Abstract

This article discusses the Common Link theory developed by G.H.A. Juynboll in contemporary hadith studies. This theory, which is a development of Joseph Schacht’s ideas, offers a new perspective in hadith studies by questioning the authenticity and transmission mechanisms of hadith, highlighting the role of a central transmitter in the spread of a sanad, who often becomes the starting point in the construction of a narration. Using a literature review approach, this article analyzes the implications of the Common Link theory on the validity of isnads, matn criticism, and the historicity of the Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) hadith, while also applying the theory to specific hadith to demonstrate its practical application. The analysis shows that the Common Link theory has fundamental implications for conventional understandings of the origins and sources of hadith, leading to a reconceptualization of the transmission process and the period of their emergence. Although this theory has been challenged by Muslim scholars such as M.M. Azami—who advocates traditional methods like muqaranah and mu‘aradah—its contribution to contemporary hadith studies cannot be overlooked in shaping a more critical and interdisciplinary approach to hadith literature. The study’s findings suggest that this theory offers a critical framework for evaluating hadith, especially in the context of historical reconstruction and the detection of ideological motives behind their transmission.

Abstract

The issue of gender equality continues to be a topic of concern in religious discourse, particularly in contemporary Islamic studies. Some consider Islamic teachings to be patriarchal and biased against women. This raises critical questions about how hadith are understood and interpreted in the context of gender equality. This study aims to examine the hadith perspective on the issue of gender equality through a qualitative approach based on literature review. Data were collected from major hadith books, classical and contemporary exegetical literature, and related academic research. The analysis was conducted in three stages: content analysis to explore the meaning of hadith, comparative analysis of gender ideology, and interpretive analysis of hadith that contradict the values of gender equality discourse. The results show that many ideas on the issue of gender equality contradict the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad.

Abstract

The Inkarsunnah movement defined as the rejection of Sunah as a legal source in Islam is a significant deviation from the proper methodology of understanding religion. In Indonesia, this ideology has spread through academic and digital channels, rooted in extreme rationalism and historical criticism of hadith. This study aims to trace the ideological roots of Inkarsunnah and analyze the strategic role of Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah in countering its influence. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach and library research method, the findings show that Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah has responded through educational institutions, scholarly publications, and media-based da’wah. These efforts have significantly contributed to preserving the authority of Sunah and protecting Islamic creed. Rejection of Sunah not only undermines Islamic law but also threatens the foundational structure of Islamic civilization. Therefore, strengthening the salafi methodology in education and da’wah is a strategic necessity.

Abstract

The concepts of Wadi’ah and Wakalah are generally referred to in hadith as the foundation for building economic transactions. However, when these concepts are applied in the modern context, many challenges arise, such as changes in social structure, technological advancements, globalization, and the complexity of economic transactions. This study aims to analyze the hadiths that form the basis of the concepts of Wadi’ah and Wakalah historically and to examine how these two concepts can be effectively applied in contemporary economics. Through a literature review method and a descriptive approach, this study uses data sources to analyze hadith related to Wadi’ah and Wakalah and their application in the context of contemporary Islamic economics. The research findings indicate that through historical criticism, it is understood that the application of these hadiths must be adapted to the continuously evolving social and economic context. Ai contextual approach allows for the flexibility in applying the concepts of Wadi’ah and Wakalah to address contemporary economic challenges, including those in the bankng sector, Islamic fintech, investments, and other service industries. The implications of these two concepts emphasize the importance of trust, responsibility, and transparency in creating ethical business practices that align with Sharia principles. By combining Islamic values with modern economic innovations, these concepts offer ethical and just solutions to meet the increasingly complex needs of modern society.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of globalization and migration patterns on the development of regional Hadith studies in the context of the contemporary Muslim world. As the second authoritative source in Islam, Hadith has undergone dynamic processes of transmission, interpretation, and adaptation that vary across different Muslim regions. Using a qualitative approach through literature review and comparative analysis, this research identifies three main patterns emerging as a result of globalization and migration: (1) methodological hybridization in Hadith studies that blends local traditions with transnational approaches; (2) the transformation of Hadith authority from a hierarchical-traditional model to a more complex global network; and (3) the recontextualization of Hadith to address specific socio-cultural challenges in various regions. The findings reveal that globalization and migration have facilitated the exchange of Hadith knowledge across regions, creating a new "geography of Hadith knowledge" that transcends traditional territorial boundaries. However, this study also highlights the tensions between universalizing and particularizing tendencies in regional Hadith studies, where efforts are made to preserve local cultural identities while adopting transnational methodologies. The implications of these findings underscore the need for a new analytical framework in Hadith studies that accommodates spatial-territorial dimensions and the dynamics of knowledge mobility in the global era.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the manuscripts of As-Sunan as-Sughrā and As-Sunan al-Kubrā by al-Imām al-Bayhaqī (d. 458 H), two monumental works in the treasury of Islamic hadith that represent the peak of the development of codification and systematization of hadith-based law in the 5th century H. The study focuses on philological, methodological, and epistemological aspects, including the structure of the compilation, reference sources, and the principles of sanad and matan criticism applied by al-Bayhaqi. The research method used is qualitative through library research, with an approach of classical and comparative manuscript analysis of various printed editions and available digital manuscripts. The results of the study indicate that As-Sunan al-Kubrā functions as an encyclopedia of hadith law with a comprehensive thematic systematics, while As-Sunan as-Sughrā is a concise and selective version compiled for the practical needs of fiqh. Methodologically, al-Bayhaqi presents an integration between the approaches of hadith scholars and fiqh scholars (jam‘ bayna al-madrasatayn), making his work an important bridge between the traditions of riwayah and dirayah. Manuscript analysis also reveals several textual variants and editorial differences that have implications for legal understanding in Shafi‘i fiqh literature. Thus, this study emphasizes the importance of philological studies of al-Bayhaqi’s work to strengthen understanding of the evolution of hadith epistemology and classical Islamic law.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the trilogy of mu'jam by Imam Abū al-Qāsim Sulaimān bin Aḥmad ath-Thabarānī (260–360 H): Al-Mu'jam al-Kabīr, Al-Mu'jam al-Awsath, and Al-Mu'jam ash-Shaghīr. This study uses a library method and a hadith science approach through a comparison of primary sources of study, namely the three ath-Thabarānī trilogies as canonical sources of hadith that complement the treasury of hadith science, then supported by various books related to hadith science as secondary sources of research. The focus of the study includes the methodology of compilation, the character of the curation of the narration, and the comparative value of the three for hadith studies—especially access to sanad verification and mapping of transmission paths which aim to understand the contents of each Mu’jam and analyze its function and contribution to sanad verification and path studies. Methodologically, al-Kabīr is arranged according to the musnad of the companions alphabetically (starting with Khulafā' Rāshidīn, then 'asyarah al-mubashsharūn), thus facilitating the consolidation of all narrations per companion. Al-Awsath is organized by the names of the teachers (shuyūkh) of Thabarānī and functions as a "bank of unique/gharīb" traditions, often accompanied by 'ilal commentary on the uniqueness of the lines. ash-Shaghīr is also based on shuyūkh; its primary purpose is to catalog teachers—generally one hadith per teacher—with a brief biographical introduction. The comparison reveals three layers of function: (1) al-Kabīr as a comprehensive "data lake"; (2) al-Awsath as a complement of perspectives through gharā'ib; (3) ash-Shaghīr as a practical index of transmission networks. The contemporary relevance of this study, as concluded, is evident in the ease of replicating the mu'jam model for digital databases—searching by companion/teacher, auditing lines, and tiered curation for teaching and research. Thus, this trilogy provides a rich framework for sanad criticism and ethical development through the expansion of the corpus of pedagogically and academically valuable traditions.

Abstract

The relationship between ulama and umara is a classic issue in Islamic civilization that has major implications for the moral and social stability of the community. Throughout history, the closeness or distance between these two entities often determines the religious direction and legitimacy of power. Imam Jalāluddīn as-Suyūṭī (d. 911 H) through his work Ar-Risālah as-Sulṭāniyyah emphasized the importance of maintaining ethical boundaries in the relationship between ulama and rulers, especially amidst political situations full of interests. This study aims to uncover the concept of the boundaries of the relationship between ulama and umara according to as-Suyūṭī and its relevance to the context of modern Islamic power. The method used is a library research study with a content analysis approach to the text of Ar-Risālah as-Sulṭāniyyah, complemented by a historical study of the context of Sultan Qāytbāy's reign during the Mamluk period. The results of the study show that as-Suyūṭī emphasized four main principles: maintaining the independence of ulama from political pressure, advising rulers with wisdom and courage, refusing gifts that could potentially tarnish integrity, and placing knowledge as a moral control over power. The conclusion of this study confirms that the ethical concept of the ulama-umara relationship according to as-Suyūṭī is still relevant in maintaining the balance between religious and political authority, and serves as an important guideline for the formation of the character of ulama with integrity in the contemporary era.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the contextualization of hadith in relation to culture and locality by highlighting the contributions of classical and modern scholars, including the Indonesian hadith figure, M. Syuhudi Ismail. Through a qualitative approach with library research methods, this study examines classical literature such as the works of Imam Malik, al-Syafi‘ī, al-Ghazālī, al-Syāṭibī, and Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, as well as contemporary literature from Fazlur Rahman, Amin Abdullah, and M. Syuhudi Ismail. The analysis is conducted descriptively and analytically to trace the relationship between the hadith text, the socio-cultural context, and the maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah. The results show that the contextualization of hadith is a scientific effort to maintain the relevance of the prophetic message amidst the dynamics of diverse societies and cultures. In M. Syuhudi Ismail's view, the understanding of hadith cannot be separated from the elements of space, time, and culture. He proposed a distinction between universal, temporal, and local values in hadith and emphasized the importance of a balance between the authenticity of the sanad and the validity of understanding (ṣaḥīḥ al-fahm). His idea asserted that hadith must be understood through an integration of textual, historical, and cultural approaches so that its teachings remain a living tradition in society. This research asserts that the contextualization of hadith is a continuity between the turāth tradition and modern methodological renewal, where culture and locality become media to actualize the universal values of the sunnah in the reality of humanity.

Abstract

Thi s study aims to examine comprehensively Kitāb al-Mustadrak ʿalā al-Ṣaḥīḥayn by al-Ḥākim al-Naysābūrī (d. 405 H), one of the most significant works in the hadith corpus, composed with the purpose of completing authentic traditions that were not included in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. The research seeks to explore the background of the book’s compilation, the author’s scholarly profile, al-Ḥākim’s methodology in collecting and evaluating hadiths, as well as the responses of later scholars concerning the authenticity and quality of the narrations contained within. This study employs a qualitative method using a descriptive-analytical approach through a library-based examination of primary and secondary sources, including al-Mustadrak, Talkhīṣ al-Mustadrak by al-Dhahabī, and critical commentaries from both classical and contemporary hadith scholars. The findings indicate that although al-Ḥākim claimed that all hadiths in al-Mustadrak meet the authenticity criteria applied by al-Bukhārī and Muslim, many narrations within the collection have been criticized for their weak chains of transmission and problematic textual content. Nevertheless, the book holds substantial value in hadith studies, particularly as a comparative reference and a critical resource within the classical and modern scholarly traditions. Thus, al-Mustadrak remains an essential work for understanding the dynamics of hadith authenticity, transmission, and criticism throughout Islamic intellectual history.
