Abstract

Palm oil processing in the industry produces products and waste; the waste generated from the palm oil processing process will have a negative impact on the environment if it is not processed. Oil palm empty fruit bunches are lignocellulosic solid wastes that contain cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose content, so they have the potential to be raw materials for making bioethanol. In the process of producing bioethanol, delignification is an early stage that aims to reduce the lignin content in lignocellulosic materials with alkaline or alkaline pretreatment solutions such as the use of NaOH can be used to help separate lignin from cellulose fibers. This study aimed to analyze the effect of NaOH concentration and delignification temperature on the lignocellulosic content of oil palm empty fruit bunches. The research method was arranged descriptively with two treatments: the concentration of NaOH consisting of 3%, 4%, and 5%, and the heating temperature consisting of 100 oC, 110 oC, and 120 oC. Lignocellulosic content can be calculated using the Chesson method analysis with the Microsoft Excel 2016 application as a data processor. The results showed that 1 M NaOH concentration with heating temperature had an effect on the observations of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin. The best treatment of 1 M NaOH concentration and heating temperature on hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin was produced by the treatment of 5% NaOH concentration with a heating temperature of 120 0C.

Abstract

Oil palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) are the most abundant solid waste from the palm oil industry and are underutilized, even though they have the potential to become industrial raw materials because they contain three fractions, namely cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. This research was carried out using the steam method using 1 molar sulfuric acid with concentrations of 6.4%, 7.6%, and 8.7%. The delignification temperature was measured at 120 oC and with different delignification times of 60 minutes, 90 minutes, and 120 minutes. The best treatment with 1 M H2SO4 concentration and heating time for hemicellulose was the treatment with 8.7% H2SO4 concentration and 90 minutes of heating time. The best treatment with 1 M H2SO4 concentration and heating temperature for cellulose was found to be 6.4% H2SO4 concentration with 90 minutes of heating time. The best treatment with a 1 M H2SO4 concentration and heating temperature for lignin was the 6.4% H2SO4 treatment with 90 minutes of heating time.

Abstract

Oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) is a large amount of palm oil industry waste and has the potential to be used as bokashi fertilizer with the addition of livestock manure to enrich its nutrient content. This study aims to determine the chemical quality of OPEFB bokashi by adding each chicken, cow, and goat manure based on the quality standards of organic fertilizer INS-19-7030-2004. The research was conducted from June to August 2022 in Tanah Bumbu Regency, South Kalimantan, and the Soil Laboratory of the Department of Soils, Faculty of Agriculture, Lambung Mangkurat University, Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan. This study used a quantitative method (nutrient analysis in the laboratory). The following treatments were used: K0 = OPEFB without adding livestock manure, K1 = OPEFB with adding chicken manure, K2 = OPEFB with adding cow manure, and K3 = OPEFB with the addition of goat manure. The results showed that treatment K1 (bokashi OPEFB with chicken manure) had better chemical quality than treatments K0, K2, and K3, namely parameters organic C (13,72%), total N (0.92%), C/N ratio (14.91%), total P (1.00%), total K (0.60%), total Ca (6.56%), and total Fe (0.02%). However, the total Mg parameter in the K1 treatment was 1.36% above the maximum SNI limit, and the pH parameters in all treatments (K0 4.91, K1 5.89, K2 4.59, and K3 5.05) were not in accordance with SNI-19-7030-2004.

Abstract

Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) is a beverage crop with high economic value. Provision of natural PGR, namely red unions, which will be extracted. This study aimed to determine the effect of red onionxtract (Allium cepa L.) as a growth regulator on cocoa seeds. The research was conducted at a screen house at the Polytechnic of Agricultural Development Manokwari (Politeknik Pembangunan Pertanian Manokwari). The study method used was a completely randomized design (CRD), using five treatments and 20 replications, so the number of samples was 100 seeds. The treatments tested on cocoa plant seeds P0 (control), P1 (25% concentration of red onion extract), P2 (50% concentration of red onion extract), P3 (75% concentration of red onion extract), and P4 (100% concentration of red onion extract). The measurement variables included germination percentage, plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, and seedling growth percentage. Differences in the concentration of growth regulators of red onion extract had a significantly different effect on seedling percentage and seed growth percentage and had a significant effect on plant height, stem diameter, and number of leaves of cocoa seedlings. Soaked cocoa seeds in red union extract with a concentration of 25% give optimum results.

Abstract

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is an important plantation commodity as the main raw material for producing sugar consumed in Indonesia. One of the varieties cultivated is VMC 86-550, but one of the technical obstacles to its cultivation is the slow and non-uniform growth of the seeds. Therefore, one effort to maximize the growth of budset seed varieties requires proper nutrition and contains growth-promoting hormones. Therefore, this study aims to determine the response of giving liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) from cow urine to the growth of VMC 86-550 sugarcane seedlings using the budset method. To find out the purpose, this study used a factorial randomized block design with a concentration factor of LOF of cow urine consisting of five levels (0%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%). The second factor is the application frequency which consists of once every 2 weeks and once every 4 weeks, so there were 10 treatments and repeated three times. This study used a completely randomized factorial design and was analyzed using ANOVA if there was a significant influence followed by Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at a 5% level using SPSS 20 software. Observation variables included plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, number of tillers, and root length of sugarcane seedlings up to 90 HST. The results showed that the addition of cow urine LOF had an effect on the growth of sugarcane seedlings, both from the concentration and frequency of application, but the combination of the two did not have a significant effect on all observation variables.

Abstract

The oil palm yield depends on its genetic and the interaction with environmental factors is affected by spatial arrangement of palm trees. The research objectives are to determine the effect of population density and planting year on oil palm productivity and vegetative growth. This research uses a factorial design arranged with a randomized complete design. Secondary data are palm productivity, fresh bunch number and bunch weight that were collected for three years (2019—2022). Primary data are stem height, frond length, and stem gird which were measured on 90 trees for each treatment combination. There are nine combinations with 810 palm trees that were sampled from 27 estate blocks (30 hectares for one block). The results showed that productivity and amount of oil palm FFB at densities ≥ 142, 136-141, and ≤ 135 SPH and planting years 2007, 2009 and 2011 (mature crop 12-15, 10-13, and 8-11 years) did not show significant differences. The heavier bunch weight was produced palm tree planted in 2007 with density ± 135 trees.ha-1.

Abstract

Many factors influence the development of oil palm, including socio-economic factors. Factors supporting success in oil palm cultivation must be considered as their contribution to the competitiveness of Indonesian palm oil to be accepted in export-destination countries. This study aims to determine the influence of socioeconomic factors on the competitiveness of oil palm. This research was conducted in Kertabumi Village, Kuaro District, Paser Regency, East Kalimantan Province. Data was collected in July-August 2023 with the questionnaires and interviews with respondents. Respondents in this study amounted to 65 farmers were determined using purposive sampling who members of the Bumi Subur cooperative in Kertabumi Village, Kuaro District, Paser Regency. The data analysis method uses the structural equation model-partial least square with the help of Smart-PLS software to find out what socio-economic factors affect the competitiveness of oil palm in Paser Regency, East Kalimantan Province. The results showed that the innovation factor of oil palm cultivation and the factor of production facilities had a positive and significant effect on the competitiveness of oil palm in Paser Regency, especially in Kuaro District, Kerta Bumi Village. This states that one way to improve the competitiveness of oil palm is to pay attention to the old factors of oil palm cultivation innovation, such as cultivating according to operational standards and environmentally friendly, to get an ISPO certificate. In addition, it is important to have complete production facilities by farmers to support oil palm cultivation and increase palm oil production.

Abstract

Basal stem rot caused by the fungus Ganoderma boninense is the major threat to oil palm plantations in Indonesia, especially for second generation. Handling oil palm residues during the replanting process greatly determines the fungal attack. This research aims to reveal how handling oil palm trunks affects G. boninense attacks on second generation oil palm plantations. The treatments studied were felled trunk and felled-chipped trunk, each represented by two blocks (five years old of oil palm) with a density of 143 trees/hectare. The results of the study showed that second generation oil palms had a very high prevalence of basal stem rot disease, even though there were differences in the incidence and severity of the disease. Chipping of felled trunk residues can slow the development of the disease. Management of palm residues has a major influence on the onset of this disease in replanted oil palms.

Abstract

In Indonesia, there has been a notable expansion in the area and productivity of oil palm plantations.  Oil palm is among the top seven plantation commodities prioritized for development.  High-quality seedlings are essential for optimal plant production.  However, several factors can impede oil palm productivity, including diseases that affect oil palm seedlings.  One such disease is brown spot disease caused by the fungus Curvularia sp.  The objective of this study was to determine the incidence and severity of brown spot disease in oil palm seedlings.  The research was conducted from May 2023 to June 2023 in Banyuasin Regency using a purposive sampling survey method.  Thirteen seedling locations were selected based on their adherence to good seedling criteria. Seedlings aged 6-12 months were used in this study.  At each location, five plots were surveyed, with 30-32 seedlings sampled per plot.  Supporting data, including fertilization, watering, and herbicide and fungicide application, were tabulated to supplement the research findings.  Results indicated that brown spot disease can affect plants as young as two weeks old.  Initial symptoms include brown spots that eventually widen and merge with other spots.  The average incidence of the disease was 93.29 % (± 7.89), with an average severity of 47.13% (± 13.23).
