quantitative research variety. Twenty male and forty-two female participants completed questionnaires as part of this study. This analysis examines the effects, benefits, and challenges associated with the use of Kahoot, as observed through the authors' personal experiences. The participants conveyed their enjoyment and enthusiasm for the activities, perceiving them as a way to improve the classroom environment and make learning more enjoyable. There is a growing interest in determining how the motivation and engagement of learners influence their learning.

Abstract

Abstract: Proficiency in writing is an essential requirement for English learners as a second language. There is a correlation between the ability to effectively organize and structure written words and the diversity of self-directed learning and personality traits exhibited by students. The study included students enrolled in the English Education department at IAIN Palangka Raya who were taking a course on paragraph writing. This study employed a correlation design. The reseacher adapted the 25 item Self-Rating Scale of Self-Directed Learning (SRSSDL) designed by Willimson (2007), International Personality Item Pool (IPIP-BFM-25) designed by Akhtar and Azwar (2019) and students paragraph writing test. Self-Directed Learning (X1) and the Personality Traits (X2) simultaneously had a effect on the Writing Ability (Y). The Coefficient of Determination (R) is 85.0%, indicating that the amount of contribution of X1 and X2 simultaneously. Then the R2 = 0.72% meaning that both variable gave contribution about 72.00%. Effective Contribution (SE) each variable Self-Directed Learning (X1) and Personality Traits (X2) individually is 09.96% and 61.60% to the Writing Ability (Y). The total contribution is 71.56%.

Abstract

Most students feel that listening is a difficult English skill because the strategies that the teachers use in listening classes are too monotonous, so students feel unmotivated in the learning process. However, there is a lack of researchers who have studied the implementation of running dictation games to increase students' motivation. This research aims to examine the use of games, especially running dictation games, in increasing student motivation in listening classes. This research was conducted at Mts. Darunnaim YAPIA, involving 23 students from 7th grade. The researcher used a qualitative approach to compile this research. The data was collected through the questionnaire for all of the 7th-grade students, and the Interviews with several students after the game was implemented. This study also analyzed the data with descriptive analysis and thematic analysis. The results of this research show that the motivation of Grade 7 YAPIA students still needs to improve due to external factors such as the strategies used, and media that does not support learning. In addition, the use of running dictation games in the learning process can boost students motivation and enhance their participation in the listening classroom

Abstract

The presence of some National Sains Olympiad questions which are written in English is a challenge not only faced by students but also by teachers who are assigned to train them for the Olympiad. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to describe the constraints faced by the students in doing Mathematics and Science Olympiad tests which are written in English and the strategies implemented by the teachers during the trainings on Olympiad. This research is a case study conducted at five Yogyakarta elementary schools which won National Science Olympiad. This study was conducted by employing interviews with ten students who won the Olympiad in the field of Mathematics and Sciences; and five coaching teachers, observation of training activities, and document studies on training materials. The data was then analyzed by using interactive analysis model namely data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing/verification. The results showed that the constraints faced by students in doing Mathematics and Science in English language, such as the students’ misunderstanding of the meaning of specific terms in Math and Science, the difficulty in understanding sentence stucture of the questions, and the low reading ability of the students. Strategies of the teachers in Olympic training such as simplify the language in the questions, giving assistance during the trainings on Olympiad, collaboration of Mathematics, Science, and English teachers, and the use of technology. The implications of this study were the presence of demands to expand the coverage of English learning materials goal and to improve its teaching quality through integrated learning materials and collaboration with other teachers. Therefore, learning material development and design of teachers’ collaboration in Olympic training can be explored deeper in further research.
