Abstract

The material in chemistry subjects can be fully understood if the learning emphasizes the macroscopic, sub-microscopic and symbolic levels and links the three levels. The material for electrolyte and non-electrolyte solutions contains abstract concepts. Students only understand concepts that exist macroscopically and memorize concepts sub-microscopically or symbolically on the material, resulting in students having difficulty understanding the material. This study aims to describe the understanding of students' multi-representation of chemistry on the material of electrolyte and non-electrolyte solutions for class X MAN 2 Kota Padang. The research method used is descriptive quantitative. Samples were taken randomly, namely random sampling for class X IPA 6 as many as 34 samples. The instruments used are descriptive tests and interviews, the questions given include 3 levels of representation using Miles & Huberman data analysis techniques and data processing with Microsoft Excel. The results showed that 53% of students could connect the three levels of chemical representation of 6 questions, 44% of students could connect the three levels with 5 questions out of 6 questions and only 3% of students could connect the three levels with 3 questions out of 6 questions. The average understanding of the highest representation is on macroscopic representation because 98% of the number of students who have a very good understanding category, while at the sub-microscopic level only 9% of the number of students who have very good understanding category, and at the symbolic level 44% of the number of students who have very good understanding category.

Abstract

The Covid-19 virus in Indonesia has caused face-to-face learning switching to online learning. In the 2013 curriculum there is skill competency, so that in learning chemistry to achieve that, practicum activities are carried out at home and environmentally friendly. This research is an R & D (Research and Development) aimed to knowing the level of validity and knowing response of students to an electronic practicum guide based on green chemistry with the learning cycle-7e learning model on acid-base material. The development and research procedure uses the ADDIE model, due to the limited time the stages carried out are ADD (Analysis, Design, and Developme). The study involved four validators, namely one media expert validator, one language validator, and two material expert validators. The trials carried out are one to one and small group. The subjects were students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang. Data collection instruments used validation sheets and student response questionnaires. Data analysis used qualitative and quantitative analysis. The results of this study indicate that the green chemistry-based electronic practicum guide with the learning cycle-7e learning model on acid-base material is very valid based on the validation results of material, media, and language experts with an average percentage obtained of 83.5%. The students' responses were categorized as very good, where in the one-to-one trial percentage is 98.6% in the very good category, in the small group trial the percentage is 95.2% in the very good category.

Abstract

Practical activities during the covid pandemic are difficult to do because all learning has turned to online learning. So that students are required to carry out independent practicum at home, even though laboratory equipment and materials are quite expensive and difficult to obtain. A breakthrough is needed so that the practicum can still be carried out. One of them is independent practicum using simple equipment and materials. Independent practicum is implemented in basic chemistry courses during the odd semester. However, reflection on the practicum is needed to identify motivation and an opinion from student. The research design used was descriptive qualitative research. The research was conducted on students of the Chemical Education Study Program, University of Lampung. Data was collected by using a questionnaire through a Mentimeter. The results showed that (1) students were highly motivated to participate in independent practicum because it was interesting, (2) students' perception of independent practicum is very good, this is shown by the number of students who are helped in understanding the concept of chemistry after doing independent practicum, (3) the obstacle experienced by students during independent practicum is the difficulty of signaling in some areas which causes the upload of independent practicum videos to be often late. This research is relevant and can be a practical breakthrough for both lecturers and teachers who have limited laboratory equipment and materials by loosening the collecting of practicum videos.

Abstract

Scientific argumentation is a critical part of scientific practice that should be learned by learner in the science classroom. Scientific argumentation can deepen students' understanding and make their reasoning apparent. Integrating argumentation in instruction necessitates the availability of assessment instruments. This study aims to develop a scientific argumentation test and investigate students' argumentation skills on reaction rates. This study applied a research and development design to develop a scientific argumentation test followed by a survey on students' scientific argumentation skills. The analysis of the validity and reliability of the scientific argumentation test involved three experts and 199 high school students. Meanwhile, the survey on students' scientific argumentation skills involved 86 high school students. The expert panel gave an average score of 94.8% (very worthy) to the developed scientific argumentation test. The empirical analysis of the test shows that all items (9 essay items) were valid with reliability of 0.777. The survey showed that students' abilities in: making claims were moderate (56.59%), providing evidence were very weak (18.35%), and making explanations were also very weak (14.21%). The results of this study imply that learning strategies that can improve students' scientific argumentation skills are needed.
