Abstract

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this historical study is to investigate the relationship among visual metaphor in editorial cartoon with political and cultural situations at the Parliamentary Democracy period in Indonesia (1950-1959). As a new nation-state, Indonesia had just begun to experiment with democracy. The multi-party parliamentary system with symmetrical power sharing had triggered severe competition among political parties which tried to bring down each other. This feud was clearly and openly written in polemics found in many newspapers in Jakarta at that time. In such an atmosphere could observe the role of editorial cartoon be easily. This political openness could, then, stimulate a rich variety of visual metaphorical patterns and editorial cartoon emotive attitudes. This research is using qualitative method, analyzing artefacts by surfing the cultural network encapsulating them. This study presents empirical evidence showing a strong relationship between the editorial cartoons and the political side the media is taking, along with the political and cultural situations which support them. A political symmetric situation gives a free opportunity to the editorial cartoon to express metaphor with an open emotive attitude. KEY WORDS: Newspaper, Parliamentary Democracy period in Indonesia, editorial cartoon, visual metaphor, meaning, and emotive aspect.About the Author: Dr. Ir. Abstract

ABSTRACT: “Keroncong” music, as a treasure of Indonesian national music, has been experiencing a long phase since the arrival of the Moorish as Portuguese slaves to Indonesia in the 16th century. In the long period, the “keroncong” music then, as other kinds of traditional music, has to face industry music, especially Western music. The power of financial capital, the superiority of technology, and the sophistication of marketing ground down traditional music. This paper tries to analyze the “keroncong” music in Indonesia that can still be maintained or popularized through various ways and by making a proper media of promotion such as through television and radio so that society are familiar to “keroncong” music. Therefore, “keroncong” artists should make innovations or changes that can attract people’s interest to “keroncong” music. They should create song lyrics that reflec the life of society or take themes that is in accordance to their period. Although there are many new “keroncong” compositions, but the new “keroncong” songs are rarely published in media. The emergence of “campursari” in the 1990s, pioneered by Manthous, brought a power of interest and became a magnet for fans and activists of “keroncong” and traditional music so that they appreciate the music and many groups of “campursari” music which is rooted from “keroncong” grew. The same effort was done by Didi Kempot and Koko Thole who has given new colour to “keroncong” music. They made efforts to spread “keroncong” music to a wide range of society and also develop the music itself.      KEY WORDS: “Keroncong” music, time of revolution, Indonesian society, “campursari” music, and innovations in traditional music.   About the Authors: Linda Sunarti, M.Hum. and Wiwin Triwinarti, M.A. are Lecturers at the Department of History, Faculty of Humanities UI (University of Indonesia), UI Campus Depok, West Java, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Sufi tradition was born at the instigation of Islamic spirituality and reflects a new social and cultural forces in the classical period of Islam. Its configuration is not release from reality of Sufi’s “zawiyah” as a center of their development. The presence of Sufi institutions seems to be a counterweight to the political hegemony of the caliphs Amawiyah. The role and function of “zawiyah” from time to time have ups and downs, but its existence was maintaining intellectual and spiritual development of the Muslims. One of the unique tradition of them is writing the book on “Manaqib” or Sufi hagiography as the embodiment of ideals, intellectual, and “tarekat” (Sufi order) institutional doctrine as a reflection cohesiveness students in raising the role of teaching and Sufis figure as well as being a great effort for the development of Islamic historiography. And proved to be much more Sufi groups that maintain the life of such, they are not crystallized in the form of a dynasty, but more concrete in the form of social religious-institutions in areas of the East Central and parts of Asia, or in the form of religious schools in the Indonesian archipelago region. Specifically, Sufism in Medieval showed very strong social forces, especially in the pockets of rural and urban areas in a number of cities of Islam. Moreover, the Islamic tradition, mosque, and Islamic boarding school in “Nusantara” (Indonesian archipelago) are the part of the network of Sufi “zawiyah” tradition that has long flourished in the Middle East at the middle period in the history of Islam.KEY WORDS: Civilization; Sufi Zawiyah; Social-Political Condition; Islamic Tradition; Historiography.About the Author: Dr. Ajid Thohir is a Lecturer at the Department of History and Civilization of Islam, Faculty of Adab and Humanities UIN SGD (State Islamic University, Sunan Gunung Djati) Bandung, Jalan A.H. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Radicalism is not an entirely new issue in the history of the Islam. It has been an issue raised by the Khawarij group and now re-surfaced in the form of the neo-Khawarij. However, it is not quite appropriate to quickly jump to the conclusion that all Islamic movements are similar to Khawarij. Some of the concepts used by these movements, such as Hakimiyyah liLlah, have been discussed by earlier scholars before. However, many factors have emerged in recent years that have caused the interpretation to deviate from the truth. While, it is obvious that there are some similarities between PAS in Malaysia and the Ikhwan in Egypt, in terms of their radical approach and inspiration, the latter is not directly involved in the militant movement such as the Takfir wa al-Hijrah and al-Maunah. This paper tries to address this issue by first looking at the social and religious background leading to the rise of radical movements in Islam in the Middle East. It will also examine the main concern of these movements and in what way they have influenced the thinking of some Islamic movements in Malaysia.    KEY WORDS: Islamic movement, Middle East, extremist thought, Malaysia, modern society, and globalization.===About the Author: Dr. Badlihisham Mohd Nasir is a Lecturer at the Department of Dakwah and Leadership, Faculty of Islamic Studies UKM (National University of Malaysia), 43600 UKM Bangi, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Java, where the VOC (Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie or East Hindia-Dutch Company) — later a colonial state — established its base, was undoubtedly one of the most important regions in East Indies, which attracted colonial era of Europeans, not to mention those who relied on visual images, especially in 19th century. Secondly, the significance of Priangan, a mountainous region in western part of Java, in the eyes of 19th century European, who traveled and conducted scientific investigations in the region so that the mountain region became a subject of various images and narratives. Thirdly, the role of Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn (1809-1864), probably the most important researcher and explorer of Java at the time, in the production of visual images and travelogues of the land.KEY WORDS: Dutch East Indies, Java island, Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn, history, Priangan, European society, and visual representation.  About the Authors: H.W. Abstract

ABSTRACT: During 15 centuries, Islam has always met with many cultures, even Moslems who come from different ethnic and social backgrounds have made Islam a multicultural reality. Therefore, the paradigm of humanity science will be always actual to understand the reality of Islamic society in the context of the integration amongs historical religious and cultural perspectives. The three perspectives can become on epistemology of "multicultural Islam". Its methodology can be developed into a variety of Islamic objects. In this paper, the epistemology will be more focused on history and culture. Both are explored in a religious context of Islam. The use of this perspective is based on the development of Islam in Indonesia and Sufism on local communities in particular. As an outline of the development, as follow: firstly, the development of Islam always adapts to the local culture; secondly, ongoing local Islamic construct and it is also changing due to the influence of Western culture and the reform in the Islamic world; and thirdly, continuing encounters of contemporary Islamic diversity, due to the development of modern multiculturalism. In addition, the integration of perspectives in explaining Islam can produce knowledge of "historical-multicultural", that is Islam in reality, difference, and diversity that occurs and is recognized by the Moslem communities within a certain time. Furthermore, the knowledges based on "historical-multicultural" can also be used as a discourse for solving human problems that always arise in the present and future days.
