Abstract

The experiences of English language education students significantly shape language learning practices and pedagogical approaches globally. Despite the growing interest in these experiences, research on the intersection of identity and language teacher development remains limited, particularly among Indonesian English education students. This study employed James Paul Gee's Identity Theory (2000) to explore the construction and reconstruction of my identity as an English education student during a study exchange at Osaka University (2023–2024). Using a narrative self-study approach, I carefully examine up to the present moment, the struggles, development, and successes that have reshaped my formerly shaped identity as an English language learner and English education student. Moreover, a collection of reflective writings such as documents, pamphlet notes, tables, and journals were adopted to critically review my identity through a constant comparative method of data analysis, which led to the revelation of multiple stages of my identity formation and then its further reconstruction. The findings reveal that students and teachers’ narrations provide insightful and enlightening clues for each and every engaged member of the learning cycle to learn how to deal with members within their communities, and remind policy-makers and higher-order authorities of the value in recognizing and appreciating each and every one of an individual’s voices.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze altruistic behavior represented in three selected picture books. All three picture books have a common thread in building children's awareness of helping others and entering into the discussion of altruistic behavior. The objects of this study are three picture books entitled Little Miss Mary and the Big Monster Makeover by G.G. Toropov and Cleone Cassidy (2008), Harold Loves His Woolly Hat by Vern Kousky (2018), and My Brother's Wheelchair by Salil Chaturvedi (2019). The researchers conducted qualitative research by examining the image of pictures and the texts available in the picture books. The data were collected through close reading and content analysis, focusing on both textual and visual narratives. According to Ary et al. (2010), close reading in literature involves examining the formal elements. In doing so, the researchers use the theory of Ricard (2015) as the basis of the results of the analysis, which then finds this altruistic behavior related to the discussion. By observing the plot in the story and exploring the implicit message of the author in fostering social awareness in children as readers, these three picture books instill understanding to help others without asking for reciprocity and are only based on a simple desire oneself to help others selflessly.

Abstract

This study examines Michel Foucault's theories on power and madness through the film Shutter Island, focusing on how institutional control shapes perceptions of sanity and insanity. Using Madness and Civilization as a theoretical framework, the research explores how psychiatric institutions define and regulate madness, creating "docile bodies" through surveillance and discipline. The data source consists of selected scenes from Shutter Island that illustrate institutional control mechanisms. The study employs qualitative methods, including scene analysis and dialogue transcription, to uncover the film's depiction of power dynamics. The findings reveal that the institution on Shutter Island functions as both a physical and psychological prison, using isolation, sedation, and psychological manipulation to maintain authority over patients. The narrative critiques the normalization and pathologization of madness, demonstrating how compliance with institutional norms is rewarded while deviation is punished. Authority figures, particularly doctors, play a central role in shaping patients' realities, exposing the oppressive nature of psychiatric institutions disguised as therapeutic environments. This study offers a contemporary application of Foucault’s theories, highlighting the ethical implications of power in mental health care.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the illocutionary and perlocutionary acts in the movie The Whale, focusing on the communication between the father, Charlie, and his daughter, Ellie. This research used John Searle's (1979) speech act theory as its theoretical framework. The data source is The Whale movie script, it uses descriptive qualitative research method and note-taking. The findings show 67 utterances of illocutionary acts, with assertive being the most frequent (23 occurrences) and commissive the least (8 occurrences). The most frequent perlocutionary effect was emotive (38 occurrences), while the least frequent was cognitive (8 occurrences). The analysis highlights that Charlie expresses his thoughts honestly, conveying beliefs, hopes, and explanations about his past life. In contrast, Ellie's responses to Charlie's words evoke emotional perlocutionary effects, including anger, frustration, confusion, and cynicism. Their interaction is laden with emotional tension, which illustrates how speech acts shape their complex relationship. This research emphasizes that dialogue serves not only as a means of communication, but also as a powerful tool to reveal deeper meanings, enrich characterization, and provide a stronger emotional experience for the audience.

Abstract

This research described the feminist stylistic and gender specifications in Enola Holmes 2 movie. The method used in this research is a qualitative method and the theory applied is feminist stylistics theory by Sarah Mills. The researchers analysed the collected data based on the level of words, phrases or sentences, and discourses. The objectives of this research are some words, sentences and discourses in the Enola Holmes 2 Movie’s Script that refers to the feminist stylistics, such as the diction, language used, figurative language and how the style affects the feminist value in Enola Holmes 2 movie. The result found in this research is the different styles in presenting female and male by the script writer. Females are represented with feminine words and mostly represented by their physical appearances, feminine stereotypes, and beauty behaviours. Meanwhile, males are represented with masculine words and mostly represented by their strong characteristics. Also, masculine stereotypes and many occupation titles or jobs refer to men rather than women. It proved that the script writer shows men involved more in the professional world than women, especially in investigating professions like detective.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of student etiquette in a program that teaches the rules of manners in the context of communal dining. Table etiquette is an essential part of social and professional life, and these skills are expected to enhance students' self-image and interpersonal abilities. The research method involved distributing questionnaires and conducting interviews with 7th-semester students who participated in the program. The findings indicate that the majority of 7th-semester students were able to apply etiquette well, although some challenges were observed in understanding and practicing more complex rules. Factors affecting the success of etiquette implementation include the level of understanding, cultural background, and the influence of instructors. This study recommends the need for a more structured approach and a variety of teaching methods to improve the effectiveness of the Table Manner program for 7th-semester students.

Abstract

This study examines the rhetorical strategies embedded in Henry VIII’s letters to Anne Boleyn as portrayed in the television series The Tudors. Drawing on Ballif’s seduction theory, which posits that persuasion intertwines rationality and emotional manipulation, the analysis identifies three key linguistic elements: affective, pompous, and ridiculous language. Using qualitative textual analysis paired with Spradley’s ethnographic coding techniques, the study investigates how Henry’s discourse oscillates between expressions of romantic devotion, performative grandiosity, and strategic dominance. The findings reveal that Henry’s letters employ emotional appeals, hyperbolic flattery, and rhetorical flourishes to simultaneously assert authority and court Anne’s favor. In contrast, Anne’s responses reflect caution and tactical modesty, underscoring her navigation of gendered power dynamics. The results demonstrate that seductive language in these exchanges blurs the boundaries between sincerity and manipulation, aligning with Ballif’s argument that rhetoric operates beyond binary distinctions of truth or falsehood. This study highlights the dual function of seduction as both an intimate gesture and a political instrument, offering fresh insights into the interplay of love, power, and persuasion in historical dramatizations.

Abstract

In the digital era, fake news has become a powerful tool to influence public opinion, spread fear, and manipulate people's behavior. Language plays a significant role in this phenomenon, not only as a means of communication, but also as a tool of persuasion and misdirection. This article examines the linguistic strategies commonly used in the creation and spread of viral hoaxes, using a discourse analysis approach and framing theory. The focus lies on the use of emotional language, manipulative diction, hyperbole, metaphors, as well as narratives designed to establish false credibility and trigger strong emotional reactions. The article also discusses the constructive collaboration between language and visual elements such as images, memes and symbols that reinforce misleading narratives on social media. Data sources consist of 3-5 hoax news stories that have been clarified by fact-checking sites such as TurnBackHoax.id. Data collection was done through documentation techniques by downloading the hoax text and supporting information. Data analysis was conducted qualitatively through content analysis and comparison between the hoax text and its clarification. The findings of this article emphasize the importance of critical awareness of language and media literacy in dealing with disinformation, as well as the need for an interdisciplinary approach involving linguistics, communication, and digital media studies.

Abstract

This study investigates the application of Grice’s Cooperative Principle in spoken discourse by analyzing Rosé’s utterances during her interview on the i-D YouTube channel. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research identifies how the four conversational maxims—quantity, quality, relation, and manner—are manifested in her responses. The data are obtained through non-participatory observation and note-taking and analyzed using a pragmatic identity method. A total of 22 utterances were identified, with the maxims of quantity and relation (36.36%) being the most frequently observed. The findings show that Rosé’s responses largely adhered to the principles of quantity and relevance, reflecting a cooperative communication style. These findings highlight a growing trend in pragmatic research: the context-dependent application of Grice’s maxims in public discourse. Despite these developments, there remains a notable gap in research focusing specifically on K-pop artist interviews within digital platforms such as YouTube. Considering this, the present study contributes to a broader understanding of cooperative communication in media discourse and offers insights into the continued applicability of Gricean theory in analyzing contemporary public interactions.
