Abstract

Syntax is a part of linguistics that studies how words are combined into sentences and phrases. In this study, we focus on analyzing the syntax of noun phrases in Indonesian. We use the treebank analysis technique to identify the syntactic structure of noun phrases in Indonesian. Study results show that noun phrases in Indonesian have complex and varied syntactic structures and that the context and types of noun phrases play an important role in influencing the syntactic structure of noun phrases. These findings are important for understanding how noun phrases are formed and understood in Indonesian and how it affects language processing.

Abstract

This study was purposed to reveal doubleness of cultural identity experienced by diaspora individuals in a short story written by Randa Jarrar, entitled Him, Me, Muhammad Ali. This story captured a life of diaspora who was not easy for a completely different culture between the homeland and the hostland. Jarrar depicted how being a Muslim living in a western country could be totally a mess for her cultural identity. To conduct this study, the method used was qualitative descriptive by collecting the data through reading the novels. Then, the certain quotations that relates to diaspora were analyzed by cultural identity and diaspora concept from Stuart Hall. This diaspora term refers to the character who owns two or more different culture in his life. The result of the analysis framed that being a diaspora living in a country with a completely different culture is complicated, especially to define the diaspora individual’s cultural of identity. The diaspora character was in the state of doubleness, which they could not completely belong to one culture. The character has culture in between his homeland (Muslim culture) and hostland (American culture). However, Jarrar depicts that there was a tendency for a culture to be more dominant than the other one.

Abstract

The grieving process, as described in the book "How to Make Friends with the Dark" by Kathleen Glasgow, has been investigated in this study. Following the loss of a loved one, those who grieve go through a natural process of mourning that can be summarized in the phrase "journey of grief." The researcher chose the sixth stage of grief theory from Kübler Ross and David Kessler to analyse the data in this study. This study examines the psychological state of the main character by using the theories of Kübler Ross and David Kessler through the novel "How to Make Friends with the Dark." The results are exploited by offering a detailed list of Tiger's developing relationship with darkness itself. The researcher examines and analyses the book to compile a list of Tiger's speeches as described therein. The six stages of grieving can be seen to correlate with each item on the list. As a result, the main characters in this book go through the stages of grieving in their own unique and distinctive way, which helps them reach the end of their journey—finding meaning. It shows that the main character in the novel experiences all six stages of grief, namely denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance, and finding meaning. Initially, Tiger did not accept her mother's death. However, at the end of the story, she decides to move on and learn to make friends with her darkness.

Abstract The purpose of creating this research is to reveal race, milieu, and moment in the novel “Gone with the Wind” written by Margaret Mitchell. In this research, researchers focused on applying historical approach by Hippolyte Adolphe Taine in Guerin et al. (2005) that consists race, milieu and moment to analyze “Gone with the Wind” novel as the data source. Besides applying the theory, descriptive qualitative research by Sugiyono (2012) was also applied by researchers due to the phenomena that were found in written form. To collect the data, researchers applied library research method by George (2008) by following four steps, they are: took “Gone with the Wind” novel as the data source, read the novel carefully, find the race, milieu, and moment, and collect and divide the data found. In analyzing the data, researchers focused on analyzing the extrinsic element explained by Wellek & Warren (1949) by applying race, milieu, and moment theory and presented them descriptively. For the findings, researcher found the race or racial differences on the skin color and their nationality in United States of America on North Georgia, in the Old South region. The milieu was discovered in the character’s occupation where they worked as businessman, plantation owner, breeding farm owner, student, farmer, soldier, maid, horse coachman, doctor, and prostitute.
