Abstract

The research was conducted to explore the colour that can create a calm and peaceful environment in kindergarten classroom. Colour is the mood of a space as each colour has its own meaning. Hence, the colour used in every space need to suit with the activity done in the space. Kindergarten is among many other spaces that used colour a lot because children like colour and will be attracted by colour, especially bright colour. Kindergarten classroom is one of the spaces that preschool children stay in most of time, hence, the colour scheme required careful consideration to calm down children and let them concentrate on learning. From the previous research, it was found that researcher mainly focus on kindergarten design, kindergarten furniture design or on colour design in other interior spaces, such as restaurant, office, and hospital. Hence, the research gap for the will be the colour in the kindergarten classroom which can create a calm and peaceful environment. As there are different colour scheme for interior design, the most suitable colour scheme had identified for the kindergarten classroom to make the preschool children can calm down and pay attention in the classroom. The research concludes that the light green and light blue colour is the ideal colour for a calm and peaceful kindergarten classroom.

Abstract

One of the biggest contributors to energy usage are built infrastructures (up to 40%). Minimizing energy usage efficiently could reduce cost and give a better impact on the environment in terms of sustainability. As a tropical country that experiences sun exposure throughout the year, designing a building in Indonesia needs to respond to the impact of solar radiation inside the room for comfort and energy-saving effort. In addition, the topography of the site is considered throughout the process of designing a building, in which the site is located on sloped terrain (with a slant of 15 degrees celsius) and may influence the orientation and shape as it affects access to sunlight and view. This paper aims to identify which building orientation and shape of a project have the least energy usage during its preliminary phase on sloped terrains in tropical climate areas. 3 different building orientations (west-east, combination, North-east – South-west) and shapes are analyzed through experimental method by utilizing Sefaira as a plugin to Sketchup software using ASHRAE 90.1 - 2019 (ZONE 2) as material standard for the analysis. This research focuses on how a sloped site, as well as climate, affects building efficiency and how the orientation and shape of the building affect the building’s energy consumption. Difference in characteristics of the land, preferably regarding flat or sloped terrain lands, does not guarantee whether the energy usage will change, but it shows that sloped terrain sites could benefit on reducing the cooling load of a building as well as daylighting.

Abstract

The informal aspect of daily activities plays a role in shaping the quality of urban architectural design. This is due to the fact that public open space has become a place for all community-based informal activities, thereby, making the public-private sphere a collective spectrum and using the outdoor as a common space for all. These activities, however, have the ability to create a sense of belonging to the urban community towards a place even though they are temporary. An example of this is the Semarang Chinatown area which is a street space being used as a living outdoor space (sense of place). Therefore, this study was conducted to understand the character of the outdoor living room in the street space through the sense of place dimension. This involved using qualitative methods through field observation data to identify the place identity, place attachment, and place dependence. The findings showed that the informal activities reviewed through the sense of place dimension shape the character of the outdoor living room in the street space and this is expected to increase the quality of the street as a public open space in the Semarang Chinatown area.

Abstract

Design is a unified system consists of parameters that influence each other, so design considerations must be careful. Building design performance is a measurable parameter, and integrating the planning and design process can make decision-making more focused and measurable. This paper describes the benefits and constraints of integrating building design performance simulations in the architectural studio design process using a design process of the Student Learning and Innovation Center. The study emphasizes cooling loads and daylighting using building design performance simulation to analyze the design form, layout, and building skin through shading study, UTCI, thermal comfort, wind, solar radiation, daylight, and cooling loads. Simulation using ladybug, honeybee, and sefaira software. The result is BPS utilization in the design process can assist designers in considering strategic design decisions when the problem is simple or aims to study climatic conditions. When the design problem is complex or requires detailed simulation, BPS utilization in the design process becomes more complicated so that the potential for simulation errors is more significant.

Abstract

The study aims to determine the pattern and type permanence levels of the elements used to build the Kasongan area in the last 60 years. Permanence is an approach used to determine identity in the context of regional change. Kasongan is a rural-urban area with agrarian resources located between Bantul and Yogyakarta and influenced by urban globalization. This historic area is almost two centuries old and has developed into a village of pottery craftsmen. Adaptation to environmental and cultural changes after the 1960s made Kasongan transform from an agrarian village character to an industrial and then to a tourism village-town. Changes in this region can be seen in the building and area typology, which developed into a sustainable tourism area. The locus taken is a part of the Kajen and Beton Hamlet, which are indicated as early stages of growth and development direction for the Kasongan in the last few decades. The is a typo-morphological study carried out using a morphological mapping method and a regional typological process. The results found spatial patterns and types that (1) persisted as the initial identity, (2) changed, and (3) disappeared.

Abstract

Direct evaporative cooling (DEC) is a passive cooling strategy adopted in predominantly hot regions to restore building thermal comfort with less energy consumption and minimum impact on the environment. The implementation and studies of DEC in tropical housing are limited. Although DEC can reduce air temperature, an increase in relative humidity can still be seen as a disadvantage. Many materials were introduced for the cooling pads, but none was explicitly proposed for use in the housing unit. The present study explores different cotton-based fabrics to be used in the proposed evaporative cooler of the public housing unit in Surabaya. It analyses its ability to reduce air temperature and identify the increase in air humidity that may occur. A small-scale model of the housing unit that incorporates an evaporative cooling system is set, and internal air temperature and humidity are recorded. Results of the analysis show that different fabric specifications can lead to various thermal performances. A cotton-based blanket is found to be suitable for the proposed strategy.

Abstract

Pura (temple) is a sacred place for the Hindus in Bali, such as Pura Pabean, which is included in pura kahyangan jagat (temple for all people). Pura Pabean is located on the northern part of the main Singaraja-Gilimanuk road, Banyupoh Village, Gerokgak Sub-district, Buleleng Regency, Indonesia. The area also extends into the ocean and is positioned on steep rocky terrain. Unlike other Pura in Bali, this temple stands on the base of an ornament, as a Bedawang Nala (cosmic tortoise) with two dragons (serpents) wrapped around the body. The embodiments of the tortoise and the two dragons are the essential parts of the temple, with their heads overlooking the ocean. Therefore, this study aims to examine the interpretation of Bedawang Nala, as the Hindu icon located on the base of Pura Pabean. In this analysis, Capon's theory was developed and combined with the stages of the hermeneutic method. The analyzed Bedawang Nala was also a combination of Akupara (tortoise) with Vedava-nala (cosmic fire/fire of the apocalypse). This indicated that the body was similar to that of a tortoise, with the head being observed as a cosmic fire resembling the figure of a mare. The results showed that Bedawang functioned as an aesthetic and symbolic ornament, which depicted the bhu mandala (earth or region) in the middle of the ocean. This was a description of God's position in His manifestation, as the ruler of ports, trade, and water flow. These results are expected to develop the traditional Balinese architecture in the present and future activities and performances.
