Abstract

The research attempts to examine language shifts that occur in the Banjar community using an ecolinguistics approach. The language shifts studied were limited to the vocabulary shift commonly used in the social interactions of everyday Banjar people. The data gathering was using interviewing and documentation techniques. Interviews are semi-structured interviews. The interview was on respondents spread across various cities in South Kalimantan, where the Banjar language is the language of community communication. Due to the pandemic, researchers enlisted the help of students in their respective hometowns to collect data with protocols that the research team had established. The data was the subject of reduction, organized by category of word classes and reasons for shifts, analysed based on the three-dimensional social theory of language praxis. The three practical social dimensions of language are the ideological, social, and biological dimensions. The research expects to be a reference for Banjar language participation efforts.

Abstract

Being migrant workers means being ready to face and accept the challenge of cultural differences in the host country. Bridging in two different cultures, this involves adaptation. However, the process of adaptation—welcoming, embracing and finally accepting—to the host country’s culture is not easy. Tearing between the two different worlds, their migrant experience can be torturous. These migrants are not only transitioning into a new life in the host country but also translating a new culture in their new life phase. Such experiences, then, open up a space—an interstice—which enables these migrants to survive in the new life, the migrant life. Taking, observing, and interpreting the stories of the Indonesian domestic workers (IDWs) in Hong Kong, I argue that these women are able to not only translate but also adoptthe new culture of the host country through assimilation, acculturation and the invention of a common ground, a third space in which they are able to feel like home in the host country. In addition, the process of acculturation involves negotiation which allows IDWs to find a middle ground between two different cultures and the third space illustrates their adjustment in bridging and crossing the cultural border between the home and the host countries. Between Indonesia and Hong Kong, Victoria Park arises as a comfort space which can ease the pain of being stranger in Hong Kong.

Abstract

Language is used by humans to communicate and express their ideas as well as feelings, which can be done through literary works such as a song. A song conveys an idea and/or a feeling through its lyrics. In a song, the lyrics may contain various metaphors that carry contextual meaning in order to convey a feeling and emotion. Thus, people may have different interpretation of a song. This applies to all kinds of songs, such as the longer version of Taylor Swift's song, "All Too Well". Therefore, this research will discuss 1) the meaning of the metaphors in the song to help create a better storytelling and 2) the type of metaphors used in the song. The metaphors found in this song will be analysed using Ullman’s theory on metaphors. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method because this research will describe the results of this research instead of depict them through numbers. The data in this research is the metaphors found in the song, and the sampling technique for this data is purposive sampling. This technique is chosen because this technique help supplies the data needed to answer the problems of this research. In relations to the aims of this research, there are 26 metaphors found to be used in this song; 3 anthropomorphic metaphors, 1 animal metaphor, 19 concrete to abstract metaphors, and 3 synesthetic metaphors. The use of these metaphors is intended not only so the story in the song can be better delivered to the listeners to make it more captivating, but also for the listeners to be able to understand the depths of emotions the song-writer wished to convey in the song. Therefore, the metaphors have significant influences in the act of storytelling through the lyrics of the song.

Abstract

The study objectives are to recognize the application of Project-based Learning (PBL) and utilization of ORAI, which can develop student’s speaking skills and immensity of the progress in recount text for tenth grade in science class 1 at MAN Sukoharjo. The students were in the second semester in Academic Year 2018/2019. More than 40 % students of tenth grade in science class 1 at MAN Sukoharjo encountered obstacles in English learning, especially in conveying recount. The data collection techniques in this research were document collection, observation, interview, and test. The data validity of this study used the triangulation method, which means that there were more techniques and observations of treatment in collecting the data. The finding reveals that the application of PBL and utilization of ORAI can improve student’s speaking skills especially in conveying recount. The average of students’ scores is found to be significantly different from each cycle. The pre-treatment average score is 69.33, the first cycle score is 72.66, and the second cycle score is 77.33. It means that almost all students can reach KKM (minimum completeness criteria). In conclusion, PBL and ORAI can be applied to enhance students’ speaking skills.
