Abstract

Nosocomial infections remain a major global health concern, particularly in developing countries, with Acinetobacter baumannii recognized as an important carbapenem-resistant pathogen. This study aimed to detect the presence of the OXA-24 and IMP-1 genes in carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii isolates obtained from a regional hospital in Surakarta. A descriptive observational study was conducted on 10 clinical isolates using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis. DNA extraction was performed, followed by qualitative and quantitative DNA assessment, and PCR amplification targeting the OXA-24 gene (246 bp) and IMP-1 gene (172 bp). The results showed that no specific amplification bands corresponding to the expected target sizes were observed for either the OXA-24 or IMP-1 genes. It can be concluded that the OXA-24 and IMP-1 genes were not detected in the examined isolates. These findings suggest the possibility of alternative carbapenem-resistance mechanisms in the isolates and highlight the need for further studies involving optimization of primer design, PCR conditions, and DNA sequencing to confirm the genetic profile of resistance determinants.

Abstract

Light and temperature are major environmental factors that shape plant growth and development through interconnected signaling networks. Photomorphogenesis is regulated by photoreceptors, whereas thermomorphogenesis represents developmental adjustment to elevated ambient temperature. This narrative literature review synthesized peer-reviewed studies published from 2002 to 2025 and retrieved from PubMed, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, Wiley Online Library, Nature, MDPI, Frontiers, and Google Scholar based on their relevance to photoreceptor-mediated light and temperature signaling. The review compares the roles of phytochrome, cryptochrome, phototropin, and UVR8 in photomorphogenesis, thermomorphogenesis, and thermosensing. Available evidence identifies phytochrome, particularly PhyB, as the best-established direct thermosensor, whereas cryptochrome modulates temperature-responsive growth through PIF4. Phototropin conveys temperature information through the lifetime of its photoactivated LOV state in specific physiological responses, while UVR8 acts predominantly as a negative regulator of thermomorphogenesis. Crosstalk among these photoreceptors converges on PIFs, COP1/SPA, HY5, ELF3, and auxin-related pathways. This integrated signaling framework coordinates developmental plasticity, stress acclimation, and vegetative and reproductive performance under fluctuating environments.

Abstract

This study evaluated the effect of Modified Cassava Flour (MOCAF) substitution on the stability of encapsulated vitamin C (ascorbic acid), crude fiber content, and color index of starch-based composite noodles. Vitamin C was encapsulated using a maltodextrin–CMC matrix (18.2:1.8%) via freeze-drying and incorporated into noodles with varying wheat-to-MOCAF ratios: MCF00 (100:0), MCF01 (90:10), MCF02 (70:30), and MCF03 (50:50). These were compared with Control 1 (unfortified) and Control 2 (fortified with non-encapsulated vitamin C). Encapsulation significantly improved vitamin C retention, reaching 0.32–0.38 mg/g, approximately twofold higher than the non-encapsulated control (0.15 mg/g). Thermal processing caused a marked decline in the Modified Noodle Color Index (NCIm) of Control 2 (62.67 to 51.44), likely due to Maillard-like browning reactions. In contrast, noodles with encapsulated vitamin C maintained a stable color (NCIm 61.06 to 63.44). Increasing MOCAF substitution significantly enhanced crude fiber content (up to 4.97% in MCF03) and improved noodle lightness (L*). Overall, the maltodextrin–CMC system effectively protected vitamin C from thermal degradation, regardless of starch matrix variation. Further studies are recommended to investigate shelf-life stability and in vitro release of vitamin C in the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract

Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection, and antimicrobial resistance may compromise empirical therapy. This retrospective descriptive study described the distribution of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus and selected beta-lactam susceptibility patterns among patients with suspected sepsis at RSUD Ir. Soekarno Sukoharjo during 2024–2025. Secondary data from blood, urine, sputum, and pus cultures, including antimicrobial susceptibility testing using the VITEK 2 Compact system, were analyzed descriptively as counts and proportions. Escherichia coli accounted for five isolates in 2024 and four in 2025, whereas Staphylococcus aureus was represented by one isolate in 2024 and was not identified in 2025. Resistance to ceftazidime was observed in 3/5 (60.0%) Escherichia coli isolates in 2024 and 3/4 (75.0%) in 2025, while ceftriaxone resistance occurred in 4/5 (80.0%) and 3/4 (75.0%), respectively. The single Staphylococcus aureus isolate was resistant to oxacillin and phenotypically consistent with MRSA. These findings indicate frequent resistance to third-generation cephalosporins among a small number of Escherichia coli isolates. Interpretation should be cautious because of the limited number of isolates and the absence of confirmatory ESBL or MRSA testing data.

Abstract

Understanding food ecology is essential for conserving wildlife because feeding resources directly influence species survival, habitat use, and ecosystem functioning. This information is particularly important for endemic and habitat-dependent birds in tropical dry forests, where environmental changes may threaten food availability. This study aimed to analyze the feeding habits of P. buceroides in Taman Buru Pulau Moyo and evaluate their implications for conservation management. Field observations were conducted at four habitat types: primary forest, forest edge, plantation area, and savanna. Vegetation sampling was performed using 50 m × 50 m quadrats to document plant species composition and potential food resources. Data collected included vegetation characteristics, food plant species, feeding frequency, and resource utilization by P. buceroides. Vegetation data were analyzed using the Important Value Index (IVI), while feeding behavior and dietary preferences were assessed descriptively and qualitatively. The results showed that P. buceroides primarily feeds on nectar and fruits, with insects serving as supplementary food sources. Several flowering and fruit-bearing plant species were identified as key food resources supporting the species within the tropical dry forest ecosystem of Pulau Moyo. Feeding activities varied temporally, reflecting fluctuations in resource availability across habitats and observation periods. These findings highlight the ecological dependence of P. buceroides on specific plant species and emphasize the importance of maintaining habitat heterogeneity and protecting critical food plants. The study provides baseline ecological information that can support habitat management and conservation strategies for sustaining P. buceroides populations in Pulau Moyo and similar tropical dry forest ecosystems.

Abstract

Early marriage is a reproductive health issue associated with an increased risk of maternal complications and reproductive immune system disorders in adolescent females. The immaturity of reproductive organs and the immune system at a young age increases susceptibility to infections, anemia, preeclampsia, and preterm birth. This article aims to examine the relationship between early marriage and reproductive immune dysregulation from the perspective of reproductive immunology. The method used was a systematic literature review through the analysis of various scientific publications related to reproductive health, adolescent pregnancy complications, and immune responses. The findings indicate that early marriage is associated with disturbances in both innate and adaptive immunity, including alterations in the activity of T cells, B cells, macrophages, and natural killer cells, which play essential roles in maintaining immunological tolerance during pregnancy. This immune dysregulation increases the risk of sexually transmitted infections, obstetric complications, and impaired fetal and neonatal growth. Furthermore, malnutrition and psychosocial stress among adolescents may further worsen immune function and maternal health. Therefore, early marriage represents an important risk factor for reproductive immune disorders and maternal-child health problems.

Abstract

Alcohol consumption is a public health problem that is still a concern in various countries. One type of alcoholic beverage commonly found in the Sukoharjo area is ciu. This study aims to determine the effect of giving traditional alcohol ciu on the Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) value and the number of neutrophils in male white rats (Rattus norvegicus). The study used a quasy-experiment/post test design with 27 male white rats of the Wistar strain divided into three groups, namely the 0 ml ciu control group, the 2 ml ciu treatment group, and the 4 ml ciu treatment group for 14 days. Then the MCV value was examined using the Abacus 3CT Hematology Analyzer and the number of neutrophils was calculated using the diff count method. Then, the data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, Levene's test, and One-Way ANOVA test. The outcomes revealed that there were normal and less than normal MCV values and there was an increase in the number of neutrophils. The conclusion of this investgation is that there is no effect of giving traditional ciu alcohol to male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) on MCV values and neutrophil counts.

Abstract

The utilization of livestock manure as an organic fertilizer has gained increasing attention as a sustainable strategy to improve soil fertility, reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers, and support environmentally friendly agricultural production. Livestock feces contain essential nutrients that can enhance soil nutrient availability and contribute to improved crop growth. Therefore, optimizing the processing and application of livestock manure is important to maximize its agronomic value. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different treatments (P1, P2, and P3) on macronutrient content, including Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), and pH values. The research was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of three treatments with several replications. Data obtained from the experiment were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to determine treatment effects, followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at a 5% significance level to compare differences among treatment means. The results showed that the treatments significantly affected all observed parameters (p < 0.05). Treatment P2 consistently produced the highest macronutrient contents, with mean values of 1.28% for Nitrogen, 1.52% for Phosphorus, and 1.78% for Potassium. In addition, P2 resulted in the highest pH value (8.72), indicating a more favorable condition for nutrient availability. Conversely, treatment P3 exhibited the lowest values for both nutrient content and pH. Duncan’s test further confirmed that treatment P2 differed significantly from the other treatments and demonstrated superior performance across all measured variables. These findings indicate that treatment P2 is the most effective method for enhancing the quality of livestock manure-based organic fertilizer through improved macronutrient content and pH characteristics.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder marked by persistent hyperglycemia, oxidative stress, and inflammation, driving interest in natural alternatives to synthetic antidiabetic drugs such as Peperomia pellucida. This literature review synthesizes evidence from PubMed and Google Scholar (last five years) using the terms “Peperomia pellucida”, “ethanol extract”, and “diabetes mellitus”; included studies were original in vitro, in vivo, or review articles reporting phytochemical profiles, enzyme inhibition assays, glycemic outcomes, pancreatic histopathology, inflammatory markers, or antioxidant activity, while studies lacking primary data or methodological detail were excluded. Descriptive and thematic synthesis of selected papers indicates that P. pellucida consistently contains flavonoids, phenolics, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, and terpenoids, and demonstrates antidiabetic effects via α‑amylase and α‑glucosidase inhibition, reduction of blood glucose in animal models, pancreatic tissue protection, and modulation of proinflammatory cytokines, together with robust free‑radical scavenging antioxidant activity. These findings support the plant’s potential as a phytopharmaceutical candidate; however, to enable clinical translation we recommend standardized extract characterization with marker compounds, dose‑response and pharmacokinetic studies, comprehensive acute and chronic toxicity testing, mechanistic investigations in clinically relevant models, and randomized controlled trials with predefined endpoints, alongside development of quality‑control protocols and formulation studies to determine optimal delivery and dosing.

Abstract

Indonesia’s forest areas are rich in medicinal plant species that have been traditionally used by local communities; however, much of their potential remains undocumented and underutilized. Mount Puntang, Bandung Regency, West Java, is a mountainous forest area with high potential for medicinal plant diversity; however, scientific studies on the identification of species and the pharmacological potential of medicinal plants in this area remain limited. This study aims to identify medicinal plant species in the Mount Puntang area of Bandung Regency. The research was conducted in August 2020 utilizing a descriptive exploratory method. Primary data collection was carried out through fieldwork observations on individual plants in medicinal plant demonstration plots as well as in the home gardens of local residents surrounding the Mount Puntang forest area, supplemented by semi-structured interviews with 20 local informants. Data were analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics. The results showed the presence of 48 medicinal plant species from 29 families. The most dominant family was Acanthaceae, accounting for 10.42%, followed by Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Solanaceae, and Zingiberaceae, each accounting for 6.25%. The plant parts most frequently utilized were leaves (36.78%), roots (16.23%), stems (13.67%), fruits (10.26%), seeds (5.98%), flowers (5.13%), bark (4.27%), rhizomes (4.27%), and tubers (3.42%).
