Abstract

This study investigated the use of socio-affective strategies to enhance the students’ motivation in speaking. Therefore, the purposes of the study were to find out the teacher’s way of using socio-affective strategies to enhance students’ motivation in speaking and to describe students’ perception toward socio-affective strategies in enhancing their motivation in speaking. A case study was used as a research design of this study. The data were collected through classroom behaviour observation, interview, and questionnaire. Furthermore, the writer used data triangulation technique to make the research result more valid. The finding of this study showed that there are six ways in using socio-affective strategies in teaching speaking; reducing students’ anxiety, encouraging students in speaking, controlling students’ emotion, asking question, cooperating with others, and empathising with others. The data also indicated that students have positive perception on using socio-affective strategies to enhance their motivation in speaking.

Abstract

This research examined the formulation of legendary heroic stories and popular in Japan about the story of Rurouni Kenshin or often referred to as Samurai X and Miyamoto Mushashi atu called Samurai I. The two stories are then adapted into the screen and get a positive response and even enter in star 7 in the Box Office and imdb. It’s clear that the two of the stories surged as apopular works and deserve to be analyzed by using the popular literature approach. To examine the hypothesis, researchers used the Cawelty theory with the terminology of formula/formulae. By using the Cawelty concept, this research examined the formulas used in both Japanese legend stories Rurouni Kenshin and Miyamoto Mushashi regarding similarities and differences as well as the factors that caused them to become popular according to the values and tastes of the audience. The results of the study indicated that the two action legends generally have the same action story formula as the cawelty formula, story/narrative structure, and similar motives for action. The difference from the two stories lines mainly in the way of author presents mythology and metaphor. Formula is one of the main factors that make a story like and get a positive response in the market, including consistency, originality, and the ability to attract miracles, place and style in the presentation of stories.

Abstract

This research is aimed to find a comparison of how each language (colloquail, slang, transformational) are formed, in what context is used, and what is the perspective of the use of these three languages. This research is descriptive qualitative research. At the stage of providing data, researchers use Simak and Cakap technique. In the process of data analysis, the researchers use the method of padan and agih method. The agih method is used to look at the slang language constructs in each period while the method of padan is used to describe the adolescent Perspective in the use of colloquail, slang and transformational language from time to time. The result of the research shows that the way how the three non standard language is different from each other. Colloquail language are formed by changing “a” to “e” in final syllable, Deletion of First Syllable, New word formation, Additional Syllable “nge”, Change “a” to “e” in final syllable and add “an”, and Additional particle “deh”, “aja”, “kok”, “ama”. Slang language are formed by Initial Each Word Collection, Word letter choosen, Deletion of initial letter and syllable, Change of “s’ to “c”, Change of “k” to “q”, Change of “au” to “w”, Change of “u” to “oe”, Adoption of basic words, English language abbreviation, English-Indonesia Abreviation, Citation and new word construction.Transformational language are formed by Ga, Gi, Gu, Ge, Go formula after single vowel sound syllable, Ga/G, Gi, Gu, Ge, Go formula before dipthong sound syllable, Ga, Gi, Gu, Ge, Go formula before last consonant sound, and Ga, Gi, Gu, Ge, Go formula for cluster consonant. The colloquial language usage context is more influenced by the habitual aspects heard by speakers in their environment such as at home, in markets, playgrounds, and certain other events. Slang languages, its use is influenced by the juvenile community environment where users only on the uses level 12 to 19 years. Transformational language was influenced by the desire to hide speech to people who were not from their groups like parents and strangers.

Abstract

Didalam proses pengajaran bahasa Inggris di sekolah baik di tingkat SMA maupun tingkat SMP penggunaan bilingual tidak dapat dihindari. Penggunaan bilingual yang sering digunakan dalam proses “mencerdaskan kehidupan bangsa” adalah “Code Mixing” dan “Code Switching.” Kedua alih kode tersebut berperan sangat penting dalam membantu pemahaman kepada siswa. Sejauh mana pengaruh dari kedua kode tersebut didalam pemabahan? Penelitian ini akan mengungkapkannya secara detail dan data yang didapatkan dianalisa dengan menggunakan uji Kruskal Wallis One Way Anova dengan menggunakan nilai chisquare untuk mengetahui signifikansinya.

Abstract

This research was an attempt to prove the effectiveness of using full-English as a language of instruction in improving children’s English-speaking skill. Treatments were given in 6 meetings for each of the control and experimental class. Two types of lesson plans were arranged, one used full-English as the language of instruction for the experiment class and the other used mixed language (a combination of English and mother tongue) for the control class. An experiment with a quasi-experimental design and an oral test were used as the method and instrument. Based on the calculation of Chi-square and Fisher tests, it was found that the data of both classes were homogeneous and normally distributed. After fulfilling the requirements, the hypothesis was tested by using the T-test at 0.05 significance level. The findings discovered that t-computation was higher than t-table (+3.25 > +1.67). It indicated that the mean of the experiment class was significantly higher than the control class. The findings above led to a conclusion that the use of full-English as language of instruction was effective in improving children’s English-speaking skill. However, since the children were still beginners of English as a foreign language, then it was advisable to ensure that the English used by teachers be inside the children’s zone of proximal development. It was also recommended for teachers to use broken instead of standard English and to accompany their language input with gestures in order deliver meaning easier.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out whether or not there was a significant correlation between noun phrase and writing descriptive text. This study was using quantitative approach. The technique for collecting data was noun phrase test and written test. This study was conducted at SMA N 5 OKU. The population of this study was the tenth grade students of SMA N 5 OKU in academic year 2018/2019 and the samples were 122 students which were choosen randomly from the population. The data were collected by using noun phrase test and written test. The data were analyzed by using the correlational analyses and computerized by using SPSS 23. After conducting the research, the researcher got the data which showed that there was significant correlation between noun phrase and writing descriptive text. The correlation was significant in terms of the correlation coefficient was 0.424. It meant that research hypothesis (Ha) alternative hypothesis was accepted and (Ho) null hypothesis was rejected.

Abstract

This research entitled "The Effect of Using Role Playing Strategies on the ability to speak English at Muhammadiyah Middle School 01 Medan. This research was appointed to increase the courage of students to speak English using the "Role Playing" strategy. Then look for self-confidence efforts for students who speak English through the "Role Playing" strategy. Finally, to create the benefits of "Role Playing" in supporting English learning at Muhammadiyah Middle School 01 Medan. This research used descriptive quantitative and qualitative research methods. Quantitative methods to calculate the average value of student test results, while qualitative is used to calculate the observation results of student learning activities in each cycle. Everything was explained according to the facts found in the field during the research. The method used in data collection was the experimental method. The experimental method was a method of directly testing the effect of variables on other variables and testing the hypothesis of a causal relationship. The technique used in this method, namely by comparing classes that get special treatment and classes that do not get treatment.

Abstract

Puisi adalah salah satu karya sastra. Dalam konteks EFL, puisi diyakini dapat meningkatkan kreativitas siswa, berfikir kritis dan keterampilan bahasa, terutama membaca dan menulis. Kelas menulis kreatif disediakan sebagai tempat siswa belajar tentang puisi. Salah satu kegiatannya adalah proyek menulis puisi. Berdasarkan hasil, ada prestasi yang baik yang diperoleh siswa. Mereka menulis puisi secara kreatif dalam berbagai tema. Selain itu, umpan balik positif juga diberikan oleh siswa tentang bagaimana mereka akhirnya suka membaca. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki kreativitas siswa dalam menulis puisi dan tantangan yang dihadapi selama proses penulisan. Metode yang dilakukan dalam penelitian ini berupa studi kasus. Lima dari tiga puluh siswa yang memperoleh nilai terbaik menjadi partisipan. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan dokumentasi dan juga interview yang dilakukan dua kali. Adapun teknik analisi yang digunakan adalah dokumentasi dan analysis tematik. hasil dari penelitian ini terungkap bahwa kreatifitas siswa sangat bervariasi dilihat dari dua aspek,; yakni pemilihan isi, struktur , language play, serta konektifitas antara gambar dan puisi yang dihasilkan. Selain itu, ada 2 tantangan yang dihadapi siwa dalam proses penulisan puisi; yaitu hambatan kosakata dan juga ide dan konsep yang terbatas.

Abstract

This article describes the semantics of language acquisition Minangkabau children aged three years and six months. The aim of the research is to describe the process of acquirement of Minang Language by three and six months (3.5) years old children semantically. The type of the reseacrh is qualitative research by using descriptive method. The research concludes some of the following. (1) child in the preoperational already widely used class of words in conversation or language; (2) children who are at the stage of semantic field use more nouns in ujarannya words of another word class; (3) children aged three years not only say a few classes of verbs, adjectives, nouns, pronouns, numeralia, and said duty in preposition in language ujarannya, but children also understand what he is saying; (4) in the pronunciation of the letter (s) the children can not pronounce correctly. Based on the research it is found excessive generalizing the class of a particular word. The word that tends to generalize excessively by the respondent is a word that is far from the environment and the word which has similar features. In addition, the three classes of words (verbs word class, said class of nouns and adjectives word classes) of respondents also gained other words namely numeralia class and soon. Based on data analysis and discussion that has been done in this study, respondents may otherwise be known at the time of sweeping generalization. Specifically, this research deals with the verbal speech acts of the children which is based on the data analysis and discussion that show the acquirement of Minang Language of denotative meaning lexically can be divided into 1) nominal, 2) Verbal, and 3) adjective.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to define the lexical cohesion in the dialogue. The focus of this paper is the repetition that happens frequently in the dialogue. The dialogue is taken from the talk shows downloaded from youtube. The analysis is given based on the data from the dialogue of the speakers and draw the conclusion. This study brings benefits in building the perception of the audiences. From the data that has been analyzed, it has been found that the speakers tend to repeat the word, phrase, or sentence because they want to strengthen their opinion, eventhough from the sentence structure the repetition is not good and eficient. The result of the study also show that there are some reasons why do the speakers repeat their word. phrase or sentence such as to strengthen their opinion.
