Abstract

The availability of non-renewable resources to generate electrical energy has decreased. The National Energy Council says that Indonesia has huge potential renewable energy resources. The largest amount coming from solar energy. However, only 5% is utilized. The number of building owners who want to install the technology related to renewable energy on/in a building in Indonesia is still very small. This happens due to the high initial cost of installation. In case of an existing building, the boundaries added with the limitation of structure and limitation of potential-available integrated area. This study proposed a BIPV model in an existing building to contribute the maximum use of renewable energy in a relatively limited potential-available integrated area. The experimental method was applied to several models. Amount of electrical energy generated, and ROI were used as optimization parameters. ROI will give more comprehensive review to a building owner, to show that the time period is the most critical determinant of investment. The study shows that installation of PV on an opaque wall in the west orientation is the optimum one. The model generated 777741 kWh/year of electrical energy, exceeding the existing consumption. ROI calculated in 4.36 years, relatively short compared to 25 years of PV life guarantee. The optimization on this model is supported by its largest number of integrated area and high annual radiation received. This study shows significant results to the building owner. Electrical energy and ROI should be fully taken as a consideration of when to decide to apply PV.

Abstract

Semarang Gallery resulted from a heritage building conservation project reused with a new function or known as adaptive reuse, which indicates that it can cause changes in its visual character. This study aims to find the level of change in the visual character of the exterior, interior, and at close range of Semarang Gallery due to the adaptive reuse approach. This research uses a qualitative method, with graphical and descriptive data analysis. The results of the analysis show that the adaptive reuse approach changes the existing building typology, which requires adapting to technical improvements in almost all aspects of the building; thus giving rise to changes in the visual character of the exterior, interior, and at close range with different levels of significance. Changes that are in line with conservation principles can increase its parameter function’s value, on the contrary; inconsistencies can remove the distinctiveness of the visual character.

Abstract

As a trade center, Semarang Chinatown contributes to developing the economic activities of the city. The expansion of the economic network creates various opportunities through informal activities. This is reflected in the inclusiveness of the local community, using roads as venues of economic activities, especially on Gang Baru Street in Semarang Chinatown. The street connects the neighborhood, accommodates informal activities, and serves as a traditional market. Furthermore, it has been privatized by trading activities from the shophouses and street vendors. The claim trend has commodified the formal use of the street as access infrastructure. Consequently, the differences in formal and informal activities cause the use of road space to be fragmented. Therefore, this study examines the fragmented use of Gang Baru street caused by the segmented informal activity interests. The qualitative method is used for a thorough bottom-up observation of the street’s activities. Various activities are classified based on the street user segmentation by organizational practices and spontaneous community behavior. This categorization is also based on the users’ participatory or antagonistic response to the street’s formal use. The result shows activity diversity portrays a dialectic interest representing the fragmented use of Gang Baru Street.

Abstract

There are many city parks currently used as public spaces and children's play facilities in Indonesia that do not meet the criteria for child-friendly open spaces. It is, however, important to note that biophilic elements are the natural environment components determining the quality of city parks. Therefore, this research was conducted to evaluate the criteria, perceptions, and development of biophilic elements in a child-friendly open space using Merjosari park in Malang which is one of those developed to achieve a child-friendly city as the case study. The biophilic elements criteria were determined using the Analysis Hierarchy Process (AHP) method while the perception of elements used the Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) method. First, the results showed the main criterion for the biophilic element according to experts is well-being while the highest sub-criterion is a safe space. Second, the seating element was found to be the visitors’ perception of quality based on the highest level of suitability while the garden element has the highest service performance and safe space had the highest level of importance. Third, playing equipment was recommended to be prioritized in the development of biophilic elements quality based on its high value in the IPA analysis. Finally, safe space was discovered to be the most important biophilic element of child-friendly open space at Merjosari Park, Malang City according to expert criteria and visitors’ perception.

Abstract

The degradation of land due to conversion is a global process with a significant effect on land use. The intensification of land use in Makassar City is observed to have dramatically affected water retention hydrology, thereby, leading to an increase in volume, runoff rate, and filtration loss. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize infiltration by mapping the classification of infiltration capability based on the land-use changes observed between 2005 and 2020 as well as the inundation occurring due to surface runoff. This research uses a quantitative method by calculating the run-off spatial data and statistics to determine the area with low infiltration capability in the built-up environment. The results showed a decrease in infiltration capability of 3.6% which represents 617.72 ha at critical levels in the built-up area in the last 15 years. This means it is possible for decision-makers to implement infiltration optimization steps as the alternative solution by focusing only on the land-use distribution with critical initial conditions. The findings of this research are expected to minimize surface runoff rate and excess inundation potential in order to achieve sustainable land use in Makassar City.

Abstract

The phenomenon of a single architectural form has become a global problem. This is also observed in Indonesia as indicated by the specific traditional architecture known as Osing in Banyuwangi. Therefore, this study focuses on the issue of the essence of space created from the surrounding elements in Osing traditional architecture using a qualitative method which involved prioritizing new reading tools including the Lincourt phenomenological approach and the architectural anatomy of Salura. The results showed that the activity forms a linear circular pattern while the lower scoping elements form a geometric arrangement and have a linear movement direction. Moreover, the roof structure shows the dynamic quality of the elements which move from front to back. It was also discovered that the scope of the Osing space is a barrier with the activities within the house isolated and inwardly oriented. The use of local natural materials also provides a warm, rustic and simple character as well as a chance for sustainability. Furthermore, the structures and constructions show that the architecture prioritizes honesty and simplicity. This, therefore, means the essence of space in Osing architecture is in Jrumah based on the space which was found to be closed, natural, simple character, and prioritizing honesty. These findings are expected to be an additional source of knowledge on Osing architecture, serve as input for architects in designing modern houses in Banyuwangi, and input for policymakers in formulating a strategy to preserve this traditional architecture.

Abstract

The basement lobby area in Campus II of Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta was originally designed to function as a vehicle parking and laboratory space with noise-generating equipment, but it is currently being used as a place for students to do assignments. Meanwhile, it has been discovered that psychosocial stress can be caused by continuous exposure to noise, thereby, making it necessary to consider the quality factor of the indoor environment of this area for students use. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the effect of the noise in the basement lobby area on student work productivity and psychosocial stress. This involved the use of a quantitative method by measuring the noise level using Phonic PAA3 per one point in the 4 segments of the corridor according to the provisions of SNI 7231:2009. Moreover, a qualitative approach was also applied by distributing online and offline questionnaires to determine the perception of noise, psychosocial stress, and its effect on work productivity. A total of 109 respondents consisting of 48 architecture, 40 civil engineering, and 21 techno-biology students using the lobby as a place to do assignments were used as the respondents. The data obtained were analyzed using a simple regression method in the SPSS25 program. It is important to note that the quantitative and qualitative measurements were not conducted simultaneously. The results showed that the study room does not fulfill the standard reference value of 45dB required for the noise level as indicated by the highest and lowest noise (Leq) values recorded to be 74.10dB and 64.34dB in segments B and A, respectively, as well as the overall average of 70.1dB. Furthermore, the combination of the qualitative and quantitative data showed that the noise affects students' psychosocial stress by 43% and productivity by 45%, hence, this means the noise reduced the student productivity. Therefore, the noise factor needs to be considered in planning a workspace or converting the function of space in order to ensure its purpose is achieved maximally.
