ABSTRACT: This article is concerned with the politic participation of West Sumatra people in the dynamic of Indonesian democracy. At the beginning of independence, there have seven political parties which were established in West Sumatra namely PERTI, MTKAAM, PKI Lokal Islami, MASYUMI, PNI and PSI. The establishment of the political parties is the reaction of local society to Government’s Advice on 3 November 1945 about the making of party to struggle for independence. Politic participation through political parties is very influential on the political development in West Sumatra. The activist of political parties to reform the leadership of “nagari” (village) government, so that the role of “penghulu” (adat leaders) is liquidated in government affair because the people doubt of their nationalism. Their position replaced by the activist of the party in each “nagari”. The liberty in the term of Liberal Democracy to result in a bad relationship between West Sumatra and central government, develop to become the movement of PRRI (1958-1961). Under the Guided Democracy of Soekarno (1959-1965) and the New Order of Soeharto (1966-1998), the politic participation is very limited in social life, include on the people of West Sumatra. Abstract

ABSTRACT: In the early eighteenth century, there were two revolutions changing the socio-cultural pattern of the mankind. Those were the American Revolution in 1776, and the French revolution in 1789. The later revolution had shaped Thomas Stamford Raffles’ mind that the emerging of the middle-class forced the aristocrats to agree the limitation of power through constitution. Thomas Stamford Raffles was an actor and a product of the late eighteenth century humanitarian movement. His way of thinking was inspired by the French enlightenment. It is believed that justice is difficult to be raised. However, many thinkers seem to argue that the state would guarantee the appearance of justice, but they are failed to see the practice of justice. One of the influenced actors is Thomas Stamford Raffles. He was led by the humanitarian movement of his age. He pursued the spirit and executed it as the official policies. Those policies were revision of Dutch and King of Nusantara (Indonesian archipelago)’s treaties leading to the direct rule system; the practice of land-rent system; and re-organization of administration. This study used library research. This study had used some steps, mainly in reading critically and making a note. It considered all Thomas Stamford Raffles’ primary sources, which were available in online and offline library. In addition, this study analysed and compared the findings with others’ findings. This study will focus on the third policy. This tends to elaborate the practice of jury system and the court of circuit.KEY WORDS: Legal History; Justice; Thomas Stamford Raffles; British Colonization; Humanism.About the Author: Daya Negri Wijaya is a Lecturer at the History Department, Faculty of Literature UM (State University of Malang), Jalan Semarang No.5, Malang City, East Java, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: In 1641, the Dutch seized Malacca from Portuguese hands. The Portuguese society, which is left now, occupied the territory of “Kampung” (Village) of Portuguese on the west coast of Malacca. VOC (Vereenigde Oost Indische Compagnie) has then brought some of them to Batavia to be employed as unskilled laborers and soldiers. At Batavia (now Jakarta), they were forced to convert to Protestantism and the service was held at the Portuguese church outside of the city walls. To defend from attacks of Bantam Sultanate, some of them were placed in Tugu Village, outside of Batavia (now North Jakarta). They form an exclusive community by maintaining the Portuguese Creole language. This paper discusses the historical and linguistics of the Potuguese Creole by a small portion of the population, especially by older generations which were decreased naturally. They had to master the Indonesian language very well since the children entered the Elementary School. From the data contained inscriptions on the tombstone monument next to the church, seen their family names, for example Quiko, Abrahams, Michiels, Andries, Browne, Salomons, and others seem Portuguese influence. Abstract

ABSTRACT: The focus of this study is to unravel the conflict between British and Japanese investments in the Federation of Malaya from 1946 to 1956, after the Second World War. The method used in this study is based on the method of observation of the resources available in Libraries and the National Archives of Malaysia. After Japans defeat in the Second World War, on 15 August 1945, between the months of September 1945 until 1 April 1946, the British administration of Malaya back through the BMA (British Military Administration) with all Japanese assets in Malaya was placed under the British Custodian of Enemy Property. Meanwhile, the priority of the United States of America policy after the Second World War was to stop the spread of Communism during the Cold War. The United States of America saw Southeast Asia as a natural market for Japanese goods and a source of raw materials for the Japanese industry, also as an alternative to relations with the Chinese Communist government. The Federation of Malaya’s iron ore mining is considered important to the United States of America effort in connecting Japan and Southeast Asia. Although it led to friction with the British, but their main interest is to overcome the Communist threat in the region, especially from China. Japan did not indicate significant interest on the question of retrieving the whole importance of their economies to the extent as it did before the war, there was only an effort to recover their position in the Federation of Malaya’s iron ore mining.KEY WORDS: United States of America, British, economics interests, Japan, and Federation of Malaya government.    About the Authors: Dr. Uqbah Iqbal is a Research Scholar and Alumnus of School of History, Politics and Strategy, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities UKM (National University of Malaysia), UKM Campus, 43650 Bangi, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Civilized society is those who appreciate and maintain their heritage which is, then, manifested into a set of local wisdom. Local wisdom is an activity containing way of life and knowledge undertaken by local people to answer problems in fulfilling their necessity. The socio-cultural condition of Sundanese people at the time “Amanat Galunggung” (Message of Galunggung) was produced, which include religious, socio-economic, and cultural conditions, is precisely captured by the text. Through its discursive strategies, the text presents that the religious life of Sundanese people at that time is mostly influenced by Hinduism. In economic side, people of Sunda generally work in farming field. Meanwhile, the cultural condition indicates the pluralistic life of Sundanese community. The present research’s effort is to examine the representation of Sundanese local wisdom in an old text entitled “Amanat Galunggung” which was written in 16th century. Framed generally by CDA (Critical Discourse Analysis) theory and method, and particularly DHA (Discourse Historical Approach), the examination is focused on observing the five discursive strategies in micro-analysis under DHA, which includes strategies of nomination, predication, argumentation, perspectivation, and mitigation. The discussion also highlights the socio-cultural background of Sundanese people in that period to see its influence on the content of the text itself. Thus, the integration of two disciplinaries of historical study and linguistics is well-achieved. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Traditionally, the sea and ocean are the source of inspiration for new ideas, aspirations, language, ethnic dignity, and truth. By understanding and acknowledging the roles and functions of these two, i.e. the sea and ocean, in all aspects of life, the ancient Malays have employed maritime elements in their daily life and this has enriched their traditional intellectuality. This article attempts to illustrate the culturing of maritime elements in the Malay proverbs that show the personality, intellectuality, and understanding of the Malay people on the maritime aspects, which at the end enhances the Malay civilization. This preliminary observation also found that the existence and culturing of the maritime-based-proverbs illustrate the close relationship between the traditional Malays and oceans as well as lands. Besides that, the importance of the oceans to the development of Malay civilization in the 18th and 19th centuries has also influenced them in making these proverbs at that time. Finally, the use of proverbs in conversation by the Malay community can avoid misunderstandings and strengthen the bond among them.
