Abstract

There is a recent focus on households as residential units but most of the studies conducted rely on demographic and economic perspectives using economic value maximization schemes. The research on the household is considered necessary due to its close relation to family and kinship issues observed in different aspects of life and based on societal diversity associated with certain socio-cultural values. This is most important in Asia, including Indonesia, where extended families and households are regarded as ideal. Therefore, this study was conducted to understand the significance of socio-cultural values on the spatial living implications in extended households using qualitative methods, especially ethnography, which involved targeted informants, interviews, and observations. The results showed that the socio-cultural values held by the members of the household are based on the definition of kinship as a valuable bond, desire to share, cooperation, as well as the acceptance and sustenance of tradition. Moreover, the spatial arrangement concerning the allocation, use, and access to rooms based on gender in an extended family was observed to be identical to those in a nuclear family. Meanwhile, additional members are allowed to use different rooms in the house and also to interact with hosts.

Abstract

Badut Temple is the oldest temple on Java Island and a historical relic of the Kanjuruhan Kingdom that collapsed due to natural and human factors. Therefore, this study aims to determine the suitability of the Badut Temple design drawn by B. De Haan. Based on the vastu purusha mandala philosophy, this Hindu-style temple uses repeated divisions of squares to prove that the design of the head of the temple uses Fractal Geometry with the box-counting method. The results showed that the fractal dimension index on the foot, body, and head with a ratio of 1.878: 1.870: 1.872 or be rounded up to 1:1:1. This means that the B. De Haan sketch design is similar to the existing temple. Furthermore, the ratio of the height of the foot, body, and head was 2.35:4.88:6.94 which is simplified to 1:2:3. Therefore, the Badut Temple adheres to the Vastu Purusha Mandala philosophy.

Abstract

This study discusses the spirit of place which is also known as the “genius loci” of two GPIB church buildings in Depok, Indonesia. It is important to note that the physical and spatial order of a structure theoretically has an expression usually interpreted according to the character and identity created by the observer or user. This means it is possible for buildings with the same function, liturgy, and space requirements but different physical arrangements to have the same spirit of place. The focus of this study is on the church of GPIB Immanuel and GPIB Pancaran Kasih in Depok and it was conducted qualitatively and descriptively through anatomical and phenomenological methods. The operational stage involves the emic steps which include field observations and structured or unstructured interviews for managers and informants doubling as the users of the buildings as well as ethical steps which are focused on the study of architectural theories. The results showed that the physical architectural order of the two churches creates a dynamic character and identity as well as a spirit of place even though they come from the same synod, order, and have the same liturgy and procession. This was discovered to be due to their similarities and differences.

Abstract

The interpretation differences of the policies implemented by the Second Vatican Council have a significant influence on the increasingly diverse views and manifestations of the sacred expressions in the Catholic Church. Therefore, this research focuses on the sacred expression of the Sanctuary as the most important space of the Catholic Church. It was carried out at St. Laurentius Catholic Church Bandung because it applies various artificial lighting techniques to its worship space. Furthermore, this research discusses how and to what extent artificial lighting techniques are able to support the sacred expression of the contemporary Catholic Church Sanctuary. Data were quantitatively collected through working drawings, measuring the illumination level in the work area, and determining the brightness of space-forming materials. Meanwhile, data were also qualitatively collected through field observations and visual recordings. The analysis process was used to analyze the architectural sacredness, such as orientation, hierarchy, balance, and symbols. In addition, visual analysis was used for clarity, uniformity, balance, brightness, and spatial intimacy. The results showed that artificial lighting techniques play a significant role in forming sacred expressions of the Sanctuary of the St. Laurentius Catholic Church Bandung.

Abstract

This research investigates the critical role of physical linkage and connectivity in the integration between formal and informal urban areas of the city, as well as recognizes aspects related to physical and social segregation that prevent this integration process. The objective is to understand this role in relation to the viability of integration. Qualitative method describes effectiveness of connectivity and linkage thorough the complexity of interaction between formal and informal areas in the built-form and open space. This research includes two important areas in Bandung, Indonesia, namely, Hegarmanah and Ciumbuleuit. Findings show Hegarmanah as an enclosed configuration with more incidence of controlled areas, through physical barriers, legal restrictions and circulation limitations. Ciumbuleuit presents less controlled areas, encouraging a wider use of public space, a variety of services, commerce, commuting. Interaction between pedestrians and built environment has experienced more adaptation, in a more open configuration. In conclusion, space configuration, borders, limited access and forms of control represent obstructions to the integration process, impairing physical connectivity, encouraging spatial segregation due to isolation and linkage disruption. Integration will be stimulated when space is articulated and able to adapt. Coexistence of seemingly social and physically segregated formal and informal parts of the city can be comprehended when there is a correct interpretation of the role of physical linkage and connectivity through the analysis of space.

Abstract

Humans are homo religiosus with a natural desire that there is an absolute power beyond reasoning which makes them "existent". This is observed from their religious behaviors as well as the continuous increase in their spirituality. Humans have a basic need to worship according to their religious orders and the construction of mosques is considered the fulfillment of the main needs of Muslims to conduct their prayers. The diversity of mosque forms in West Java showed that there is a mutually influencing relationship between the basic need for space to accommodate prayer rituals which tend to be dogmatic and the human desire to appreciate architectural elements of mosques as a form of contextual and dynamic spirituality enhancement. The comparison between the needs and desires in mosque architecture as indicated in previous studies was used as the main reference to understand the dynamics of the meaning in mosque architecture in order to produce new meaning reading diagrams. This was achieved through three main stages with the first being the re-description of the ideograms and typograms pairing in each mosque from the previous studies, the second is the identification of keywords that form the basis of thought for architects, users, and organizers as a series of triangulation processes to reveal new meanings and functions in the case study of mosques, and the third is the placement of the results of the analysis on the Function-Form-Meaning diagram to produce a new meaning reading diagram to identify the dynamics of meaning in mosque architecture in West Java. The contribution of this study is to enrich the theory and method of the meaning process in mosque architecture as well as to serve as a guide for architectural practitioners in designing mosques.

Abstract

Buddhism is one of the oldest religions in the world, and the development has led to a great change in the typology of Buddhist architecture, and caused a complex scope of the concept. This complexity is due to the absence of architectural literature that regulates the addition of supporting functions, such as profane and sacred value, in improving Buddhists' education. However, the addition of a profane function reduces sacred value and act of worship, opposes architectural design, and defiles ritual activities. Furthermore, one of the functions that provide education as well as a personal approach to Buddhism is the museum. This research aims to examine the contextual relationship between main and supporting functions, namely the sacred (worship building) and the profane (museum), respectively. And also, to display the sacred value through architectural characteristics. The analytical method used the theory of sacredness and contextuality. This was further elaborated in various architectural scopes to produce a relationship between temples and museums, that apply sacred values according to Buddhist philosophy. The research leads to differences in principles application, such as orientation, hierarchy, boundary scope, geometric shapes, symmetry, repetition, material appearance, shape synergy, zoning, processions, atmospheric ambiguity, symbolic objects, boundary guards, and gathering areas.
