Abstract

Teaching special needs students becomes more challenging and frustrating. Moreover, some SLB in Kendari nowadays have not been facilitated by suitable learning media, particularly in EFL context.  This study describes the research that sought to understand if the teaching media electronic or not, using flashcards, foldable books, and posters, is under the necessities of deaf and hard hearing students. This question becomes the primary goal of the investigation, and its enlighten is divided into three specific goals. They are, finding out the effects of the media used in assisting special need students and EFL teacher in the class; helping them in communication and comprehending the teaching materials especially in vocabulary English class; and gaining EFL teacher’s and special need students’ motivation in teaching and learning process utilizing the media. This study used qualitative by single case study design, which was conducted about six months in 2018. Five students by deaf and hard hearing impairment of SLB-F Mandara (special private junior high school) are as the sample of this study. The observation list and depth-interview were utilized in data collection. After doing some interventions, the data analysis used data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results showed that by intervention and utilizing diverse media by flashcards, foldable books and posters could ultimately gain teacher’s and students’ motivation in the EFL context.

Abstract

This paper aimed to investigate the implementation of inquiry-based learning (IBL) in English teaching at candidate school of International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) in Surakarta and explore the benefits of its implementation in English teaching. Three English teachers at a candidate school of IB PYP in Surakarta participated in this study and they were chosen purposively. This research employed a qualitative approach and emphasized on a case study. The techniques for collecting data comprised in-depth interview and observation. The collected data were analyzed by the researchers through Constant Comparative Method (CCM). The results revealed that the implementation of inquiry-based learning in English teaching in this school used Bruce and Davidson's view and some features of IBL. That cycles involved asking, investigating, creating, discussing and reflecting. And the benefits of this method in English teaching based on IB PYP were 1) the teachers can create meaningful activities for the students, 2) teaching and learning were student-centered, 3) the students learn through language and get endurable understanding, and 4) it promotes students ’skills and attitude at teamwork.

Abstract

The practice of learner-centered approach (LCA) in enhancing foreign language teaching-learning process has been broadly recognized. Little research, however, have disclosed how this approach works and promotes learners’ improved abilities. While learner-generated material (LGM) is a principle of and one of the activities in learner-centered approach, it is currently under studied, thus little researchers discuss how it applies in EFL context. This qualitative case study investigated the teacher’s belief and classroom practice of learner-generated material in a flipped speaking class. The participant of the study was a teacher in a vocational high school. The instruments were participant observation, semi-structured interview, and documentation. The analysis showed that the teacher’s belief was mostly consistent with her classroom practices, i.e. beliefs about learning objectives, teaching modeling, and procedure of learner-generated material, teaching resources, classroom management, teacher’s role, students’ role, and assessment. Nevertheless, there were little discrepancies, e.g. teachers’ beliefs about classroom procedure. The present study recommends that teachers, especially those new to LGM, follow the present findings in order to recognize the aspects within LGM in the umbrella of LCA and understand how these methods practices. The implication of the study is this research will give a contribution in Indonesian ELT context by providing a new perspective of learner-centered approach through technology.

Abstract

This research was aimed to determine the effectiveness of online instructional material model for EFS courses developed through Moodle for Secretarial Academy (ASTRI) of Budi Luhur students when compared to the existing EFS instructional material. This qualitative research conducted in the second semester of 2007/2008 academic year. Meanwhile the data sources used in this study were respondents consisting of 48 ASTRI Budi Luhur students as well as documents consisting of observation guidelines and post test results. The students were divided into 2 classes, namely BA and BB classes. BA class is treated as an experimental class while BB class is treated as a control class. This experiment was carried out for 7 times fully online learning with synchronous learning method. In analyzing the data collected, the researchers used T-Test to find out the effectiveness of EFS instructional material through Moodle. Based on the results of the post test conducted, EFS instructional material through Moodle had been proven to be able to improve four english skills which include listening, reading, speaking and writing to the students of ASTRI Budi Luhur Jakarta.

Abstract

This paper aimed to investigate the use of metadiscourse markers in scientific journal articles. Data of this qualitative research consisted of metadiscourse markers collected from eight journal articles of a special edition published by LLT Journal: A Journal on Language and Language Teaching.  The collected metadiscourse markers used in the journal articles were analyzed using discourse analysis based on ten metadiscourse marker categories. Results showed that the analysed journal articles contained 708 metadiscourse markers, with more interactive metadiscourse markers, reaching 529 occurrences, than interactional metadiscourse markers, occurring 179 times. Transitions, such as “but” and “thus”, with 249 occurrences, were the most frequently-used metadiscourse marker and boosters, such as “in fact” and “definitely”, with 24 occurrences, were the least productive marker.  Thus, readers can gain a better understanding of the use of metadiscourse markers when using English. It is expected that English language learners and instructors can benefit from the results of this study, particularly concerning the use of metadiscourse markers in academic writing.

Abstract

This article discusses the preservation of Arabic punctuation in the history of Quran writing using a critical history design. The author begins by recounting the beginning of the laying of Naqth (punctuation), history, type and the form of Naqth (punctuation) found by Abu al-Aswad ad-Duali by giving examples of comparison of classical Qur’an manuscripts not accompanied by punctuation. The author then examines Abu al-Aswad ad-Duali's biography, followed by the reasons for the compiling of Arabic rules and convinces that he was the first person laying down of Arabic rules despite the controversy surrounding it. Likewise, the type of punctuation (the Naqth) discovered is an i’rāb punctuation (the Naqth), not a punctuation of i‘jām.

Abstract

The research aimed to describe the translation techniques and translation qualities of Dayak cultural terms.  The data were obtained from tatum, an oral culture of Dayak that had been transcribed and rewritten in Dayak Ngaju, Indonesian and English in a book entitled The Ot Danum from Tumbang Miri until Tumbang Rungan. The research used descriptive qualitative method with content analysis. It attempted to explain the translation techniques and translation qualities of Dayak cultural terms that were translated from Dayak Ngaju to Indonesian and from Indonesian to English. The Dayak cultural terms analysed were related to organization, customs, belief, and kinship system of Dayak. The translation techniques of Dayak cultural terms from Dayak Ngaju to Indonesian were pure borrowing, naturalized borrowing, established equivalent, generalization, variant borrowing, description, and amplification, and the translation qualities were 2.80 of accuracy and 2.84 of acceptablity.  The Dayak cultural terms found in the target language (Indonesian translation) were decreased in number as the effect of the translation techniques used. The translation technique of Dayak cultural terms from Indonesian to English was pure borrowing, and the translation quality were 3 of accuracy and 2.75 of acceptability.

Abstract

Subtitling is an effective way to provide dialogues or narrative for a movie. The benefit is for people to enjoy the film even though its different from their native language. They enjoy movies over the world with different countries and styles by the dialogues translated. This research aims to know the strategy of responding to arguing in the file's subtitle titled Becoming Jane, to find out the translation techniques used by the translator, and to assess the translation quality in terms of the accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The research method is descriptive qualitative method with "Becoming Jane" movie and its subtitles as the data. Data were collected from document analysis and focus group discussions with the score of the accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The results indicate that the character used a strategy of agreeing, persisting, and complying. While six methods of translation were found, namely literal, modulation, established equivalence, borrowing, and adaptation. The quality of the translation of the strategy of responding to speech acts has been categorized as less accurate, less acceptable, and moderate in terms of readability

Abstract

This exploratory case study investigated three university teachers’ views about their students’ unmotivation, the combination of amotivation and demotivation, in General English (GE) classes and explored challenges these teachers faced as written in their reflections during six semesters, from the second semester of the 2016/2017 academic year to the first semester of 2019/2020. The study used secondary document analysis with the teachers’ reflections analyzed using thematic analysis per the purposes of the study. The study found that teachers generally perceived many of their students to be unmotivated. It could be seen from their passive, reticent, and not attentive behaviours in class. They also reported the widespread phenomenon of absenteeism among learners. These teachers faced complex challenges in dealing with unmotivated students. These challenges were attributed to various intertwining factors within the instruction such as unreliable assessment, fun, yet not very meaningful class activities, and learners’ low proficiency level, as well as GE programme's position that seemed to be second-prioritized in learners' respective departments' curriculum. Though this case study may be unique in its context, a certain extent of replication in other contexts is possible. Suggested future studies include a more thorough investigation about the quality of assessment in English for non-English department’s students’ classes as well as a large-scale survey about absenteeism phenomenon in GE classes among non-English major students.

Abstract

This paper examines Ganjar Pranowo’s political identity through his linguistic features constructed through his speech for responding the case of some of Ungaran citizen’s refusal on accepting a Covid-19 patient’s remain body. The speech is analyzed with Fairclough’s CDA as the main framework of analysis. There are three dialectical stages to complete his framework, namely the text analysis, the interpretation of text analysis, and the explanation. The textual part of the analysis will be explained by using Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics. Meanwhile, the interpretation part will be examined by using Halliday’s appraisal system, and van Dijk’s political discourse analysis will analyze the explanation part. This article states that the interpretation analysis are both ‘judgement’ and ‘appreciation’ from Ganjar shows some degrees of positive polarity and other degrees of opposing polarity. The Ganjar’s political identity represented from his response-speech is humanitarian-oriented, socio-religiously aware, status quo holder, and as a part of the bigger political system’s discourse maker. In this case, response-speech could be selected and in line with the context of society need. Therefore, this article suggests that disaster management should not differentiate community identity on the one hand. The elite also could deliver the policies in a soft statement that is accepted by the public on the other hand.
