Abstract

This paper is intended to disclose the interrelationship between Greek philosophy with the development of nahwu. The research is based on literature data, and the collected data are classified and analyzed using inductive and comparative method. The research results show that nahwu development is not apart from the influence of philosophy. The interconnection has occurred since the period of al-Muqaffa who has translated many works of Aristotle and Plato which al-Khalil makes as reference in arranging nahwu principles. The influence of philosophy on nahwu can be identified in two things, which are in methodological and terminological aspects.

Abstract

This paper aims at investigating how student subtitlers practice making subtitle of “Ambilkan Bulan” movie from Indonesian into English. This subtitling project is expected to help students sharpen their translation skills while learning linguistic and cultural aspects of both Indonesian as the source language (SL) and English as the target language (TL) in this study. In addition, students are also expected to have more practices on the technical aspects of subtitle to convey the message in the limited time and space by applying existing subtitle software. The data of this study were taken from students’ translations in Subtitling class. The data were analyzed descriptively to identify the strategy used by students based on Gottlieb's ten subtitle strategies and the technical constraints they commonly faced in making the subtitle. The results of this study indicate that students generally apply all of these strategies with varying frequencies and linguistics-related problems. Transcription strategy is the most frequent strategy applied by the students. This study also shows that students still struggle with the technical aspects related to cueing duration, rhythm, and division of subtitle which are sometimes less synchronous and eventually distracted viewers’ convenience

Abstract

Language and cognition are interdependent elements which are currently relevant to second language acquisition issues. Learners will simultaneously acquire the thinking rhetoric carried out by a target language once they acquire the language itself. The externalization of the cognitive process can be seen from learner’s writing product or speaking performance that have been greatly investigated by numbers of researchers. The proposed problem was what happened to multilingual learner’s thinking rhetoric. Did they easily change between one language rhetorical styles to another? Or, their cognitive control mechanism was just intersected?  This study aims at reviewing the concept of multilingual learner’s thinking rhetoric along with their externalizations. It is expected that this study contributes to unlocking the dilemma of learners’ cognitive problems when acquiring multilanguage and initiating further research concerning how to handle multilingual learners’ language rhetorical styles.

Abstract

Vocabulary Achievement is an element of learning the language which may assist students in understanding the language through basic English skills. Interactive Board Games are board games that use multimedia system (PowerPoint) teaching technique. This is often one of the traditional games that may be played by group activity and paired with a blackboard to focus on visual media activity. To find out the effect of using Interactive Board Games on students’ vocabulary achievement, we used the quantitative approach by assigning experimental research. There were two groups that we used in this research. Group one as experimental group and other as a control group. We used Total Pscycal Response (TPR) method for both groups, but we often gave Interactive Board Games to the experimental group in the learning process. There were eight meetings that we conducted into the experimental group with treatment using Interactive Board Games. We calculated the data from the test given when students learning English used Interactive Board Games. Before the test gave to the sample, the writer gave the test to students who have the same ability but not sample to know regarding validity and reliable of the test. Based on the t-test, we found that the t-ratio was higher than the t-table. The result indicated that there was a significant difference between the students who were taught using Interactive Board Games and the students who were not taught using Interactive Board Games.
