Abstract

This study uses a qualitative research approach to examine the illocutionary acts in Barack Obama's 2008 victory speech. The study's data, which focuses on the connection between theory and research, comprises spoken and written words. The researchers employ an observational strategy and note-taking technique to collect data from the speech. The data analysis uses an identification procedure that involves watching and listening to the video and audio to pinpoint the different illocutionary acts that Obama has used. Based on Searle's theory, the researchers categorize the transcriptions and find 21 illocutionary acts, such as directive, commissive, declarative, expressive, and representative. These results demonstrate that Obama's speech contained two directive acts, two commissive acts, five representative acts, six expressive acts, and six declarative acts. This study adds to our knowledge of how theories are revived through qualitative research and offers insightful information on the dynamics of illocutionary acts in speech. The findings provide additional insight into Obama's communication tactics and his rhetorical devices in his victory address. Subsequent investigations in this field may examine the influence and efficacy of illocutionary actions in political dialogue.

Abstract

This research examines the career of Japanese-American actor Mackenyu Arata, particularly his roles in live-action adaptations of manga and anime, to understand his influence on cross-cultural narrative integration in cinema. The study focuses on Mackenyu's portrayal of leading and important supporting characters in several high-profile adaptations, including Netflix's One Piece, where he plays Zoro, and others such as Chihayafuru, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Rurouni Kenshin, and Fullmetal Alchemist. Employing qualitative analysis, this paper investigates how Mackenyu strategically navigates away from the shadow of his father, legendary actor Sonny Chiba, to forge an independent identity and career. Data was collected through reviews, audience reception studies, and box office performance, and analyzed to assess thematic consistency and cultural impact across different markets. Experts in film adaptation theory, such as Linda Hutcheon, and resources like The Routledge Companion to World Cinema provided theoretical frameworks for analyzing how narratives are adapted for global audiences and the role of actors in these adaptations. The findings reveal that Mackenyu's choices are not merely artistic but are also deliberate efforts to blend Eastern and Western cinematic traditions, enhancing his appeal as a global actor. His roles often reflect a profound engagement with his bicultural heritage, challenging the notion that he is only a "second-generation star." These roles resonate with global audiences and contribute to the ongoing discourse on cultural integration in film. The study concludes that Mackenyu is a key figure in the realm of live-action adaptations, with a unique ability to transcend cultural and cinematic boundaries.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the translation strategies and the equivalence of idiomatic expressions in the "An Abundance of Katherines". The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The data source of the study was gathered from the novel "An Abundance of Katherines" and its translation. The data were collected randomly from the source text (ST) and target text (TT). The collected data were analyzed qualitatively based on idiomatic translation strategies, for instance paraphrasing the idiomatic expressions that maintain similar meanings through dissimilar styles or forms as the most frequently strategy employed by the translator. The results of this study indicate that the idiom translation strategy applied by the translator uses the idiom translation strategy with paraphrasing. This seems to be based on the idea that the translator tends to preserve the equivalence in meaning between the source and target languages, for example idioms are translated into non-idioms, idioms with idioms, etc. This research concludes that the translator seems to apply her own strategies by paraphrasing the source text idioms more often into non-idioms in the target text in order to obtain equivalence in meaning and culture. In general, the strategies of translation carried out by the translator can be categorized as acceptance translation and equivalence in terms of meaning and culture. Therefore, this study suggests for translators who wish to translate idioms from English into Indonesian should not be restricted on one theory of translation, but must be more flexible by considering the contextual and cultural factors.
