Abstract

The objective of this research was to investigate the impact of using video clip in the development of listening skills in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. The study utilized an experimental research design with a quasi-experimental methodology. The participants of the study were the eleventh-grade students of SMA Ethika Palembang. Pretest and post-test data were collected from both the experimental group, which received video clips, and the control group, which received the lecturing method. Paired sample t-tests were used to analyze the pretest and posttest data, while independent sample t-tests were used to compare the post-test results between the two groups. The results of the paired sample t-test showed that both groups demonstrated improvement in their listening scores after the treatment. The analysis of the data revealed that there was a significant difference in the listening scores between the two groups.

Abstract

This investigation looks at the usefulness of Duolingo in improving speaking abilities among eighth-grade students at SMPN 46 Palembang. The research employs Quantitative method through a quasi-experimental designed with a control and an experimental group. Population was 120 students and the sample selected by random sampling in terms of 60 students as sample in this research. Data collected by speaking test and analysing data by using dependent and independent sample t-test. Results, dependent sample t-test indicate a significant improvement in speaking proficiency after using Duolingo. Independent sample t-test show that Duolingo group outperformed of control group. This study's novelty lies in its contextual application within an Indonesian secondary school, providing localized insights into Duolingo's effectiveness. Conclusion, Duolingo significantly enhances speaking skills among eighth-grade students, offering advantages such as increased engagement, immediate feedback, and personalized learning.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the process of teaching and learning reading comprehension and improve students' reading comprehension ability by applying the REAP strategy. The researcher used classroom action research at the class A of the fourth semester students of English department of IAIN Kerinci. The class consisted of 22 students. The researcher conducted this study in two cycles and three meetings per cycle. Observation and test were employed in obtaining the data. For the test, the researcher used a reading comprehension test. The results showed that the process of teaching reading using the REAP strategy is very interesting. Students showed their participation during class. The results also showed an improvement in students' reading comprehension. This can be considered from the student's scores. It can be summarized that the REAP strategy could be used as a strategy for teaching reading comprehension.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out how project-based learning may help students become more proficient writers, critical thinkers, and self-sufficient. The descriptive-quantitative method was used in this study. This approach focused on combining numerical data. Using a whole sample approach, the study focuses on sixty students enrolled in the Institute for Islamic Studies of Curup's English Study Programme. The study examined how students' writing proficiency, critical thinking, and self-efficacy in English—their target language—were affected by project-based learning (PBL). With a 14.46-point gain between the pre- and post-test writing achievement, the findings demonstrated a considerable improvement. The critical thinking essay writing score of fifth-semester students rose from 78.43 to 84.05, representing a 04.02 point gain from the start of the exam. Five categories of analysis were applied to the data: organisation, focus, reasoning, integrations, and conventions. According to the study's findings, PBL raised students' self-efficacy in writing classes.

Abstract

This research focuses on Campbell Monomyth’ analysis of South Sumatera folklore. The purposes of this research are to describe the intrinsic elements of each story in South Sumatera folklore and analyze how the Monomyth is present in each story of South Sumatera folklore. Monomyth theory by Joseph Campbell is used as the main theory to find out the stages of a hero’s journey or Monomyth in each of Sumatera Selatan folklore. To conduct this research, the researcher uses the descriptive qualitative method. The data sources in this research are the book entitled Kumpulan Cerita Rakyat Sumatera Selatan by Kurnianto, Nirmala & Rosita and the internet to complete the data. The researcher analyzes the data to find out the intrinsic elements and find out the presence of Monomyth theory in each of South Sumatera folklore. The result of the research shows all of the heroes in each of South Sumatera folklore completed all the sections of the hero’s journey or Monomyth; Departure, Initiation, and Return except the hero in the folklore of Raden Keling who only completed the sections Departure and Initiation. The missing section occurred because of the cultural difference. Therefore, South Sumatera folklore goes through the same stages as the stages of the hero’s journey or Monomyth.

Abstract

This research aimed at figuring out whether or not it is effective to use talking chips technique in speaking English in descriptive text. This research applied a quantitative research design in line with true experimental research approach and 180 students of 6 classes to be the population and 64 of them were selected as the samples using purposive sampling technique. To collect the data, the researchers used test in the form of oral test. To analyze the data, the researchers used paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. The results showed that The scores of posttest in experimental class was higher than control class with sig 0.00 < 0.05, which means that alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hyphothesis (Ho) was rejected. In other words, talking chips technique was effective in teaching speaking English in descriptive text to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 9 Prabumulih.
