Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan Fakta cerita dan Nilai Religiusitas tokoh utama dalam Cerita rakyat Puan Sipanaik karya Saafruddin Istur. Cerita Rakyat Puan Sipanaik dipilih karena cerita ini memiliki tokoh utama dengan sifat yang kompleks sehingga penulis tertarik untuk menelitinya. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif. Penelitian ini menggunakan Teori structural Robert Stanton dan Religiusitas Y.B Mangunwidjaja Sumber data dalam penelitian ini adalah Cerita rakyat Puan Sipanaik karya Safruddin Istur dalam bukunya BANGBAL. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah studi kepustakaan (library research) atau disebut dengan analisis isi (content analisys), yaitu langsung mengadakan pengamatan dan mecari identitas serta gambaran tokoh dan penokohan. Teknik analisis data menggunakan analisis mengalir, yaitu terdiri dari tiga alur kegiatan yang terjadi secara bersamaan, yaitu reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil analisis menunjukkan: (1) pada tokoh utama (Bapak Tua) ditemukan memiliki sifat, yakni berjiwa besar, bijaksana, dermawan, suka menolong, berjiwa ikhlas, pekerja keras; (2) Nilai religius yang ada pada cerita rakyat Puan Sipanaik adalah Hubungan religius dengan Tuhan yang mana Tokoh utama menonjolkan sifat religiusitasnya dengan tokoh pendukung yang ada dalam cerita. Nilai religius dengan sesama manusia adalah dengan adanya tolong-menolong antar sesama manusia pada cerita rakyat Puan Sipanaik. Nilai religius dengan alam adalah dengan memanfaatkan hasil alam yang telah diberika Tuhan yang Maha Esa.

Abstract

This research analyzes prejudice in The Hundred Foot Journey Novel. The novel explains about prejudice which is done by French towards Indian. This research aims to reveal rejections generated from prejudice that happened to Indian and to describe the behaviors of Indian when they experienced prejudice. This research uses Gordon Allport’s prejudice theory and then the prejudice generated several rejections: antilocution, avoidance, discrimination, physical attack and extermination. Prejudice also generated behaviors from the victim of it, in this case behaviors became the response. The theory of behavior is also based on Gordon Allport which divided into extropunitive and intropunitive behavior. The method of this research is qualitative research with mimetic approach. The data are narrations and dialogues that related to prejudice and also rejections from prejudice. The data are analyzed by using Allport’s theory and then the process of data analysis is using Miles and Huberman’s theory. The result of this research is four out of five rejections from prejudice are found in this research. There were antilocution, avoidance, discrimination, and physical attack. Meanwhile in this research, extropunitive was the most dominant behavior as the response from the Indian.

Abstract

This study links language, mind and Facebook social media. Currently, buying an selling using social media is a common thing to do by the community, but it should be noted that: 1) Language and thought relations in every sale and purchase transaction on the BUSAM Facebook group. This study uses the theory of Sapir-whrof, Jaen Piaget, and also Vygotsky, using psycholinguistic studies. This research use descriptive qualitative approach. Data is obtained by using a screen capture (screenshot) status in the BUSAM Facebook group. In addition, users also use the Facebook account interview technique. Then, examine and record the data obtained for analysis in accordance with predetermined theories. The results of this study state that, language and thought used by the community are generally an interrelated activity. So that the two cannot be separated. Language can influence the mind using sentences expressed through oral and written. The mind can influence language with ideas that arise in the mind and language as an intermediary for its expression. Language and mind, of course, cannot be separated because the two are interconnected and have an important role for society.

Abstract

This study examined Serena novel written by Ron Rash as the object of the research. The aimed of this research was to find out the portrayal of class distinction and labor exploitation in the novel. To achieve the purposes of the study, the research applied Marx’s Social Class and Exploitation theory, and International Labor Organization or ILO’s Indicators of Labor Exploitation. This research used descriptive qualitative research method and Marxist criticism to analyze the social issue of class exploitation reflected in the novel. The data in this research were words, phrases, sentences and paragraphs that indicated social class and exploitation. The result of this research showed two social classes, they were bourgeoisie and proletariat. Bourgeoisie referred to Serena, Pemberton, Buchanan and Wilkie who were owner of timber business, while proletariat were the workers whose life only depended on bourgeoisie for employment. Meanwhile, there were four forms of labor exploitation. First was excessive working hour, like worked eleven hours shift a day and only fifteen minutes break. Second was low salary, like cheap labor and inappropriate wages. Third was bad living condition, like limited and uncomfortable living condition, live in cheap and ragged wooden boxcar. And fourth was hazardous work, like no safety equipment, manual and dangerous tools, forced to work in moody ground and against extreme cold.Keyword: Marxist criticism, Capitalism, Class distinction, Exploitation, Mode of production.

Abstract

The study aims to identify the types of rejective behaviours portrayed in Matt Ruff’s Lovecraft Country novel and to discuss the portrayal of African-American characters’ responses to rejective behaviours. This research is a descriptive research that uses a mimetic approach and multicultural criticism to conduct the investigation. The data source of the study is Matt Ruff’s Lovecraft Country novel. The data are acquired from the narration and dialogues related to the mistreatments toward the African-American characters and their responses that are suitable to the criteria of Allport’s theory of rejective behaviours and Mellor’s responses to racism theory. The results show that verbal rejection (antilocution), discrimination, and physical attack are all portrayed in this novel albeit with different frequencies for each African-American character.  It is also discovered that the characters have depicted defensive response, controlled response, and confrontational response in dealing with rejective behaviours.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the characters of the Dunbroch Royal Family members which consists of Merida, Queen Elinor, King Fergus, Harris, Hubert and Hamish  as well as their role in the plot of the Brave (2009) film. There are two data sources in this research. First is the Brave (2009) film, and the second is the script of this film itself. The data then categorized by using Reams’s characterization. The role of the characters the connected wirh Kenney’s plot development. The result of this research show that Dunbroch Royal Family member characters consist of four different kind of characters and all of them except for King Fergus have a significant role in the plot of the story.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify types of rejective behavior that depicted in Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad and analyzed how the African-American slaves react toward these rejective behaviors. To conduct this research, the researcher used qualitative method, content analysis approach and multicultural criticism. The data source of this research was The Underground Railroad novel written by Colson Whitehead. The data were taken in the forms of words, sentences, clauses, phrases and narration that related to act of rejective behaviour experienced by African-American slaves and their reaction toward this rejective behaviour that suitable with Allport’s rejective behaviour theory and responses to rejective behavior theory. As analyzed, the results showed that all types of rejective behaviors were depicted in the novel. First, verbal rejection where in the action there were an indication of verbally insult like name calling, making fun of cultural makers and joking about physical attribute. Second, discrimination where in the action there were an indication of segregation and unfairly treatment between whites and blacks. Last, physical attack where in the action there were the indications of violence acts. Furthermore, the result also showed how African-American slaves react to these rejective behaviors that they experienced.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the portrayal of racial discrimination as shown in Solomon and Patsey characters of 12 Years A Slave movie. In order to do so, this study used Allport’s theory of intentional, explicit discrimination focusing on several types of racial discrimination such as verbal antagonism, avoidance, segregation, physical attacks, and extermination. The data used in this study were words in forms of narration, dialogue, and action related to the portrayal of racial discrimination towards Solomon and Patsey characters that were taken from 12 Years A Slave movie script. This study showed that the portrayal of racial discrimination as shown in Solomon and Patsey characters of 12 Years A Slave movie was classified into five types of intentional, explicit discrimination behaviours such as verbal antagonism, avoidance, segregation, physical attacks, and extermination. On one hand, the portrayal of racial discrimination as shown in Solomon character was included as verbal antagonism, avoidance, segregation, physical attacks, and extermination. On the other hand, the portrayal as shown in Patsey character was a bit different since Patsey did not experience any segregation treatment. This study concluded the portrayal of racial discrimination as shown in Solomon and Patsey characters occured as the result of white supremacy ideology as the basis thinking and belief of most white characters in the movie.

Abstract

Gaya bahasa merupakan salah satu unsur yang sangat penting untuk meningkatkan kualitas keindahan dalam sebuah tulisan. Penggunaan gaya bahasa yang terdapat dalam majalah juga mampu menambah nilai dalam sebuah informasi yang dapat menarik minat baca masyarakat, khususnya pada majalah National Geographic Indonesia edisi Juli sampai Desember 2018, memuat berbagai informasi dari berbagai belahan dunia. Penelitian ini ditujukan pada beberapa topik konten lokal yang berasal dari Indonesia. Rumusan masalah penelitian ini ialah (1) jenis gaya bahasa, dan (2) makna gaya bahasa. Penelitian ini termasuk ke dalam jenis penelitian kepustakaan dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini berupa kalimat yang mengandung gaya bahasa. Data diperoleh dengan teknik pengumpulan data yaitu baca dan catat menggunakan instrument berupa kartu data. Teknik analisis data menggunakan tiga alur, yaitu reduksi data, penyajian data dan penarikan simpulan. Simpulan dalam penelitian ini ialah majalah National Geographic Indonesia mempergunakan berbagai macam majas atau gaya bahasa. Jenis gaya bahasa diklasifikasikan menurut teori stilistika dari Tarigan. Gaya bahasa perbandingan jenis yang ditemukan meliputi, perumpamaan, metafora, personifikasi, pleonasme, perifrasis, prolepsis dan koreksio. Gaya bahasa pertentangan meliputi hiperbola, litotes, ironi, oksimoron, paranomasia, satire, paradoks, apostrof, hipalase, dan sarkasme. Gaya bahasa pertautan meliputi metonomia, eufimisme, epitet, antonomasia, erotesis, dan asidenton. Serta, gaya bahasa perulangan meliputi aliterasi dan epizeukis. Secara keseluruham, penggunaan gaya bahasa yang paling dominan adalah gaya bahasa perbandingan yang berjenis metafora. Penggunaan gaya bahasa dalam majalah National Geographic Indonesia ini juga menimbulkan berbagai macam makna yang disesuaikan dengan konteksnya, makna dari gaya bahasa tersebut ditimbulkan secara implisit dan eksplisit. Makna implisit merupakan makna yang ditunjukkan secara tersirat untuk mengungkapkan gagasan yang tersembunyi melalui manipulasi bahasa, seperti metafora, personifikasi hiperbola, litotes, ironi, satire, hipalase, metonomia, epitet, erotesis. Adapun makna eksplisit merupakan makna yang ditunjukkan secara tersurat, sebab gagasannya sudah tertera dengan jelas dalam kalimat yang disampaikan, seperti perumpamaan, pleonasme, perifrasis, prolepsis, koreksio, oksimoron, paranomasia, paradoks, apostrof, sarkasme, eufimisme, antonomasia, asindenton, aliterasi dan epizeukis.

Abstract

The formulation of the problem in this study are (1) what is the form of the mantra in the tradition of the Dayak Belusu wedding Minuman Pengasih? (2) what is the function of the mantra contained in the tradition of the Dayak Belusu tribe wedding Minuman Pengasih? The research objectives were (1) to describe the form of the mantra in the tradition of the Dayak Belusu Minuman Pengasih  (2) to describe the function of the mantra contained in the tradition of the Dayak Belusu wedding Minuman Pengasih. The type of research used in this research is field research with a qualitative descriptive approach. The data used in this research is the mantra on the tradition of minuman pengasih in the Dayak Belusu tribal marriage, while the data sources in this study were obtained from informants. Data collection techniques used in this study include: observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique used in the research used qualitative analysis techniques, namely: (1) data collection, (2) data transcript, (3) transliteration, (4) drawing conclusions. The results of the analysis of the form of the mantra in the tradition of loving drink in Belusu tribal weddings are a form of prayer to the spirits of the ancestors and the function of the mantra to keep things away from bad things, so that the Belusu community events run smoothly and remain harmonious.
