Abstract

Water catchment areas are very important to reduce surface runoff that enters the drainage, but the rise of housing development results in damage to the water catchment area. Development of settlements, offices, educational buildings, and other buildings often do not pay attention to areas that should be open green land. Land cover causes a large infiltration to be reduced when it rains, thereby increasing surface runoff which can result in inundation or flooding. One village that is increasingly crowded with settlements is the right sunggal village in the Deli Serdang district. The main problem in the village of Sunggal Kanan, especially the Gusti Wijaya University Foundation, which is a service partner, is the lack of open land in the foundation complex as a water catchment zone. The solution offered in this program is in the form of infiltration well construction. This method utilizes wells as a water catchment container when it rains. With this infiltration well, rainwater runoff can be reduced.

Abstract

Regemuk Village has the potential to be developed into a new tourist destination village. The village which is located along the coastline of Deli Serdang Regency is geographically the closest village to Medan City and the location is adjacent to Kuala Namu Airport. One of the advantages of this village is the presence of a stretch of mangrove forest which is still quite good along the 7 km coastline. The development of the village into one of the beach tourism destinations has been a long-term discourse, but until now it has not been implemented. To realize this, it is necessary to explore the development of supporting facilities in order to initiate the development of the village into a tourist destination mangrove tourism area. Seeing this reality, the USU PPM Implementation Team through the Professor Serves Program Scheme helped community problems by developing mangrove forest areas and providing supporting facilities, namely beach tourism park umbrellas. The existence of this facility is expected to help increase the carrying capacity of this newly formed tourist site. This program will encourage the spirit of the realization of mangrove tourism areas and be able to produce other downstream tourism products.

Abstract

The "Melati" Joint Business Group is a group of women's skills including the "Meronce" craftsmanship whose members consist of women in Dolok Merawan Village, Dolok Merawan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra Province. The results of the 2018 community service program for this business group have shown quite encouraging results, in which this joint business group has been able to increase its organizational capacity and be able to improve its "meronce" handicraft skills by producing products of economic value. However, the "Melati" Joint Business Group is experiencing difficulties in marketing its handicraft products, because so far the method of selling products is still conventional, and they have not been able to market their products online. This community service activity aims to train the "Melati" Joint Business Group in relation to the online marketing strategy of the "Meronce" handicraft products. To achieve these objectives, the service methods used are lecture and discussion techniques, training on the promotion of handicraft products online by providing promotional tools, namely smartphones and equipment, and strengthening group organizations with on-line marketing strategy training. The results of the service activities show that KUBE Melati members already have the ability to market their craft products online such as Facebook and WhatsApp, and there are even consumers who order online. This is enough to motivate them so that they do not feel left behind by the progress of Information Technology in marketing their handicrafts. But they still hope that the service team can provide assistance for them in accordance with the progress of the Information Technology

Abstract

Indonesian learners when learning English as a foreign language often make mistakes in collocation. The collocation mistakes may be due to the ignorance of collocation and the transfer of collocation of their first language, Indonesian to English. The aim of the present study is to find out the command of English collocation by the Third Year students of SMA Bhayangkari 1, Medan. Before teaching them English collocation, a pretest on collocation is administered and after the teaching of collocation a post-test on collocation is administered in order to find out if their command of collocation increases. Findings show that there is an increase of score 4.425. The average score of the students’ command of collocation is 65.78 out of 100 as the maximum score. It can be concluded that the students’ mastery of collocation is still moderate. Therefore an extensive teaching of collocation for the students is still needed.
