Abstract

AbstractThe environmental ethic of the Kanekes people lies in their world view of the navel of the universe (inti jagat), namely Sasaka Pusaka Buana which two primary events took place in a locality they refered to: the origin of the universe and the first humankind who was descended to the earth. The Kanekes people were entrusted to maintain the navel of the universe by a God (Batara Tunggal), and their ancestors (karuhun). Therefore within the moral system of the Kanekes People, the cosmos is regarded as a moral subject, like the human. The environmental ethic of the Kanekes people originates rom their philosophical views and culture, on which they establishes the foundations of their environmental ethic. Then from those bases, the Kanekes people formulates their environmental moral norms, which consist of proximate and ultimate norm. The proximate norms of their morality are their being congruent with the sacredness of the cosmos and Kanekes as the navel of the universe; their being congruent with the holiness of the human soul, which should be maintained; their being congruent with the tradition and the belief of their ancestors; the principles of modest life and the exploitation of things only when necessary. These proximate norms culminated to the ultimate norm which constitutesthe origin and the goal of mankind, i.e. God.Keywords: environmental ethic, ecology, Urang Kanekes, the navelof the universe, indigenous society, Sunda Wiwitan.

Abstract

In this work, “Horkheimer’s critical theory” is critically discussed in its relation with the presence of “prestigious” fact achieved by positivistic sciences. However, positivistic sciences have many contributions in providing the new dimensions for human life. In the case of Horkheimer’s critical theory, it is clear that Horkheimer does not appreciate enough the positive-capitalistic approach. Even though, the antagonistic relation between “self” and “nature” in Horkheimer’s point of view must be investigated. For social scientists that has social theory orientations and rigorous and applicative methodology, Horkheimer’s critical theory is viewed as uncompleted social theory because he never provides a comprehensive method for social analyses. Even social theory properly leaves its function in “portraying” and analyzing community, Horkheimer reminds that there is a more important function of social theory called as “emancipatory-awareness”. If human beings do not believe in optimism to pick up the better situation or to realize their “utopia”, actually they have failed to sense their self-existence.

Abstract

AbstractThomas Kuhn divides scientific movement into normal science and revolutionary science. There is a difference between the type of scientific methodological research in normal scienceand that in revolutionary science. Scientists during normal science conduct their research activities restricted on the box of paradigmshared with the result that scientific research in normal science are always progressive in terms of cumulative progress. Scientists are tied to the tradition of paradigm-shared, and they difficult to release their dependence upon the paradigm-shared moreover to make innovation to the paradigm. Meanwhile, scientists during revolutionary science conduct their research activities based on the observations, experiments, and idea beyond the generally accepted paradigm which becomes questionable because of its failure to solve the crisis. Scientific research in revolutionary science is always progressive in terms of non-cumulative progress. Scientists become innovated person who see the crisis from a new perspective rather than from the tradition of the old-paradigm.Keywords: paradigm, normal science, scientific revolution

Abstract

Language is a vital issue in a culture. Minangkabau as a devoted clan to their oral tradition has a unique linguistic dynamics. Through the "proverbs" inherited from its predecessor, satire and metaphor take its place as the center of Minangkabau culture models. However, the misunderstandings of the Minangkabau people during this time of sindir-kias meaning is no longer makes the same morality standards. Therefore, this study aimed to find a conception which can restore the  "sindir-kias" in the life of the Minangkabau people in particular and the Indonesian people in general. This study is a research library by the hermeneutic method with the elements of methods, such as descriptions, verstehen, induction-deduction, inclusive language, and interpretation. The material object of this research is "sindir-kias" as the center of Minangkabau culture models. The formal object of this research is axiology with the assistance of analytic philosophy. This research found that in the culture of Minangkabau language, there are adaptive and reflective capabilities in developing satire (sindiran) and allegory (kiasan). This proves that the traditional Minangkabau is very open in its linguistic development, but also at the same time is able to reflect and internalize it to be the product of Minangkabau culture. The intersubjectivity value, in this case, takes a very important role. Therefore, the value of which is owned by language Minangkabau tradition is a value of "adaptive-reflective", thus ensuring the emergence of linguistic dynamics, which of course steer the model of Minangkabau culture.
